The Running Thread - 2021

I’m looking to upgrade from my current 935 to the 945 for exactly this reason. I’m worried that I won’t be able to complete the race within the 935s battery life and the last thing I want to be worried about late in a race is having to recharge my watch battery! How do you like the Fenix? I’ve shied away from them because of the extra weight and cost that comes with the metal chassis.

The 945 is an amazing watch. Battery life is far better than my old 920. You might want to wait a month or two though. Latest rumors based on FCC docs hint at a 955 coming soon.

I felt guilty when I purchased the 945...it was a lot of money. However, I love the long battery life, the music storage and all the cool bells and whistles. I do get a lot of use out of it.

I love my 945. I'm waiting for the FR955/Fenix 7 announcement to decide if I'll upgrade. If I do there might be a deal to be had on an FR945. I wish Garmin had a trade-in option.

I think I’ve found my new shoes. For the past two and a half years, after trying everything the stores had, I’ve only been comfortable running in the Mizuno Wave Sky 2. I went through 2 pairs and put 3 more in the closet when they went on sale. The Sky 3 was a good fitting replacement but I’m not a fan of the knit upper(not sure why, it just seems off a bit).
A few weeks ago I tried everything again and found the Saucony Triumph 18, the fit was instant comfort! I’ve since worn out my last pair of Mizuno and put 2 five mile runs and a 13 mile run on the Triumphs. They feel great even on the long run so here’s hoping it stays that way. I’m excited to finally have a new option.
If I get really lucky, the Endorphin Speed will fit the same and then I will have a race day option as well.

Thanks! I’m in no rush to upgrade. I won’t need the extra battery life until next March, most likely. It has been interesting researching likely new watches and features since seeing your post about the 955, though. I’ll probably handle this like shoes. Wait for the new model to come out and then look for a deal on the 945.

I had the 935 for may years but it was a pain to be 80 miles in and put the watch on a charger and either hold onto it or put it in my vest. The battery had also dwindled to the point it would only last about 14 hours.

The Fenix 6 is a bit heavier but I do not notice the weight. I do notice the larger size, as I have to crank down the strap to get an accurate HR and it is not consistent. I am seeing an external HR monitor in my future. It does have fantastic battery life and it adjusts for heat (good in Houston) and altitude (not so needed in Houston). It does not seem to cope well if you run 60-70 miles a week. It is constantly suggesting I take a 'rest day' and bounces me between 'unproductive' and 'productive' in training status.

April 2021 totals
From Otter Rapids to Moose Factory - Northman Challenge completed

Distance: 235km (146mi)
Average pace: 6m40s/km (10:44/mi)
YTD: 765km on 2021km

Spring is gorgeous and this month is my biggest running volume to date (again!)

I read all the races’ reports and am happy for our fellow runners and DISers. I sometimes have a ping of envy as we are nowhere near relaxing restrictions here, even less have in-person racing. But then I go for a LR, DD asks to come for the warmup (what better starting line), sometimes DH comes along or I run to my mom’s who makes me lunch (beats post-run snacks) and DH comes and pick me up (great supporters) so I am grateful, everyone is healthy so far.

Nutrition tasting and testing, so happy to have made this confinement year fun that way:

Tailwind Colorado Cola - The discovery of the month. The cola flavour with caffein was not acidic or metallic as I would have expected. It could easily be my top drinkable nutrition.

Cliff Blocks Margarita - Just yummy mix of sweet and salty. Unfortunately, that flavour seems hard to get in Canada.

Gu Lemon Sublime - It was good, not sublime. Not that lemony either.

Huma+ Raspberry Chocolate - The first Huma gel that I would gladly accept. Was it the + or was it the cocoa? Well a few km later, I tried...

Huma Chocolate - Yes, it is the chocolate. Somehow it makes the texture feel more normal. That one was decent too. And, to be sure, a few more km later...

Huma Raspberry- Like eating raspberry jam (with seeds) with a spoon. I missed the chocolate. And conclude that 3 Huma gels are not enough to keep me really going on a Half Marathon.

April Totals:

Running: 80 miles
Average Pace: 9:31

Another light month for me, but considering all I have going on, my mileage is surprisingly high. Pace is the fastest it's been in the last year.

I missed a couple of yoga sessions and strength workouts, but am back on schedule for those.

I'm racing tomorrow:

05/01 - @OldSlowGoofyGuy - Lake Hartwell Dam 5K (Goal: 24:59 / Results:TBD)

April Running:
Total distance: 114 mi
Average pace: 11:26/mi

This month flew by! Mother's Day 10 Miler next weekend, then I guess I go into base training mode over the summer until fall race season. I still want to keep my mileage up to get to 2121 km running this year. 2021 miles is out of the question for me.

I ran a highly respectable 108.34 miles in April. Other than that--and my daily dog walks--my other XT has been fairly non-existent. Right now only managing yoga once or so a week and have put strength training to the side since I tweaked my elbow. OTOH, I've been volunteering on one of my off-run days at the Vaccine clinic at Ford Field doing wheelchair escorts, and that involves a little bit of strength to manage (but it's a pleasure to see so many people coming in to do their part.)

I love my 645 - it broke late March (known defect) and I went back to my old 230. Missed it even more. Garmin sent another 645. My 920 is sitting around as my triathlon race watch and I might have used 2 times in the last 18 months. 945 looks like a great watch/.

April 2021 Training Summary

Running duration = 15:54 hours
Running mileage = 117 miles
Average Pace = 8:09 min/mile (about 60 sec/mile slower than estimated Marathon Tempo)
Average HR = 137 (11 bpm lower than Marathon Pace)
Indoor Cycling duration = 21:30 hours
Indoor Cycling mileage = 370 miles
Indoor Cycling average power = 148 watts (58% FTP)
Indoor Cycling average Normalized Power = 154 watts (61% FTP)
Strength = 3:17 hours
Total Training Time = 40:42 hours

Racing a marathon tomorrow. Temps look good, no rain, decent chance of cloudiness, but some high winds. All in all, not a bad forecast. One day either direction would have been a different story. I truly despise tapering and the mental gymnastics that come with it. Especially as someone who has had my fair share of injuries over the last four years. Trust the training, enjoy the victory lap, and do the best on that day.

April

Started an upswing in my training.

running - 96 miles - started to increase my mileage.
biking - 284 - took Spring Break off missed some rides.

Burned 25,378 calories between running, biking and strength and conditioning classes. No bad with a "down week" for Spring Break.

April 2021 Totals

Running
distance: 85.2 mi
average pace: 12:23 min/mi
total time: 17.58 h
comments: I had my first trail race, which was fun! That was last weekend, so no running for me since then. I am realizing that doing more trail running means my running mileage tends to be lower, as well as the average pace. But I have really enjoyed it.

Tennis
Only 4 h this month. I opted out of some tennis on my peak-training weekend and race weekend, so this is definitely low.

Walking
distance: 67.1 mi
comments: This is very similar to last month. I have been too busy with work to walk a lot, but hopefully I'll be increasing this over the summer. It really helps out for CRAW!
