Yippee, a real live race and report!
Texas 10 Cypress race report -
Going into the race, I was hoping to break 1:20. I kinda forgot I hae this race to do and not been training hard for this or my race next weekend. Only doing about 1 tempo/interval run a week. Luckily, a front came through Houston yesterday and the temp at the start was around 60, which was pleasant. Met some friend before the start and got ready to run. For start line purposes, they have two sets of cones lined up 6 feeet apart, so no "mass start", which actually worked really well. The operator of the Texas 10 series also does the Woodlands Marathon, and this is the 6th live race they have hosted this year, and they have the process down. This one was originally scheduled for last Oct, and I had paid for the race in Dec of 2019....
As usual for the Texas 10 race series, the race is 2 lap race for the 10 miles., with this one starting at an outlet mall and doing most of the lap in a neighborhood. I started the race with a couple of club friends but all kept to ourselves while running. First lap was surprisingly decent, since I was hoping for a 1:20 race, I was happy to feel comfortable with the splits. 1 - 7:34, 2 - 7:43, 3 - 7:41, 4 - 7:39, 5 - 7:31.
Second lap, I was tracking down a couple of folks, and decided that I would try to pick up the pace between mile 7 and 8 and see how long I could go for it. Turned out, I held on really well, but only passed a couple of other 10 milers the last couple of miles. Splits: 6 - 7:37, 7 - 7:42, 8 - 7:27, 9 - 7:13, 10 - 6:57 (my watch had .98 for the last mile).
Overall, really happy with a 1:15:04. 1st lap was 38:00:9 and lap 2 was 37:03:4. this was actually my third fastest 10 miler...
42/168 overall, 32/85 male, 6/13 age group. Stupid fast age group this year! I was over 3 1/2 minutes behind 5th and the top 2 were at 1:01:01 and 1:01:10
