And I forgot to post my March summary last month...

March Training Summary
Running Miles: 236.9 miles
Running Time: 36:32:06
Average Pace: 9:15/mi
Average HR: 131/min

April Miles = 127

Miles were a bit light this month due to taking a few days off at the beginning of the month while I was at Disney and a few days off at the end of the month nursing a strained hamstring. I had 2 races planned for the Spring - a 10K in May and a half in June. After last year’s craziness, I was waiting as long a possible before registering. Unfortunately, The 10K reached capacity before I registered. But I am all set for the half in June which will be my first race of 2021!! I am a bit nervous about racing after straining my calf in January and now pulling my hamstring in April. Both injuries happened when I was doing a speed workout.

January = 145
February = 111
March = 141

2021 total miles = 524

April 2021
Miles: 104.4
Time: 17:43:25
Average Pace: 10:11

April was a hard month for me. I’m still dealing with some health issues and missed three runs, but I made my goal of 100+ miles. May shall prove to be tricky with the weather heating up and so many horse shows on the weekends.

05/01 - @OldSlowGoofyGuy - Lake Hartwell Dam 5K (Goal: 24:59 / Results: 24:38). 3rd place AG, 27 out of 218 Overall.

Best Dam Run in Georgia! Race is point-to-point, with a quick bus ride to the start. The start is in South Carolina, with the finish in Georgia. Dead flat. Garmin shows 74 feet elevation gain. Most of the race is across the dam, with Lake Hartwell on the right.

I had a nice chat with Mr. @Disney at Heart (the race director) after the finish. Didn't stick around to see @Disney at Heart finish the 10K.

Got stuck in a 5 mile long traffic jam on the way home. I was tired and hungry when I got home. The celebratory meal was standing in front of the refrigerator and inhaling random food items.

A great race! Definitely re-adding this one to my to-do list.

With last years races being cancelled and nothing on the schedule I’ve been maintaining with slow easy runs and again starting to feel like no improvement is happening. Then I scored a new pair of endorphin speed that I have been looking for and decided to do a quick five mile tempo run this morning (usually around 8’45”/ mile)
I forgot what it’s like to run! I had to slow myself down after the first mile. It was an unofficial 5k PR and if I had paid attention, I would have gone another .7 for my best 10k.

Congrats to all who have gotten back to racing, I’m looking and hoping to do the same

Vintage Park Half Race report

Ughh, that sucked! Rained off and on around Houston the last couple of days, and the race sent an email about watching the weather. Checked email when I woke up and saw that all was on as scheduled, the overnight rain and storms were off to the east, but temps around 70 and a couple thousand percent humidity, basically just plain steamy. The race opened up registration about 2 months ago and was 3 weeks later than the original scheduled date. They ended up with over 1000 registered for the half and almost 500 for the 5k. Last Monday, they wanted people to register for a start time, and they planned on sending 2 runners off every 3 seconds. They corral was setup with a ton of cones for social distancing, but not a soul checking to see what people signed up for a starting time when entering the corral, and the times were supposed to help self seed based on projected pace. So the idea was good, execution was poor.

I had a 6:51 start time, but ended up starting around 6:58. I was going to try to stay around 8 minute miles, because of the weather. The first mile was 7:36, oops. Miles 2 and 3 around on a paved trail around a nature preserve lake, and with the start setup, plenty of spacing by the time we got to the trail. After the preserve, we are back on roads the rest of the race.

Miles 2 - 8:00, 3 - 8:01, 4 - 7:46, 5 - 7:54, 6 - 7:58, 7 - 7:59.

Around mile 4, the clouds decided to clear out, so the temps went up even more. Miles 6-8 are on a major road and to the east with no shade, and my personal battery drained quickly. The rest of the race was just trying to survive to the end.

8 - 8:05, 9 - 9:11, 10 - 9:20, 11 - 10:18, 12 - 9:22, 13 - 9:44. Finished with a 1:52:51.

Except for the start corral mess, the rest of the race was well run with covid rules they setup. The water stops were all bottled water and gatorade, and that worked out well and there was pretty decent spacing all around the course.

162/978 overall, 121/500 male, and 9/54 age group.

April Training Summary
Running Miles: 125.82
Running Time: 21:48:23
Average Pace: 10:21/mi
Average HR: 141/min

Extras:
Walking Miles: 101.61
Rolling 12mo Running Miles: 1,998.93

April mileage was the lowest I’ve had in quite some time due to a couple of recovery weeks from my March 100k followed by a week of walking around WDW. I was probably due for a down month, but at least I extended my streak of 125+ mile months to 15. The CRAW has been a great motivator to keep overall mileage up, too.

