The MAGIC-al 12/03/05 Cruise - Trip Reports & Pictures Page 6*

Here's part 1 of my trip report. More to follow.

Just returned home to DC (and 38 degree weather with snow on the ground) from the 12/3/05 Western Magic. We really didn't want to leave. We had an absolutely wonderful time. So good, that we never did post while on board. So, here's my first attempt at a trip report. I tend to be verbose, so pardon me if this gets too long or had too much information. One other qualification before I begin. I was travelling with husband and my 23-month old son, so my experience is a little driven by my son's age and schedule. But, we also had the grandparents and my brother along, so I got some of their perspective as well.

Pre-cruise
The DISboard was great to help with the planning and preparation. And all the folks from the Cruise Meet/Chat that I've been talking with the past 10 months had loads of great information. The Passporter book helped as well. Birnbaum's book wasn't worth the money.

Night before - 12/02/05
We flew to Orlando the Friday afternoon before the cruise and stayed at the Airport Hyatt. We'd originally reserved the Embassy Suites near the airport, but I ended up getting three rooms at the Hyatt for $64/night each on priceline. It was so convenient. We have folks coming in from different cities at different times, and it was so easy just to meet up at the airport hotel. It was a bit confusing, though, because Disney puts up folks at the hotel the night before the cruise as well, so we had to be careful that our bags didn't end up going somewhere without us. We ate dinner in the hotel. The food was good, but the service was slow. The hotel had cribs available which was nice for my son, and they even included some nice baby toiletries that we ended up taking and using on the ship, including baby wash, a package of baby wipes, and some baby powder. My husband and I spend the evening before going to bed ironing transfers that we'd made at home onto t-shirts to wear the next morning celebrating our 10th anniversary cruise. It was a bit crowded in the bathroom with my husband and I and an ironing board, while my son slept in the bedroom, but I can't fault the hotel for that one!

Morning of cruise - 12/03/05
Here it is! The morning we've been looking forward to for 10 months since booking our cruise. I prebooked a van through FL Tours to take the seven of us to the port, picking up from the Hyatt and returning us to the airport after the cruise. For the seven of us, with a car seat for the toddler, and a 30 minute grocery stop, it was $200 RT, which was cheaper than the Disney transfers. The driver picked us up at 9:00 am as we'd requested, but we were all ready earlier, and could have gone with a 8:30am pickup. With all of the Disney bus passengers there at the hotel, we were anxious to get on the road before they left. The van was very comfortable, with leather seats, expanded head room, cup holders, and a power station where we could recharge my son's DVD player during the trip while he watched it, though we just about maxed out on the luggage room. Our driver down to the port that morning was very nice and pleasant. Even with a slightly delayed start to load all the luggage, and grocery stop to buy bottled water and other stuff, we were at the port before 10:30.

We had a bit of a wait at the entrance to the terminal to get into the building, with about 20 or so people ahead of us waiting for the terminal to open. Once it opened, we went in through security, got a number 2 boarding card at the bottom of the escalator (they said number 1 was reserved for handicapped folks) and headed up the escalator to check in. My in-laws, who were about 5-10 people behind us, were given a number 3 boarding card, so there were probably about 20-25 people who got the number 2 cards. After filling out the Bahamas form we got in line to check in. Since this was our first cruise, we got in the regular line, but only had a few families ahead of us so we didn't have to wait very long. During check-in, we were informed of the change from Nassau to Costa Maya. The Disney staff said they'd just found out about it that morning as well.

We were booked in a Category 4, but asked for and got an upgrade to a Category 3 room that was just fantastic. We ended up in room 8100, which is a handicapped Category 3 suite that only sleeps 4, but it was totally awesome and incredible. Words can't describe it, but it's completely spoiled us for any other type of room. As Greyfal Pat mentioned, the concierge staff was wonderful, and the perks (early boarding, welcome reception where you take care of all reservations, personalized itinerary, concierge receptions, priority reservations, in-room treats every day, personalized character schedules and other treats) were great. We were able to board the ship right at 11:45, and went straight to the Concierge reception. It was nice that they had the Spa and Children's program folks down there as well, so you could take care of everything at once. Even nicer, with the change in itinerary back to the original schedule, Disney had already flipped the nursery and spa reservations so they stayed on an at sea day if that's hoe you'd originally scheduled them.

