Three Things...Gratitude Thread

Hope you had a mild case and that you are feeling better now!
Yes, thank you. It was like a very bad but short cold with a little lingering tiredness.

I almost forgot - for breakfast - a new favorite drink, the Grand Candied Orange Coffee at The Storytellers. Yum. Luckily, coffee doesn't keep me awake, so I can have it for dessert, too (I bought all the ingredients to make it at home it was sooooo good). And how could I forget my old favorite "special" breakfast - bagels with cream cheese, smoked salmon, onions, and capers. I know, I could make this myself any time, but it feels so much more elegant on a white tablecloth.

When I was young, the only pretty dresses I got were hand-me-downs from my then glamorous older cousin. But I got hand-me-down hand-me-downs - my older sister got them first! But thank you dear cousin (now in her 90's and sadly with Alzheimer's), I especially loved one pretty pink and white candy-striped Lanz dress. Wow, memories.

I love my grandmother's engagement ring - we took the diamond out and put it into a setting I picked out and put a pretty blue stone in her beautiful platinum setting.

My mother's china and cabinet. So many happy times. The only reason I got it was because after she died my father wanted to get rid of her china cabinet and I said I would love to have it - I remember how much she loved it - and it was easier for him to send it with everything that was inside.

I'm going to add one more. I don't buy too many things second hand except books that are out of print (and textbooks). There was one book, The Other Side of Green Hills, that I had read on vacation as a child that always haunted me (I had gotten it from the library - it was so exciting, we would go away for a month and my mother had a deal with the librarian that we could check out 4 books each and keep them out for a full month, which was unheard of back then! - there was no tv, we read every night in a cozy attic room in the Carmel woods) and I had looked for it off and on for years and finally found it - and bought myself a copy and also one for my sister. I love that if you keep at it, you can find almost anything on the internet sooner or later.

Glass dishes - you know the kind you display and sugar & creamer glass - really nice ones - Fenton glass - depression era glass dishes - they weren’t actually handed down they were kind of repurposed to my house they belong to my mother (deceased ) and my father was giving everything to his second wife who was just selling it so I repurpose those through an Aunt ( my mothers aunt ) and they eventually landed at my house 🤷‍♀️ my father was none too happy about this ! I played stupid on it ! My
father should not have been giving me things to his second wife he should have been giving them to me and my sister

Antique dishes - see above they belong to my mother

Family quilt made by my great great grandmother ( mothers side ) again see above

I’ve purchased an armoire once estate sake and refinished it I absolutely love this I consider a treasured item it’s as big as our house🤣🤣

I once went to an estate the woman was a hoarder she had things from the beginning of time 😳 I purchased so many things from that sale I have a lot of treasured items that are very old !

I’m very grateful for second or third hand items - you will often find me at the antique mall shopping away !!!

Another vote for hand-me-down clothes! I used to love getting a big bag from my older cousin (fashion show time 🤩) and I have equally fond memories of my younger cousin "shopping" my closet and telling me what she was excited to get when I outgrew it.

A globe DH and I bought an estate sale when we were furnishing our first house.

The antique Mickey Mouse things the kids I babysit for have given me over the years.

My great grandmother’s china- It’s really not my thing, but I remember it coming out for special occasions when I was younger since it’s such a large set. I used it a bit before we got enough of our own, but it’s very old and I don’t want to lose any more pieces. It now sits on display as a fond memory of the people and special meals.

Cousins’ Holly Hobbie Oven - I didn’t find out until I was older that we’re not really related, but we’ve always called them cousins. At my great grandmother’s funeral, I remember my mom getting a bunch of hand me downs from the “cousins.” It brought some joy to a sad day. This oven was like the Easy Bake. I made lots of barely edible creations and I always thought it was cuter than the more popular one that everyone else had.

Mom’s finds- My mother is a phenomenal thrifter and junk finder. It used to embarrass me as a kid, but she really has found some incredible things. In their last house, they had a neighbor who would trash all kinds of things with decent resale value that was brand new to barely used. I remember she made a pretty penny on all of the new and barely used American Girl stuff that they trashed. Some of her thrift shop bag and watch finds have been incredible.

When I think of hand me downs, my first thought is clothing.
When I was pregnant, a mom of one of my students gave me her maternity clothes. A money-saver for sure and also they were great for work and many other situations.

My Aunt mailed me a bunch of baby clothes when my daughter was born. Hand me down baby clothes are the best! They are soft and there is no worrying about them getting stained. I, of course, paid this forward to other friends and family.

When my daughter was in high school she was in a play where she needed a wedding dress. We found the perfect dress in a thrift store!

Honorable Mention; a friend of mine ran a consignment shop. It was so great to be able to buy Polly Flinders dresses and GAP clothing without their outrageous prices!

Sunday hug to all :)

To, I pray, be a kind person of strong Christian faith I believe was and is God's call to me.

Books I have gotten over the years both at used bookstores and also through the online book swap site I am a member of.

Dad has his father's, my beloved Grandpa Sam's, bedside lamp which means a lot to both of us.

I love second hand things - I tell my kids I was a recycle-reuse-reduce person before it was fashionable!

1. My piano in my living room was my grandmother's. It is beautiful to this day!

2. I bought 8 place settings plus lots of accessory pieces of the Lenox Christmas dishes from our local facebook trader page. I love being able to use them at Christmas, but would have never paid retail prices to have them! I think I paid around $50 for everything she had.

