I just wanted to update you on Kady. All of her tests came back negative from the gastro guy, but her pediatrician ran blood tests for allergies. She tested positive for eggs and milk. He said that he thinks that for her the milk is the culprit. I have soy milk for her, but I am going to have to learn to change my cooking style.

Good Luck to Y'all on this with Kady.:goodvibes My DD was lactose intolerant until she was about 7/8 years old. It's not all that easy to get all milk products out of thier diet. And so many things have whey products in them, it can be pretty tough, especially for little kids who have a hard time understanding why they can't have that cake & ice cream at a birthday party.:sad1: Then if you have to take eggs out of her diet too! I'm very glad it's not something a lot more serious, that is a relief!

Well ya'll I'm embarrassed to say dinner last night was a can of corn nuked with butter in the microwave. It's hmph, that time:headache: and with the stomach cramps nothing sounded good BUT that. Sometime's I thank God DH went back to traveling- so I can nuke if I feel like it and not have to feel guilty about fixing something for him.

Now that's high falute-n' haute cuisine there!:rotfl2:

Tonight I'll be better and fix something real, but not sure what yet.

Sorry you got the cramps, girlfriend! Hope u feel better & can eat something besides nuked corn!

Nancy - Sorry, I guess I'm so used to dealing with major illnesses with my parents, that I under-estimated how troublesome this will be.

Don't apologize Kathy. :grouphug: I a little embarrassed to say that we are glad that the Dr found something. In the great scheme of things this is not major because some kids with reflux are on feeding tubes, it is heartbreaking. If we know what is causing her pain we will avoid it. You are right about that. :thumbsup2 I think that after Marisa talks to the Dr he will be able to tell us what to avoid and what she can have. Milk is the second ingredient in the bread I have on hand. I think that she can have that though. I never thought about baked goods until DD said that we needed to look into it. Dr never really thought that eggs were the culprit so this was a surprise. He said it all looks quiet inside, but the blood tests show that there is an issue and now he wants to narrow it down. He was not going to quit until he found what her problem was.

Shovan- I hope that this old girl can learn some new tricks. I did not realize that kids outgrow these things. I hope that Kady can like your DD did.

Bead Pirate- I hope that you are feeling better, although any reason to nuke something and call it dinner is okay with me. I would have optrd for some crackers, cheese ans a glass or two of wine.

Marisa is going to discuss with the pedi. She wants to see about a pediatric allergist, especially about the eggs. They are in everything! Dr says that things like ice cream are not as bad because of the way they are processed. She wants to know if Dr wants Kady to avoid all things like cakes and cookies or waffles that may have egg.

Nancy, have your daughter insist on the allergy specialist. My son is allergic to eggs and for years the doctor said it was fine for him to have foods with eggs in them, since he wasn't reacting to them. He would break out in hives if he actually had eggs or things with eggs on them, like French toast, but there were no other symptoms.

A year and a half ago, we ended up in the ER because he had a reaction to shrimp. Then we got the allergist consult, and she couldn't believe the doctor had said it was okay for him to be eating things with eggs in it. If he had been off the eggs from when we knew he had reactions to them (about 18 months or so) then he would have outgrown the allergy by now. Now the allergist is hoping he'll outgrow it, but he is really on the cusp (he's 8 now, but was 6 when the shrimp thing happened). We also found out the eggs were causing his eczema -- no eczema once he was off eggs -- and he is considered pre-asthmatic. If he had continued eating eggs, he would likely be asthmatic by now.

I learned so much about allergies from that visit with the allergist. Liam has been off eggs ever since, and he has been doing much better...very little eczema, and especially this year, less chest issues.

Oh, and by the way, one of the things Liam reacted really strongly to (broke out in hives all over) was ice cream that had eggs in it. Eggs aren't in as many things as people think...dried pasta, most breads, most packaged cookies are okay. They do make eggless waffles (Van's) and there are recipes for eggless and dairyless cupcakes, cookies, brownies, etc that you can make. I can help if you need some of those recipes. The things to watch out for are hotdogs (most don't have eggs, but some do), fast food (definite no-no with allergies...they use egg as filler. Even McDonald's french fries, which the company long proclaimed were safe for everyone, including those with celiac disease, recently revealed the fries did have some gluten in them.), marinades, salad dressings, some chicken nuggets, some pizza places, and frosted cookies.