After taking care of the concierge stuff, we headed to lunch at Topsiders since the rooms weren't available until about 1:30pm, and Parrot Cay was packed since it's on the same level where you get on the boat. Lunch was good, especially the shrimp and the bahama mamas, but not the beef stew. After lunch, we wandered around until the rooms opened up, then spent the next few hours enjoying our room and unpacking, while my son napped. While he slept, I stopped briefly by the DIS meet to see everyone. It was great to put names and faces together! (Thanks again for the custom M&Ms!)

Very exciting. Can't wait for more of your report. Congrats on your upgrage, sounds like you had a really good time so far.

Okay, I am wandering around my home wearing my Key To the World Card on my Lanyard
....but no one is serving me!
DH did bring me coffee in bed but when I asked 'where are my Eggs Benedict?' - he just laughed......

Will be back later for more updates.......

I want a suite on the ship....live there.

First of all, thanks for the great personalized M&M's. Very cool. Trying to figure out how to scrapbook them. Guess I'll just have to photograph them and eat them. ;)

My kids loved the fact they could check themselves in and out of the lab. Sometimes it got a little annoying trying to hunt them down. Lucky for me, they are good at checking in.

My DH (Jack) said that this will be our last Disney Cruise. He's ready to move on to another ship. I think it was MOnday night that we met up later in the evening and I asked what he has been up to. He replied "I was booking our next cruise!". HA! We are going in the summer of 2007, which will be sailing elsewhere. They are 99.9% sure they are going to port in Barcelona and sail to Italy, France and Greece. It will also be a bit longer cruise and probably on the Wonder. THey will do what they did with the Western Coast cruise by having a relocation cruise (my brain is tired...I can't remember what it's really called).

Jack and I signed up for the chipping golf thing and Jack loves to golf. I've done it twice. I technically won, but Keyons addition and subtraction got the best of him and he gave it to another person. Oh well. My son Kass got a golf ball and some tees for being the caddy. He was thrilled beyond belief. Keyon is a total hoot. Tell him "Dorothy" said Aloha!

My team lost the Pictionary game. I think it was fixed. ;) We did get a pin from Jake.

My crowning moment came when I walked in late to the trivia game and met up with fellow Disboard LURKERS (who shall only be known as SnL) and I joined their team. We won!! My kids were so proud of me.

Here's a hint on some future cruising stuff.....
1. Key West is pretty boring for most kids.
2. Don't miss the street preformers at dusk. Very cool! :cool1:
3. Go to Sea Grape Beach on Grand Cayman which is at the end of 7 Mile Beach. It's great, good snorkling, public restrooms, and they now have a bar with the typical rentals. We staked out a chunk of beach for us and it was so peaceful, I fell asleep and got mildly lobsterized. Don't get a taxi from the people hovering as you get off the ship.
4. Costa Maya....as it's been said before, go outside the guard gate and pick up a taxi. Not only will you miss the extreemely long lines, you will also save money. It's $2 per person to get you to the village and these are the same taxis that bring you back. The compound you are dumped into when you first get off the ship is overpriced for the most part. Hair braiding in the compound and the ship for Paris with long hair....$60. I paid $25 in the village and they did a great job. If you are looking for good jewelery, don't bother in the village. Taxis are waiting for you to go back to the cruise ship all the time. Make sure you get off the beaten path and go roam the streets where the locals live. I got some great photos back there of the "real" Mexico.
5.Check out the artist who does spray painting art. Simply amazing and only $20 per painting.
6. The pool there at the compound looks scary. Go to the beach instead!
7. Don't miss Pub Night on Friday on the ship. You will LOVE the antics!! :rotfl:

And lastly, I just have to give the whole crew a big high five for going beyond the call of duty on a few things....the best being they made me my cabbage lasagna that I had on the first cruise and it was delish! They now sell a cook book with recipes from the cruise. Grab it quick, they sell out fast! BTW...they make really good gingerbread as well!