3. One of the tops I still wear today, I bought from our local facebook trader page back when it first started. I'm not entirely sure when that was, but I also bought a lot of my kids jeans from there. They only wanted American Eagle and I always watched for their sizes to be posted and snagged them whenever i could - usually just for $5 a pair. Super deal when they were going to grow out of them by the end of the year!

As always I have enjoyed all of your answers. Thank you, friends. I just thought of a special gift that was handed down to me. Early into the pandemic my friend Terri gifted me her late mother's Nativity set. Terri shared how special it was to her beloved mom. She trusted dad and I to care for it means a lot.

Thanks, WDWEPCOT. God willing, I will share a picture of our Nativity set this year.

Happy Monday to all :)

I well remember being thrilled and so thankful to finally find toilet paper and paper towels in March 2020. I believe there was a two package of each limit per person at that time too because it was so hard to find.

Dad and I also, especially me right now as I regain strength in my feet and legs use a lot of antibacterial hand wipes.

Various everyday food staples from soup to applesauce during the course of the pandemic have been harder to find and much more costly. I pray to never take for granted again being able to find most anything dad and I often use!

My parents were children during the Great Depression, so they instilled in us the ability to make do with what you have. That came in very handy when the pandemic hit. I think many people realized just how much we take a fully stocked grocery store for granted. I am very thankful now for the ability to simply make a list and go to the store, knowing that for the most part everything on that list will be there.

I would probably say my home should go on this list. It’s easy to take for granted that you have a safe place to live, until you don’t. I’m very thankful for my home.

I am also thankful for the ability to read and write. Sometimes it’s easy to forget that there are people who don’t have access to education, even in my own country, for a myriad of reasons. My mom was an elementary school teacher, and she taught me to read on my own before I entered kindergarten because it was so important to her. Being able to read for knowledge or for entertainment is so valuable to me, and to turn around and use my words to educate or entertain others is a privilege.

TOLIET PAPER !!! Lord have mercy I’ve never been so thankful in my life for something that was so scares and so hard to find and come by as toilet paper I almost had to use newspaper🤣🤣 I was literally down to borrowing some from my boss because I was out and could not obtain any anywhere never wanna experienced that again

I am blessedly thankful and grateful for my house having been homeless once I will forever and always cherish and be grateful for having a place to live

I am grateful for the things that I have and I cherish and take care of them I earned them and I value them I don’t mean to sound snotty or anything I just know a lot of people that are handed things and they don’t seem to appreciate them and I often think to myself someday that person is not going to be there to hand you things what are you going to do then?? I like to purchase from places that give back or help out people in need - you may pay more but it goes to a good cause and I feel better about doing it as I feel I’m helping someone !

I’m very grateful for me education - again I earned it - it took a long time as I worked and went to school at night one class at a time as that was all I could barely afford but I did it !! I scrimped and saved every dime!! I knew my grocery cost down to the penny - I had a running joke with the grocery guy every week he would say how much do you think it’s going to be and I would tell him and if I was correct he would double my coupons!! I always made sure I was in his lane!! I had a lot of coupons doubled !! Bless him !!! We all know what it’s like when you first start off your dirt poor ! I’m very grateful for what I have and I feel truly blessed ! Things could always be worse!! I was told myself someone else’s got it a lot worse than you always remember that!

After living through the worst of the pandemic, I think we're all pretty thankful for all of the things we had that were hot commodities during that time. I remember being so thankful that DH had just done a big Costco run. He had no idea all of the stuff he'd just stocked up on would end up leaving us pretty well off through the worst of it. I guess if I'm going to get into specifics...

A good towel - There's nothing like being able to dry off with good sized towel that's fluffy/soft (but absorbent) and also dries quickly.

The right pillow(s) and blankets - I've started traveling with my own (if possible) because it makes all the difference in getting a good night's sleep.

Saved Car seat/mirror settings - This may not be boring enough, but having had several rentals of late, a lot of road tripping, teaching kids to drive, and having to share the kids' truck for a few days...it's something boring that I really miss when I don't have it. If DH or either of the girls drives my vehicle, they always have to change things around. I was so happy to finally get a car with a programmable seat/mirror setup. No more adjusting and readjusting to try and get the position and visibility settings back to my own. I have two presets, but driver 2 keeps changing. It was DD15, but I've been pushing her to do most of her driving in the truck, so it's now DH because we both drove on the trip to CA. It doesn't really matter...as long as nobody resets driver 1. :D

Good Monday Morning Friends!

#1 - Paper Towels - I love Bounty or Sam's Club Paper Towels. They make my life so much easier, especially with little Otis having accidents on the kitchen floor (which are getting less by the way :thumbsup2).

#2 - NonStick Spray - Pam, or something like it, really makes life easier when it comes to food not sticking to your cookware.

#3 - Paper Clips - I use paperclips every day at work to help keep different papers organized. There's not a day that goes by, that I don't use a paper clip.

1. I follow a group on Nosebook (as my BIL calls it) called the Dull Men's Club and it celebrates the duller things in life. I love the group and it makes me laugh everyday!

2. Spreadsheets (this maybe should have gone on the nerdy day), but I'm thankful for my boring spreadsheets. They save me a lot of time and I actually like putting them together.

3. Stars / the sky in general - they're literally there everyday, but I like just looking at them. Nothing exciting, but just pretty and peaceful!
