The What's For Dinner Thread - November '09(recipe index in OP)

Marilyn Give the plows a wide berth. They are most likely all very tired after working extremely long hours.

I heard yesterday on the news 49 out of 50 states have snow. They never said if this has happened anytime in the past.:confused3 Global warming or not this is wierd weather.

Well that PW short rib recipe is a definite keeper. Other than the chopping it is easy and taste really good. Some how I was blessed with a kid that does not appreciate the wonders of good gravy. Where did this kid come from. He does eat candy he collects it now the gravy thing. He was given a chocolate reese heart on thursday, it is staring at me from the frig still. that's it he is from Mars :rotfl2:

Tonight is Chinese since we are celebrating Chinese New Year. It is the year of the tiger. I now have the Rocky song stuck in my head Eye of the tiger. So now you all can join me.

Just popping in to say Hi! We had a horrible travel day yesterday...delayed flight & horrible weather but we're making up for it today. We opened up the Tequila Bar aka The Ditch today....Margarita flight...yum! Oh and we had an excellent meal at Il Mulino last night!

Have fun! I had a dream last night that John and I flew down to Dinsey for a weekend. I don't know if I could go without Laura and the kids anymore though!

Catching up on food, Friday I made fondue with baguette, brussel sprouts, and bratwurst for dipping. No picture. There's a lot of fondue left so I am trying to think of some kind of cheesy potato dish to make.

Yesterday I got out my mixer again and made bread...this time I made a foccacia, topped with scallions, rosemary, and parmesean. It was really good.

Then I made a couple of dishes from my new Mario Batali book. This is a "winter caprese salad," slow roasted tomatoes with buffalo mozzarella and basil pesto:

4355222674_43d99e642e.jpg

I forget what the main course was called, but it is a pork chop in a pepper sauce. It had lots of red pepper flakes and was really spicy!!

4354475799_2c4c22522c.jpg

I had the pepper sauce with chicken. We have lots of peppers left so I see sausage and pepper subs in our future! The food for the upcoming week is going to be pretty junky because we are eating in front of the TV every day watching the Olympics.

Today Laura is bringing over tuna, I have to figure out what I am doing with it.

Good morning!

I just want to pop in. I have been trying to keep up with this thread and am failing miserably. I guess that's what happens when you are out having fun all the time. :lmao:

I'll try to catch up later. Some friends wanted me to go with them to parades today but I said no. I knew before the weekend started I was not going to go to all the ones I got invited to go with too. It's too much and I'm not THAT interested! I might go to the one this afternoon/evening but it's going to be CROWDED because the weather is nice and Drew Brees will be in it. I'm just not sure fighting the traffic and crowds is worth it, but dog gone it I want to see Drew Brees!!

WFD- going out for dinner not sure where

Happy Valentine's Day! I hope you are all having a good one!

I made pink pancakes for the kids this morning, with Strawberry milk. Alan and I got them each cards and they opened them with breakfast.

We don't really do gifts for Valentine's day. With my birthday just a couple of weeks ago, I really don't need anything, and I'd rather save the money for something else later.

I am making my roast with carrots and onions for dinner. We'll also have jello salad, and Pioneer Woman's hot crash potatoes. We were going to do artichokes as well, but they were 2.50 per artichoke, and I just couldn't handle that! I made a heart shaped cake for dessert, and the kids will get heart shaped boxes of candy with dinner. That will be it! We'll watch a movie later tonight as a family. Something lovey, but not too lovey. Maybe The Princess Bride.

We took the kids to see The Princess and the Frog yesterday, and we all loved it! Even Jacob and Mary! Definitely one we will own! Can't wait for March 16 when it is available on DVD.

Sheryl - I hope you have a fantastic trip! Can't wait to hear about it!

Kathy - Glad to see you are having a good time! Keep it up!

Aimee - Continue to take it easy, ok? I'm glad your friends are taking good care of you!

I'm kind of groggy right now, due to cold medicine for my sore throat. Can't focus too well
Have a great day!

Happy Valentine's Day!

Zachy and I made pink pancakes this morning too, although I'm not as creative as Glynis and did not think of strawberry milk:)

Dinner last night was pizza. I'm making a lemon chicken orzo soup for dinner tonight. Hope everyone is enjoying their weekend and loved ones!

I am having a dinner party tonite to celebrate this year
on the menu salad carmelized shallot mashed potatoes, seared scallops and tenderloin steaks in manhattan sauce roasted asparagus and two friends are bringing deserts I'm making placecard in the shape of hearts tied with a Lindt truffle let's see if the truffles make it too dessert

How did it go? You're welcome to FedEx the leftovers my way - sounds delicious!