Enjoy the new merchandise on CC. It's really great. I'm kicking myself for not getting a towel. Grrr!! Oh well! I did get the cute pin for the holidays. :earboy2:

I miss everyone (fellow cruisers and the CM's) already! Big hugs to all, happy holidays and please send a private message (lurkers SnL, I don't have your email addy anymore!) if you'd like to chat!
Aloha,
Kitty and gang :wave2:

Have a great day at Castaway Cay tomorrow.

On the Thanksgiving Magic cruise, a sand sculptor was finishing this right on the boat beach:

I would love to know if it is still there, or if they make a new one for each visit.

This looks like the same spot.....but no sculpture.

Here's the second installment of my trip report.

Saturday, continued

We unpacked until it was time for the mandatory drill. We got the 3 of us into the lifejackets and headed down to our assembly area, which ended up being in Animator's Palate. The drill was the only real negative part of the cruise for our group. The infant life vest is quite a contraption, with sleeves, hood and crotch strap. My son didn't seem to have any issues, but it must have made him too warm, especially when combined with the jostling as mom and dad struggled to carry him with our lifejackets keeping us from doing so easily, because he got sick on the way back to our room. My mother also had an issue with the life jacket being too restricting, and she had some trouble breathing at the end of the drill and had to take the jacket off before getting back to her room. Once we got rid of the lifejackets, everything else went well.

We stayed in the suite for the sail away celebration and had our own celebration on the verandah with the wine and petite fours provided in our group bon voyage package, and the desserts and fruit provided by the concierge staff. The nice thing about the large verandah is you can fit lots of people on it, and it even had a table to hold the wine and food. We were on the left side of the ship, so the view consisted of the Kennedy Space Center, highway, and the armed coast guard boat escorting us out of the port. Once we were out of the port, we had to get ready for dinner, since we were on the APL rotation and had 5:45pm dinner times each night. (I have mixed feelings about the dinner times. On one hand, 5:45 is my son's normal dinner time, so it worked well with his usual schedule. However, I don't think we ever actually made it to dinner before 6pm, since my son always seemed to nap late, and then it took a while to get him up and dressed for dinner, and catch the elevator down to the restaurant.)

Our first dinner was at Animator's Palate. We met our server, Leo, and asst. server, Oksana. They seemed to spend a lot of time at this first meal learning and asking about our preferences, and remembered them for the rest of the cruise, which was really nice. At each meal, they had a kids menu and crayons for my son, along with kid friendly cups of milk and water. We opted for the classic wine package, and had a bottle or two of wine at each meal which was nice. Throughout the week, the servers did a great job getting our food orders taken and out to us quickly, and also got my son his food earlier so he didn't have to sit around too long. Towards the end of the week, they started bringing out extra entrees and desserts, especially when someone seemed to be undecided between two options. We had great service throughout the cruise and really appreciated how hard they worked. Since my son still wasn't feeling well, my husband took him back to the room before any of his food arrived. Our server team was nice enough to send his dinner (and my son's) to our room so he could eat (though being in a concierge room he could have ordered the same meal from room service if needed).

We spent the rest of the night in our room, getting a good night's sleep, and getting used to the ship's butt wiggle since we were in the back of the ship. The rest of our family went to the welcome aboard variety show, and had great things to say about it the next morning.

