Yippee, a real live race and report!

Texas 10 Cypress race report -

Going into the race, I was hoping to break 1:20. I kinda forgot I hae this race to do and not been training hard for this or my race next weekend. Only doing about 1 tempo/interval run a week. Luckily, a front came through Houston yesterday and the temp at the start was around 60, which was pleasant. Met some friend before the start and got ready to run. For start line purposes, they have two sets of cones lined up 6 feeet apart, so no "mass start", which actually worked really well. The operator of the Texas 10 series also does the Woodlands Marathon, and this is the 6th live race they have hosted this year, and they have the process down. This one was originally scheduled for last Oct, and I had paid for the race in Dec of 2019....

As usual for the Texas 10 race series, the race is 2 lap race for the 10 miles., with this one starting at an outlet mall and doing most of the lap in a neighborhood. I started the race with a couple of club friends but all kept to ourselves while running. First lap was surprisingly decent, since I was hoping for a 1:20 race, I was happy to feel comfortable with the splits. 1 - 7:34, 2 - 7:43, 3 - 7:41, 4 - 7:39, 5 - 7:31.

Second lap, I was tracking down a couple of folks, and decided that I would try to pick up the pace between mile 7 and 8 and see how long I could go for it. Turned out, I held on really well, but only passed a couple of other 10 milers the last couple of miles. Splits: 6 - 7:37, 7 - 7:42, 8 - 7:27, 9 - 7:13, 10 - 6:57 (my watch had .98 for the last mile).

Overall, really happy with a 1:15:04. 1st lap was 38:00:9 and lap 2 was 37:03:4. this was actually my third fastest 10 miler...

42/168 overall, 32/85 male, 6/13 age group. Stupid fast age group this year! I was over 3 1/2 minutes behind 5th and the top 2 were at 1:01:01 and 1:01:10

Man, what a great 3 days of non-scale victories!

First, Friday, regular lab results came back, I am in excellent health, just need to keep meds for cholesterol and blood pressure management (family genetics yay); doc said I have the heart of an athlete, she was shocked.

Saturday: first live race in over a year, Tri Doc 10k, came in last (it's really all super serious runners from Rogue Running group) but set a PR at 1:25;32

Today: Austin Half Marathon, in person, and set PRs for 10k and the Half (10k by 3 at 1:22:17 and the Half by a whopping FOURTEEN MINUTES at 3:11:55)

Congratulations! Awesome results!

Great race! That's really darn fast!

I also have a race report from a real race! This was a 10-mile trail race in northern Virginia. It was extremely well-organized, with wave starts and a really well-marked trail. It had rained overnight, so the course was really, really muddy single- and double-track. There were also a half-dozen stream crossings to soak the feet (no bridges).

The course was 10.4 miles and 1275 feet of elevation gain! I finished in 2:29:02, which I'm happy with for my first trail race.

I have a much more detailed report on my training blog:

Real Live Race Report!

04/25 - @OldSlowGoofyGuy - Suwanee Arts Center SuperHero 5K (Goal: 25:59 / Results: 26:07. Grand Master Winner! 17/145 overall)

My first outing in my new age group turned out pretty well.

It was a beautiful day for running: around 52 degrees, sunny, and breezy. This was a small race, postponed from yesterday due to thunderstorms. The race is out and back, starting and finishing at Suwanee Town Center. The course is paved residential streets, paved trails, and boardwalks. The boardwalk sections were slippery. Due to the rain, we ran through mud and ankle deep water at a couple of points. The 'out' is mostly downhill, so you know what that means for the 'back'. Garmin shows 150 foot total elevation gain, so it wasn't too bad. They started waves of 3 runners every 5 seconds to keep everything safe.

I put it on cruise control, knowing I needed to go faster on the downhill portions. The 'back' was OK since I knew what to expect. I managed to pass 4 runners in the last half mile.

They had the usual finish line accommodations: donuts, bananas, granola bars, water, etc. We had a real awards ceremony in the amphitheater.

Too early (not by my standards) for pizza and beer, and not much is open, so the post-run celebratory meal was a couple of drive-through Egg McMuffins, followed up with lunch and wine on the porch with a dear old friend of 40 years.

As a bonus: on the way home, I happened to pass my nephew and got a big smile and wave.

My situation is a little tough right now, but it's hard to complain after a day like today.

