Three Things...Gratitude Thread

Good Morning

Sorry I’ve not been here lately - little Otis is very needy and I spend more time outside the house, then inside the house in the morning. My whole schedule is so thrown off. Hopefully things will start going back to normal soon.

Until then....have a good weekend friends!!!

Doing well in school - I was blessed to go to a very good public high school where it was not only accepted but cool to do all of the stereotypically nerdy things. Much of the credit goes to the teachers and admins supporting immersive and unconventional methods, along with greenlighting some special field trips.

STEM - DD18 is a biology major/pre-med and is really big on more women making that jump into STEM fields, but in general, feels that we need to ditch the antiquated mindset that math and science is for nerds.

A thirst for knowledge - OK, that sounds cheesy! Still, it's great to keep learning...even if it's not the most earth shattering and revolutionary things, it's something you didn't know before.

Nerdy things:
Another vote for continuing learning! - I will be starting some new Zoom classes soon.
Math & Science jokes - When I see them on line, I often forward them to my math teacher friend or to DH.
The Harry Potter fandom - I love that even though the books have been out for years, I can still find theory videos, trivia, etc. on YouTube.

Good Saturday Morning

It looks like I can participate this morning…..

#1 - Dry Cereal - I love my bowl of cereal, and I also enjoy certain cereals for snacking.

#2 - Nutrigrain Bars - I always have one before I work out.

#3 - Pancakes - My love for pancakes is huge! Whoever invented pancakes - thank you!

Today's Topic (Fri, 8/23) - 3 Nerdy Things You're Grateful For

#1 - Museums - I absolutely love museums and I’m one of those people that likes to read everything. My DH now works for The Museum of Science and Industry in Chicago, which is so awesome, because I can go for free whenever I want 🙂👍🏻

#2 - Historical Documentaries - I enjoy learning more about historical times through documentaries

#3 - Harry Potter - I’m joining @PollyannaMom with this. I call myself a Harry Potter nerd all the time. I enjoy learning about all the back stories of the characters and info about the books and movies. So fun!

Good morning friends:grouphug:

Slo, thank you for the 🥞smile. I enjoy 3 very small (smaller probably than silver dollar size) pancakes every morning. No butter just a little syrup. Tasty and comforting. Cereal is too chewy/crunchy for me now. When I was younger, I also enjoyed dry cereal snacks.

Dad sometimes joins me with a pancake breakfast. He puts blueberries in his. Plain for me. Dad mostly enjoys granola with yogurt. I'm thankful that he is able to and grateful to God that dad and I are able to share mealtime together daily.

Thomas Mini Bagels are something I can enjoy as any meal. Right now, they're too chewy for me so pancakes daily it is.

Most nights I have a plain scrambled egg as part of my dinner.

Eggs Benedict❤️
French toast ❤️
Pastries - cheese danish donuts croissants coffee cake cake pie anything in dessert category really except for custards I do not do custards or filled donuts
Fresh fruit
Coffee
Grapefruit juice ❤️❤️❤️
Bacon 🥓
Hash ❤️❤️
Bloody Mary it is a breakfast item!! Especially on a buffet because they put some food items in it!! It’s a meal itself🤣👍
My favorite is breakfast for dinner I prefer it that way who wants to get up and make breakfast not me jump out of bed and cook ? Not happening ever unless I’m camping and I don’t camp anymore🤣🤣

I like my brunch around 11:30 AM I mainly stick to the breakfast foods but if they have steak I’m all in !!!

So, I’m going to do desserts and breakfast stuff, because I love both…

Breakfast

Eggs Sardou- My dad loves to cook and this was one of his favorite more elaborate breakfast meals to make when we were growing up. It’s how I learned to make hollandaise.

Donuts- This is one of our favorite things to get on early softball days. While we’re not always local, if we are, any early morning trip to Shipley really hits the spot.

Kolaches- I didn’t learn about these until I moved to Texas and I’m really more fond of the savory, but they are one of the most perfect portable and filling breakfast items.

Desserts

Cake- My mom always made our birthday cakes. As kids, she was the queen of the star tip for piping. She elevated her skills when I was about 10, working with a friend’s mom who was a pro cake decorator for a hotel. She did it so she could make my aunt’s wedding cake and save them money. When we were older, she subscribed to Bon Apetit and started making us gourmet cakes. After being quoted over $7k on my dream wedding cake, I started teaching myself. I’m no pro, but I learned enough to indulge my kids with cakes that were the envy of all of their friends.