Sorry for the long post, but this is a subject I know a lot about. I can't tell you how angry I was when I found out that I had been sort of poisoning my son for four years. He ate waffles every morning, and the pediatrician said that was okay! (He doesn't have the same doctor now.) Ugh! I am mad thinking about it!

Hey sis, you did not say what you are having for dinner!! ;)

I am at the office waiting for DH to come pick me up. We drove in to the office today so we could haul all of our clutter out pre-vacation. I am just back from about 3 hours at the hair salon. I asked them to put in a couple of foils to blend out my gray and the stylist decided to basically dye my hair blonde! I was so mad! They put some color back in, but it is still pretty blond. I am mad, mad, mad!!!

Oh well. After all that stupid hair-related stress, I am definitely having DH take me out to dinner.

I just will have to keep telling myself vacation is coming. 42 hours until the beach!

My DD9 also outgrew(or so I think) her milk allergy. But you cannot really compare her since she was allergic B/F ALL and chemo and not afterward! We still watch her intake of dairy though! It could be due to her immune system being messed with so much! All I know is that b/f chemo, BAD eczema from milk allergy-during and after chemo, no more milk sensitivities, no more eczema:confused3

We are having something easy-since i am not feeling up to par-hamburgers seasoned with that grillmates onion and garlic or wine and garlic or something that we like by them and homecooked french fries and a salad!

Lori

I hope you have a great time, birthday girl!!!!!!!

Hey sis, you did not say what you are having for dinner!! ;)

I did but it was a few posts back...before my allergy rant. Sorry. We had burritos. I forgot to add the onions to mine, so it was a bit lacking. They are still sitting in my crockware.

As a teacher facing the last few weeks of school, my last three dinners have been veggies and hummus, cereal and low salt bologna on diet bread. I think I win most boring dinner!

I really just wanted to hop in and offer my hugs to Lindsay. I was going to post when I read your other thread, but I didn't get to it then. I am sure you could get your kitchen up to regulations, but I am afraid the initial investment would be a lot. If you are really committed and have a lot of support, and can afford it or are willing to take out a small business loan, it is worth it! You are obviously well organized, creative and a great cook!

If you're not sure, you might consider something like A Taste of Home or Pampered Chef where your cooking abilities are used to sell products. I know my friend makes a decent second income from Pampered Chef.

Check with a local culinary academy as well. It never hurts to ask.

Lots of luck!

I have seen this thread for a long time but tonight sat down to read through it - got to page 100 and realized there was no way I'd be able to accomplish that! So I skipped ahead a few hundred pages =)

Is the food/recipe thread still active or is it a clique conversation thread now? It's hard to tell and I don't want to step on toes coming in late to the game =)

I love to cook, rarely repeat a recipe, and am interested in posting here regularly if it's still going.

Thanks, Lindsay, for your ongoing work - I have already copied and pasted several recipes I found buried in the thread!

:welcome: Come on in and add you recipes to ours. We are a little chatty but that is because everyone talks over dinner. Some of us babble more than others, but I can't help it :confused3.

We discuss dinner, share recipes, jump in when someone needs a little support, and cheer when good things happen. Today I am going to ask for some advice on food allergies. My DGD seems to have two and as the chief cook in our family I am in over my head. Some of this group have dealt with them and can help me in providing a safe diet for her.

So please join in. BTW, I am only up to page 150 or so copying recipes into my file and I have had over a year.

liamsaunt- There is not much worse than a hairdresser run amuck! I hope dinner out helped, vacation dead ahead is good too!

liamandcailli- DD is planning on the allergist. She already called the GI Dr to see if she can remove the periactin because it seems to cause some behavior issues. and has been playing telephone tag with the pediatrician. He errs on the side of caution and while he was not happy that the lab decided "questionable" meant "negative", he feels that her symptoms after she got milk back confirmed that tit is an issue.

I appreciate all the help I can get here. Stopped dairy last night, and I will start checking the ingredients list on the other foods that she likes.