Sunday, 12/4/05, Key West
Sunday morning we woke up and went to our character breakfast at Parrot Cay, though we arrived a bit late since my son seemed to sleep later than normal. We missed some of the characters, but still got pictures with Minnie, Dale, and Pluto. I'd been wondering how my son would react to the characters, but he didn't seem to have any problems, and even started hugging them, which I took to be a good sign that they didn't bother him. My husband and I had been scheduled to brunch with the group we booked with, but we cancelled that the night before when my son wasn't feeling well, leaving us time to wander around the ship a bit. The concierge staff hosted a welcome reception at 11 up on deck 10, so we went up there and had some drinks and appetizers until lunch time. It's a tremendous view from up on 10, but so sunny you definitely need sunglasses. Since we'd missed the brunch we'd planned, we asked the concierge staff about getting brunch reserved for Thursday, and they were able to arrange it for us. After the reception, we went to the lunch at Parrot Cay, which was Italian themed. The pasta table was wonderful, even though the chef was very fond of garlic and not afraid to use it. After lunch, my son took a nap, and my husband and I took turns wandering around the ship while he slept.

Around 3 or so, my son woke up and we headed out to Key West to wander around a bit. I have an addiction to David Yurman jewellery, so one of our stops was the Jewels store, which purports out to have the second largest David Yurman collection in the US. They did have the largest collection either of us had ever seen, and it turned into an expensive stop (I can't wait until Christmas!!). We'd originally talked about taking the train or tram around town, but it ended up being an easy walk around town, even when my son didn't want to be in his stroller. Our travels took us across a CVS store a few blocks from the dock, and we stopped in to get sun screen, bug repellent and batteries. It also seemed to be a popular stop for beer, water and other cruise accessories, judging by the other purchasers. We headed back to the ship to watch the sunset, stopping for conch fritters along the way. Back on board, we grabbed a seat outside Topsiders to watch the sunset. There were some clouds that kept it from being a perfect sunset, but it was still pretty nice. After the sunset, we had to hurry to get dressed for our 5:45 dinner in Parrot Cay. The BBQ ribs are as good as everyone said they would be. Definitely order them if you like BBQ at all. They were falling off the bone delicious!!!

After dinner we got some pictures taken, and then headed to the show. We were wondering how our little guy would do, since the show started after his usual bedtime, but he hung in there and even seemed to enjoy it. That show was a rock and roll comedian, and my husband and I are still singing "Pink pyjamas, penguins on the bottom" to the lion king theme. That night, I started my Shutters photo addiction, which turned out to be the downfall of our stateroom account (ouch!!) Definitely get the photo package if you plan to buy more than 5 or 10 of the different size pictures. With the package you can pick up your photos as they're taken, and trade photos in and out during the cruise as you get more photos. The lifestyles portraits were great, and the character photos were great too. (If you're on a budget, get the photographers to take pictures with your camera as well, and you should be able to same some money.)

Kass, my son, got a virus. It hit him like a ton of bricks around 10pm on Saturday. Everything was all peachy keen and then WHAM! Poor guy. It wouldn't be so bad, but he's diabetic and it's very hard to control his blood sugars. They have been through the roof. He was doing failry well on Sunday and then in the late afternoon, it struck again, full force. :crazy2:

On a happier note, I want to thank Pat for the pins for my kids. puckerup: Also, I'm not sure who gave us the magnet for our door, but it was perfect! Our kids were able to find our room easier. So thank you mystery person! Hey Pat, I haven't noticed that you mentioned that you FINALLY stepped foot into Studio Seas! That's still amazes me!

Does anyone know the name of the cheese from Palos brunch in the tin foil? It's a garlic and pepper spread cheese. I can't stop thinking about it!

Aloha,
Kitty :cat:

I think it might be called 'Boursin' from France. I just picked up a pkg for Christmas time - so it might be available in your grocery store, usually around the 'speciality cheese' section.

Disney Magic 12/3/05 Western – Pre-Cruise and Day 1
Cast of Characters…….
Hannosmom and Dad ::MinnieMo ::MickeyMo – Linda and Ed, their DD chichi honey Sarah princess: 23 and me – GrayFal :wizard: .