The cookie in Salzburg- it’s been nearly 24 years, but this was the single best cookie I’ve ever had in my life. It was an over the top version of the Austrian Ischler, which is sort of a sandwich cookie. It takes two almond shortbread cookies, filled with apricot preserves, coated in dark chocolate and topped with sliced almonds (toasted on the one I had). I’ve never tried to make it at home because the memory is just so good…well that, and I normally don’t do anything with nuts due to DD18s allergies.

Grandma’s pies- my paternal grandmother made the most amazing pies. A lot of it was her pie crust. I have yet to try anyone else’s homemade pies that had crust like this and the only other people in my family that could replicate it have also passed. Pumpkin, berry, raisin, and mincemeat were often the norm. Much of the filling was even grown in their garden.

Have enjoyed reading everyone's posts these last several days. Crazy week, subbing then getting Covid (2nd time). Ah school!

How to limit today's topic to only 3.

Mimosas lol.

Waffles - used to make them most weekends when DS was younger, later he bought me my own Mickey waffle maker. With whipped cream and strawberries especially! Miss those days. My poor waffle maker has sat idle for a number of years now.

Apple or berry pies (made by me - juicy with not too much sugar, just enough, and a sweet, crispy crust with milk bushed on top then sprinkled with sugar, like my grandmother taught me, only she used cream; back in those days, we did not have homogenized milk, we had cream top, and we had a little device you could put in the top of the bottle and skim the cream off to use). Added bonus - making cinnamon sugar "tarts" with the dough scraps. Again, it's been quite a while since I made a pie.

As for what I consume currently;

Again, mimosas!

Sausage Ring. My first day as a teacher, we had a meeting and another teacher brought a sausage ring. I got her recipe and have been making it ever since (I was only at that school 1 year - they overstaffed - so I was just sharing her recipe with others, not stealing it lol), and it is my most requested dish, both at work and with friends and family. Sooo easy if you have a Cuisinart. Thank you, Susan, if you happen to be a DISer! Wouldn't that be a hoot?!

Papa's Santa Cruz - my "go to" at the best breakfast place in my home town - potatoes topped with chicken, cheeses, guacamole, and tomatoes - the bonus is it is served with carrot walnut bread! Any place else, eggs benedict - if I know they make them right, runny yolk. If it's some place I don't know, french toast. All good!

Mmmmm . . . Breakfast

Biscuits and gravy (homemade please)

Breakfast potatoes as a side to anything - shredded, cubed, or sliced

A bacon and cheese omelet

I love having breakfast for dinner! I don’t do sweet foods for breakfast but I might make pancakes or French toast for dinner instead.

Nerdy things...
Math. I love understanding basic math, doing the problems, figuring out the answers. I think it's because for so many years, I was math-challenged. I realized when I was in my mid-20s it's because I never really learned math or the rules that make the magic happen!

Space. We are a big space science family. We love going to NASA, watching shuttle launches, movies/documentaries/programs about anything having to do with space.

Documentaries. We watch a LOT of documentaries, be they about history, animals, science, etc. You can throw listening to or watching Public TV/Radio shows. One of my favorite times to drive down to my sister's is in the early morning, so I can listen to MPBN on the radio (Maine Public Broadcasting).

Breakfast things...
Corned beef hash with eggs.
Any kind of eggs with hollandaise sauce.
Popovers

Apparently, I started this yesterday but my attention was requested by my DGD :)
3 Nerdy Things
I am always looking things up, mostly on my phone now, but I love reference books! Encyclopedias, atlases (I actually just looked up the correct plural for atlas as I typed this!), Bartlett’s Book of Quotations, etc. I love them all!

Although I’ve gotten a little relaxed about it online, I love grammar!

I love museums and all the educational aspects of the WS in Epcot. (Especially the Stave Gallery)

Breakfast Foods
I love navel oranges and when I get a good one, juicy and so sweet, it is heaven.
Summer fruit added to my yogurt mix, especially chopped watermelon
One of the few carbs I allow myself-1/4 c of Cascadian Farms Honey Nut O’s!