I have been a bit preoccupied lately, so I want to apologize. I have been spending alot of time helping my parents out and worrying about them. I feel like I have neglected this thread. For that I am sorry, I cherish our friendships and promise to try to get back in to the swing of things here.

No need to apologize! Life gets in the way :goodvibes

Oh, Did I tell y'all that we are the proud new owners of BLT points! DD asked her Dad why we thought we needed more points. He told her that was his Grand-Baby investment! She looked like this:  I was smart & stayed out of it! :rolleyes1:laughing:

Awesome! :cool1:

Did you see him on Ellen? What a cutie patootie!

My sleep cycle is all screwed up - I was up until 630 this morning :confused3 I am going to have to drug myself to sleep normally tonight.

Last I heard, people were going to bring food everyday this week and we'll slow it down if it gets to be too much. I am cleaning out my freezer so maybe we can stretch some meals out that way too. I don't think anyone is planning to come today, though, since it's VDay :lovestruc so I told DH he can pick up something like sushi or steak at a local restaurant. We'll see what happens.

Hey ya'll, sorry I've neglected the thread too. I can't seem to find the "sweet spot" zone for my internet signal in FL yet and that makes things slow going.

We're back in NOLA for Mardi Gras. I'm uploading pics on FB today of the new place if anyone wants o have a look.

I have been following along FB on my phone, although that seems a bit inadequate with everything going on.

WFD- we've been living on fast food and frozen pizza. Whatever's easy with limited cookware and dishes...:sad2:

I'll be glad to not be "in between" anymore.

Happy Valentines Day!

Today was the Daytona 500 so we had our neighbors over for wings, hot dogs and kraut and potato salad. i also made a raspberry marble cake with raspberry whipped cream frosting. My friend brought over an apple cake so we ate well.

Welby came by with Nola for a while. That was good because we had her Valentine and Kady had one for her as well.

Did I tell you all about teh chickens she rescued the other day? Someone dumped 4 off in the woods. A kid saw them adn asked my neighbor to help so he came to get Buddy. Well with that boxing glove on he was not able to but we did call Welby and she and the two kids caught the poor things and she has them in a box stall at the farm. Turns out that there were five but she could not find the last...it was probably gone by then, but now she is trying to place 3 roosters ane one hen. She does not want them in with her "girls". Between the extra birds and Petey...who is very fresh, she is :dance3: Buddy took Kady down to feed the animals today, Kady loves to go!

BBL

Nancy - how cool about the chickens!

Dinner was :headache: tonight. DH totally bombed on the VDay front but he's been very sweet in other ways so I'm not going to make a big deal out of it. At around 8pm, I threw some shredded cheese on tortilla chips and made myself some nachos. Blah.

Another quiet do nothing day around here, I really need to get motivated. :headache:

Schools are closed here through Tuesday, lord only knows when the kids will go back. There are still lots of roads that aren't completely plowed and of course all the sidewalks haven't been done either.

Forgot to tell you all, I made PW's Sesame Noodles and added some shrimp. It was all I could do not to eat all of it in one day! :cloud9: I sauted the shrimp in a little olive oil and garlic then finished it off with a little of the sauce.

Going to make Olive Oil Cakes with Lemon and Thyme tomorrow.

Amy the dinner went very well the food was really good and everything came out hot and at the same time. I was a little anxious at the last minute because the scallops and steaks are cooked very briefly and there were a lot of them . I was flipping scallops like crazy. One friend brought a strawberry trifle and another apple cobbler and home made fudge yum
After dinner we played a Rhode Island trivia game

Quick Ann , name a department store with branches in Pawtucket and Warwick

Yesterday was a relaxing day My husband and I went over to the East side of providence and walked thru the historic streets and thru Brown University then came home and watched the Olympics. Laura, you and Calli must have loved watching the skating and some of those commercials of the little girls skating . I think it was a chevrolet commercial, it was so sweet That mogul course looks painful.
My husband made dinner pasta with sundried tomatoes ,artichoke hearts and asparagus ,salad and bread and a little wine ,red of course to celebrate the day
tonites dinner leftovers from Saturday I will cook up the last of the filet mignon sorry Amy

.

we had a year like that when my kids were little. A snowstorm before Easter closed schools for a week and then Spring vacation. Crazy! I thought they would never get out of school that year.

Amy the dinner went very well the food was really good and everything came out hot and at the same time.

Great timeing! Lately I am timing challenged so Hats off to you!

Nancy - how cool about the chickens!
.

Welby is not happy! She has been able to place two but not even the local rescues want roosters. She cannot put them in with her hens so Buddy keeps telling her he will take them off her hands....hmmmm....that is never going to happen! What has us peeved is that someone dumped these animals off in an area that has plenty of animals who would make them dinner. Definately a nasty thing. We used to have folks drop off cats at the farm. Yup....nice farm, kitty that they no longer wanted was going to do well with feral barn cats just waiting to kill them. I cannot tell you how many kittens we caught and placed just to have more find their way in.