Dinner last night was really good. Chickens cooked over OJ an the grill, glazed with a mixture of marmalade, brown sugar, chili powder, salt and pepper; thinly sliced Yukon gold potato and onions layers seasoned with a lot of garlic, salt and pepper and olive oil, corn and green beans, and a salad of tomatoes, onions and cucumbers in Italian dressing. Tiramisu and brownies for dessert.

I have left overs in the fridge so we will finish those tonight.

Hi Aimeedyan! Welcome! :)

Lindsay, How are you doing? Been thinking about you. I hope things are starting to look up. Please keep us posted! :goodvibes

Tonight is pizza night! Yea! The cook is off!! :)

Morning all! We're having dinner over at our neighbor's tonight. So not quite sure what we'll be eating. But I'm taking dessert--gonna go easy tonight with the easy pudding pie.

Come join us Aimeedyan!! I look forward to sharing recipes with you!!!!!!!

My night off tonight - hopefully DH will get my fried green tomatoes. I'm taking DS to get his drivers license today - he's soooo excited and I'm soooo petrified.:scared1:

Tonight it's leftover vegetable soup and bread. After my awful and teary day yesterday, I need a day off :)

WFD at your house?

ETA: Thanks to all of you for your help. You have really helped me with your kind words and encouragement. In the end, I have decided to toss the idea. A number of people know about my idea and I think some kind of opportunity may show itself later on.

I did, however, check my area for cooking opportunities. No culinary school, no cooking classes, no catering openings, nothing. I've decided to just cook for free for awhile and see what happens :) You never know, a door may open somewhere.

They always do, Lindsay. You'll be ready when your door opens, and in the meantime :grouphug:.

Kathy- What an exciting day! Let us know how he does.

I just typed responses to alot of posts and deleted them!!! Anyway,

Nancy, hugs for Kady... .

Loris...the both of you...hope you feel better!

Aimee, Welcome...yes, we share recipes and life. I have to admit, I am one of the chatty ones...the babbling idiot, you can say.

Kathy, :yay: for Kyle getting his licence (sp)...I always spell that wrong!!! Maybe he can pick you up your fried tomatoes!!!

Lulu and Lindsay, Love the Pampered Chef and Taste of Home ideas. My cousin sells those partylite candles and mosting does internet sales through friends and fund raisers...her DS has HLHS, which is a heart defect...I guess what I am trying to say is, she works from home and at some halls like the VFW, etc.

Lindsay, don't give up hope. Keep thinking and talking about your idea and like you said...maybe it will turn into something. Let us be a sounding board...you know we love to chat!!! :)

Well, on to dinner. DS is supposed to have a baseball game but it looks like rain...we are having burgers and dogs on the grill...DF and I will have a salad and baked beans (no bread) and DS will have some mac and cheese. I really like this South Beach diet...if I could only stop drinking on the weekends!!!

Now, I have to go check out Kathy's post on Rosa Regale!!!

Have a great day!

Morning Y'all,

Dinner last night came out really delicious. But I took pics & now they are not on the camera!!!! Where did they go? It was so neat looking too! I fixed Emeril's Cheese Grits, put a breaded & pan-fried pork medallion on top, drizzled Kathy's Outback Sauce on the Grits & Pork & then piled the Sauteed Spinach on top! I wanted you guys to see it, I was impressed with myself.:sad2:

Anyway, I'm heading out to a Tea & Brunch at Alexis's school this morning. Probably pick up or go out for dinner!

Kathy, Was that a fabulous looking dessert with the Rosa, or WHAT!!:thumbsup2

Nancy, We had to be really strict with my DD's milk intake for years, she'd have vomiting, violent diarrhea & break out in rashes. Then when she was in school at about 7 or 8, I was attending a school party & turn around to see her eating ice cream! I freaked out, the teacher then tells me that Angelina told her she didn't have trouble anymore & it was okay! Well, it turned out that it was okay! I started letting her have small amounts of different products & no problems. So, I guess if you are careful at first, they may grow out of it!:goodvibes And it is much better to know what's causing the problems for Kady so that you can make it better!

liamsaunt, Sorry about the hairdresser! It really freaks me out when they just don't listen!

Lindsay, A door will open, don't be discouraged, just keep cooking!!!:thumbsup2

Have a good day y'all!