May promises a return to more normal running volumes. I’ve got the rescheduled Tobacco Road Marathon in two weeks and plan to start a new training cycle for the Weymouth Woods 50k, which will be run over Labor Day Weekend, shortly after. Both races promise to be hot, humid affairs, but hey, it’s just good to have live races back!

So glad you had a good race. And hope to see you back the first Saturday in May 2022. The music, water stations, after-race food, awards, and togetherness should be back for next year. I was glad that the CDC relaxed mask guidelines on outdoor events last week so that we didn’t have to be “mask police” for the day. I was giving out 5k bibs in the R-Z line, but didn’t see you when you picked your bib up. I should have requested to work in the earlier alphabet line!!!

I finished my first real race in 15 months:
Lake Hartwell Dam Run 10K
Time: 1:03:47.9
Pace: 10:17
Place: 50/86
AG: 1/4
Not speedy compared to you young runners, but good for me. I now have a POT for Disney, Peachtree, ATL 10 and Half, or any race distance through half marathon.

ETA: The 10K runs from GA to SC on the road across the Savannah River bridge, and then at the turn around goes onto the Lake Hartwell Dam and crosses back into GA. This is the only time each year since 9/11 that the dam is open to the public all the way across.

I have a foot/toe/shoe question.

When I originally got fitted I got NB 880s. Neutral shoe, probably average cushion. Very much like a “normal” shoe with mesh panels in a “framed” toe box. Then I also bought a pair of 1080s to try out the extra cushion (when SiL and I started talking about doing a full), and I really prefer how it feels. But the whole upper/toe box is like a stretchy knit, and there’s not that “frame” of not-stretchy material to keep the toe box in one shape...it basically just hugs your foot.

Yesterday when I attempted my 10mi run (which ended up be 7 for a lot of reasons) at about mile 4 the side of my big toe on both feet felt sore....which is something I had been starting to notice for the last 2 weeks.....like my 2nd toe was getting smashed against my big toe. At mile 5 I stopped and changed out of my 1080s and into my 880s. The toe box is definitely more roomy in the 880s and my toes didn’t feel like they were smashing together. But then I had just general whole-foot discomfort, like my body was angry at my for taking away my cushy shoes.

I have balega blister resist socks and those are kind of tight, but I’ve also been wearing those for a few weeks, so I don’t know if it’s a shoe issue, a sock issue, those 2 things combined, or what. I really don’t want to have to spend money on yet another pair of shoes because the 880s probably only have 150mi on them and the 1080s around 100 (and 90% of all those miles are treadmill), so this is NOT a shoe-age issue.

Help?

Have you tried running in each pair of shoes with different socks? Maybe Balega Hidden Comfort so they’re not quite as snug? That might give you a better idea of whether you’re looking at a sock or toe box issue without having to invest in different shoes. Unfortunately, my gut feel from your story is that it’s more likely to be an issue with the toe boxes between the two shoe styles than with the socks.

I'm not sure if this is the exact issue you are talking about, but I have the New Balance 1080s too, and coming from an Altra shoe the heel drop is dramatically different. Running with the New Balance 1080s, the front part of my foot, especially inner big toe side, would be sore after runs. I asked my physically therapist about it, and she said that soreness in the front of the foot is associated with shoes with higher heels. I'm not sure the exact reason--I think the front of your foot has to bend a bit more when you are toeing off. So if the heel on the 1080s is higher than the 880s, maybe that could have something to do with it.

Surprisingly, if they’re the newest versions, the 880 (10 mm) has a higher heel drop than the 1080s (8 mm).

I do have a pair of feetures around here somewhere....it’s just strange to me that it wasn’t an issue for the last 2 months, but maybe it’s the longer mileage that’s causing more foot swelling? I will definitely try different socks.

The drop between the 880 and 1080 is a little different. The soreness is kind of between the side of my toenail and the edge of my toe.

The worst part? I was about to buy another pair of 1080s because one of last-year’s colors is so cheap right now and I wanted to have another pair for when my current ones wear out.

That's probably not it then!

You could try body gliding your toes' hot spots to prevent chafing and blisters forming. Or maybe you need a wide size if you don't already wear wide or to go a size up.