You know I will be heading over there soon!

Have a great day!

Feeling better today? You must have the same thing I have had, and it is not fun. I loved all those big kisses and hugs I got but paying the piper is the pits. I have been taking Robitussin CF daytime and have not been too foggy. If you can find it you may feel better, it is hard to take care of teh little one when you struggle to stay focused.

Good morning!

:rotfl2:

I am not sure what we will have for dinner. I need to check the fridge and see what we have. I am trying not to toss food out so maybe I'll take all those veggies I bought, thinking I would go back to WW meals, and make a nice soup. Buddy will not be please but I can make him some tuna.

Joanne and Ann, I lived in RI for 3 years so the trivia question gave me a little laugh this morning. Thanks!

Glynis- hope you're feeling better today.

Aimee- sorry your dinner wasn't what your were expecting but it sounds like an otherwise good day.

Nancy- great story about the chickens.

I think dinner tonight will be a fish taco salad. Zachy's been asking to go out to eat since I got him out of bed this morning but I'm trying to clear out my fridge and freezer before we go on vacation in two weeks so I doubt I'll be persuaded.

Good morning! I hope you all had a good weekend. I am going to the Museum of Science today with my parents, Laura, Liam and Caili to see the Harry Potter exhibit. John has to work. :sad1:

Here are photos from yesterday. I made another Mario Batali recipe for tuna with a salad of shiitakes, raddichio, blood oranges, arugula, roasted garlic, and some other stuff in a blood orange vinagrette. It ws kind of meh. Laura summed it up best by saying there were too many flavors in each bite. It looked pretty though.

My Mom dislikes tuna, so Laura seared her a piece of swordfish which we served with leftover pesto and roasted tomatoes from that winter caprese salad:

Here's John's lunchbox for today. That's curried chicken salad in the front, and he also gets a yogurt:

I'm sure you being home is such a treat dinner was nothing to fret over:thumbsup2

I hope everyone had a wonderful Valentine's Day with their families.:lovestruc

Sheryl, hope you made it safe & sound! "A" must be excited beyond words:goodvibes

Kat, let the fun continue!!!!!!

Nan, I love chickens.......I always wanted chickens & 2 white ducks.
Kady is my kind of girl.....How is Welby feeling?

Hoping everyone is snuggled in on this long holiday weekend.

Morning all! Another cold one here in the deep south. Seriously, I'm contemplating a move to the Caribbean about now.

Becky - that Harry Potter exhibit sounds like a lot of fun, and something I'd love to do. Is that a traveling exhibit, do you know? We went to Houston in 2005 to see a Lord of the Rings exhibit that was pretty awesome.

Laura - I also thought about Caili as I watched the skating last night. They had a commericial about Olympic Moms and showed all these kids doing different sports, with a little girl skater that looked to be near Caili's age.

Aimee - I'm sorry your VD didn't go like you hoped, but I understand you letting it go. I'm sure your DH is probably a bit overwhelmed. Keep resting girl, you need that rest!

Glynis - hope you are feeling better.

Maria - glad you made it home safe and sound.

Tonight's dinner will be filets, asparagus and O'hana scalloped potatoes. We were supposed to do that yesterday, but ended going out to dinner with my Matt and Sara to celebrate her birthday, which was earlier in the week.

Hey y'all

We're on the road again! Finally, I had trouble falling asleep last night. But happily we r now 134 miles out. Alexis keeps thinking she sees the TOT! Lol

we'll head into MK after cheking into WLV!

Hope everyone has a great day!

Maria - Not another word!!!! You have more than enough on your plate. You are a wondeful friend.

Sheryl - Congrats on the BLT points! :cool1::cool1:

Kat - Glad you are having a good time.

Ann - No worries. Like Lauri said, we all go through it.

I'm posting quickly because my stupid computer is acting up. I have tried this post THREE times and my computer will reboot each time. So I'm going to try a quickie.

Dinner tonight is swedish meatballs and mashed potatoes.

Thinking about you all!

And, if any of you are wondering, Hailey does NOT like the snow. She didn't like me taking her outside when it was falling, and she did not want to go out in it. I opened our front door and brought her to the door. We could see the snow through the glass storm door. I kept pointing and telling her to look at the snow. She got so disgusted with me, she tapped on the glass door like "I see it, you idiot" and closed the wooden door.

Kenny even brought a snowball inside and handed it to her in hopes she would be interested. She picked it up, fussed at him, and handed it back. If it hadn't been for the dog, Kenny wouldn't have had anyone to play in the snow with.
