Marisa is going to discuss with the pedi. She wants to see about a pediatric allergist, especially about the eggs. They are in everything! Dr says that things like ice cream are not as bad because of the way they are processed. She wants to know if Dr wants Kady to avoid all things like cakes and cookies or waffles that may have egg.
Nancy, have your daughter insist on the allergy specialist. My son is allergic to eggs and for years the doctor said it was fine for him to have foods with eggs in them, since he wasn't reacting to them. He would break out in hives if he actually had eggs or things with eggs on them, like French toast, but there were no other symptoms.
A year and a half ago, we ended up in the ER because he had a reaction to shrimp. Then we got the allergist consult, and she couldn't believe the doctor had said it was okay for him to be eating things with eggs in it. If he had been off the eggs from when we knew he had reactions to them (about 18 months or so) then he would have outgrown the allergy by now. Now the allergist is hoping he'll outgrow it, but he is really on the cusp (he's 8 now, but was 6 when the shrimp thing happened). We also found out the eggs were causing his eczema -- no eczema once he was off eggs -- and he is considered pre-asthmatic. If he had continued eating eggs, he would likely be asthmatic by now.
I learned so much about allergies from that visit with the allergist. Liam has been off eggs ever since, and he has been doing much better...very little eczema, and especially this year, less chest issues.
Oh, and by the way, one of the things Liam reacted really strongly to (broke out in hives all over) was ice cream that had eggs in it. Eggs aren't in as many things as people think...dried pasta, most breads, most packaged cookies are okay. They do make eggless waffles (Van's) and there are recipes for eggless and dairyless cupcakes, cookies, brownies, etc that you can make. I can help if you need some of those recipes. The things to watch out for are hotdogs (most don't have eggs, but some do), fast food (definite no-no with allergies...they use egg as filler. Even McDonald's french fries, which the company long proclaimed were safe for everyone, including those with celiac disease, recently revealed the fries did have some gluten in them.), marinades, salad dressings, some chicken nuggets, some pizza places, and frosted cookies.
Sorry for the long post, but this is a subject I know a lot about. I can't tell you how angry I was when I found out that I had been sort of poisoning my son for four years. He ate waffles every morning, and the pediatrician said that was okay! (He doesn't have the same doctor now.) Ugh! I am mad thinking about it!
