Ticket upgrade-help?

I have friends that have a one day base ticket that will need to upgrade these to 3 day tickets. They haven't decided if they are doing park hoppers or not. What exactly to they need to do to upgrade. I have heard people talk about entering the park with the one day ticket and upgrading once they are in the park. Will they not lose that value of the one day ticket or can they still apply that $75 or whatever to the 3 day ticket? Basically, do they upgrade in the park or outside the turnstiles or does it even matter? Thanks for the help!

Using the ticket first will lock in the current gate price for upgrades.

Tickets can be upgraded anytime within 14 days after first use, even fully used tickets.

If they bought the one day ticket at a discount, or before prices went up, they should use it first and then upgrade. That way, they will get the full $75 credit regardless of what they paid for it. It doesn't matter that the ticket was all "used up;" it can be upgraded within 14 days of first use.

If they bought the ticket at the current price, as part of a package for instance, it doesn't matter when they upgrade it - before or after entering would be the same thing.

There isn't anyplace that offers the one-day tickets at a discount (in fact the brokers that do offer them actually charge a premium), so AFAIK the issue of "locking in" at gate price by using the ticket first frequently isn't an issue with one-day tickets. More commonly, I suppose, might be an older one-day ticket that was bought at the then-current gate price, but less than the current gate price.

Be aware that when it comes to knowing about bridging tickets to the current base price, it's hit-or-miss in terms of a CM knowing what they are supposed to do and/or how to do it. It's not uncommon to have to (politely) ask that they check with a supervisor regarding the policy or to have more success trying again with a different CM or at a different location.

When you submit a used Magic Your Way ticket to be upgraded, you receive a ticket of the kind you want with the same amount of usage already taken out, and you pay the difference in price as posted above the ticket booths.

So if you submit a used 1 day ticket and want a 3 day ticket, you pay the difference between a 1 day ticket and a 3 day ticket and you get a 3 day ticket one of whose days was used.

There is no sliding scale or pro-rating of ticket value depending on how much was used.

Upgrading is done at Guest Relations just inside or outside the turnstiles, or at a ticket booth.

(MYW tickets used more than 13 days ago may no longer be upgraded. Older types of tickets may not be upgraded after any usage but unused tickets may be traded in for roughly what you paid.)

The tickets are from a package. I am going with two friends in October. I have an AP and got a free dining pin code. So, we all bought one day base tickets to get the free dining package. I will save my one day ticket for later and use my AP, but they need tickets for this trip. They will have to upgrade their one day tickets from the package to 3 day tickets. So, is it best for them to upgrade inside the park or before they go through the turnstiles? Thanks for the help!

Just USE the tickets before upgrading.

They can then do the upgrade inside or outside the gates after that.

They could even do it the next morning before entering the park that next day, or do it at the resort Concierge desk the evening of the first day, after using the tickets.