Congratulations! If you are the Grand Master winner in the SuperHero race, does that make you a super hero? I think so! Use your powers for good!

The photos on your blog were terrific. They are good reasons of why, excluding RunDisney races, over 90% of my running is on trails. Why pound the pavement when you can train in an example of God's glory!

Real Live Race Report!

It was obviously a day for racing! Reporting in from the April Fools Half Marathon in Atlantic City, NJ

This was my first live race in my home state since the Covid-19 shutdown, and it was a decent sized event with 523 people toeing the line. In the interest of social distancing and spreading people out on the course, the race organizers had 5 waves at 20 minute intervals they allowed people to sign-up for, with each wave getting its own send-off.

The forecast for today was cold and rainy, with the 1st wave taking off in the 40s and pouring wave. Fortunately for my wave, we were the second to last send-off and the rain stopped 10 minutes before we let off! So we had an average temp of 52 F, overcast, with a 19mph headwind or tailwind depending on the direction you were running on the out and back course starting at the Resorts Casino.

The course is roughly 8 miles on the Atlantic city boardwalk, with 5 miles on the street of Atlantic City and was well supported with water stops roughly every 2 miles. While on the boardwalk, you could look out on the Atlantic ocean. Not that I paid attention to that, if anyone else has seen the "Don't Be That Awkward Runner" video on youtube, I was definitely being the T-1000 for this race...

I went into this race without a specific time goal and hoping for the best, since I had a pretty bad mountain bike crash 4 weeks ago that left my right thigh and both knees very bruised (in fact, the bruises are still there on the thigh). At the time, I took a week off from all running trying to give my muscles a rest and a chance to heal. Even then, when I started running again I couldn't quite hit the training paces I had before my crash. I decided to take the final 3 weeks very easy and hope for the best. Before that, I'd hoped to beat my half PR of 1:51:01, but wasn't really certain what to expect on race day. I'm very happy to report, I now have a new half marathon PR of 1:48:23!

A (W&D, Princess) and B (Marathon) corrals here I come! Please Rundisney, start providing the live races again. :)

In Person Race Update:

Today I did the Gettysburg Half Marathon. I registered for the race with the goal of gettin a POT for W&D (hopefully) and for Dopey 2022.

It wasn’t a huge field but great to see a real race and excitement of fellow racers. They did two waves 10 minutes apart with each wave being an open start. We had to do masks at start and after finish line. The temp was in mid 50s.

Great course and got to see some of battlefield parts I hadn’t seen before. I was moving along well until mile 10.5 when hip pain started. But thankfully just worked thru it and the finish was downhill. Overall elevation was 355 gain. Ended up at 2:18:00 which I am super thrilled with and my third fastest half. Was shooting for a POT with hope of 2:20 and got it! So great day lol.

Hoping to see some familiar faces!
See you there! DH is a race director and I signed up for the 10K. Only about 250 total (about 1/3 the norm) entered this year, with more 5k than 10K. This was expected since the Army Corps of Engineers allowed no water stop, no awards ceremony, and masks required before and after racing. But that means fewer people to beat! “Have a good race and a safe race!”

i got the Fenix 6. Mainly because it lasts through my 100 mile races, which c my previous watches did not.

I’m looking to upgrade from my current 935 to the 945 for exactly this reason. I’m worried that I won’t be able to complete the race within the 935s battery life and the last thing I want to be worried about late in a race is having to recharge my watch battery! How do you like the Fenix? I’ve shied away from them because of the extra weight and cost that comes with the metal chassis.

Doing the 5K, probably wait around for your 10K finish.

Re: "Have a good race and have a safe race". No one knows what we're talking about, but I'll be wearing this. In case you can't tell what it is: Wristband from the memorial race.

To let everyone else in: Will Chamberlain was a local race director, who passed away in 2010. He was the nicest guy in the world, and on race morning, with a million things to do, he would stop and help you find the Porta Potty. He always finished his pre-race directions with "Have a good race and have a safe race".

Question about POT for WDW Marathon weekend:

Is there a specific requirement for the race other than it being a road race and not a relay? Does it need to be USATF sanctioned?

I believe it needs to be chip timed with results posted online. I don't believe it needs to be USATF sanctioned, although I might be wrong about that.

I had a laugh today when looking at my race photos