The Hannos drove down and arrived in Orlando on Tuesday. They picked me up from the airport on Wednesday and Thursday we went on a WDW Tour – Yuletide Fantasy. This was WONDERFUL – they took us ‘behind the scenes’ to the World Showcase at Epcot before it opened to the public, to MGM main street and Osborne Family Lights, the Grand Floridian & the unbelievable Gingerbread House that a person can walk into ....very cool !!!
b2304637.jpg
And WOW – the workshop where they make ALL the Christmas decorations for ALL the parks, hotels, shops, DTD and YES, The Magic, The Wonder & Castaway Cay. We then attended Mickey’s Very Merry Christmas Party and arrived back at the timeshare after midnight.
Friday was a day of rest…...and shopping at DTD :cool1:

Up early Saturday morning – we were on the road by 9:30 – and followed a DCL :boat: Bus to the Cruise Terminal…..
9ea66d86.jpg
As always, the first glimpse of the ship :boat: was Magic-al. Ed dropped us at the curb where we gave our bags to a porter, he parked the car and we were online to enter the terminal….we had gotten a call as we were entering the parking lot from cjsmom97 :cheer2: Jeanna about the change in the itinerary from Nassau to Costa Maya.

We were given group 7 to board….this was about 11:00 a.m. We went on the Castaway Club Line – it took us about 15 minutes to check-in – we mentioned we were interested in an upgrade and were escorted to another line where we obtained out Cat 3 room. We also told them about our non-refundable paid in full reservation at Atlantis in Nassau – they took our info and said they would see what they could do.
By this time, it was 11:45 – we boarded (as we were now in Group 1) and went to Parrot Cay for lunch – yummy!

About 12:30 we arrives at Sessions Lounge to meet with our Concierge team, Sonja & Dania – they were also training Arnaldo this week. Sonja reviewed all our reservations for excursions, tastings & PALO.

Concierge Sonja & a VERY Happy Pat

We had made some reservations before boarding thru the DCL website but changed and added some others.
There was also a representative from the spa there.
We stayed at Sessions until 1:30 and then went to our suite.
8046 - It was quite spacious with 2 full baths – one with a shower as you entered the suite and a second one in the bedroom with a large, double sink, Jacuzzi tub and separate room for the shower and toilet.
There is also a large walk-in closet with a vanity table and mirror opposite it. There is a queen size bed and a twin Murphy bed. There is a double balcony with 4 chairs with pads. The living area has a sofa bed and 2 chairs, a dinning table for 4 and a buffet.
There is also a kitchenette area with a sink and ‘'cooler' ….all and all, very comfortable.

We had our Welcome Aboard gift from Chicago AAA Kim – 2 bottles of Champagne and fruit….we had a toast to our good fortune and then off to the DIS Meet at 3pm in the Promenade Lounge. It was great to put the faces to the names….we chatted and Hannosmom Linda handed out custom M&M’s that said “Magic 12/3/05” on them…. a big hit with all ! I was chatting with moochinkassarole Kitty – and her DD and DS wanted to trade pins….as I was wearing my ‘favs’ I asked them who they liked and told them I would do my best to come up with some for them in a few days. Ed took a group picture and then we were off and running …… back to our suite and prepared for our favorite activity … Life Boat Drill. We decided to go early so had a chance to chat with the crew…did I forget to mention that everyone was soooooo nice!

Ed, Linda & Sarah at Life Boat Drill.

We returned our Life Vests to the room and hurried up to the Sailaway Party at 4:30…We mentioned to our cabin steward, the Lovely Nicole from Jamaica, that we had been in 2 different cabins and could she help locate our luggage…
The Jumbotron is GREAT- no matter where you are standing, you can see the whole show…at 5 pm we left the dock ...
I love to hear the ships horn “When You Wish Upon A Star…"

Great report Pat! Can't wait to read the rest!!! We were thinking about asking for an upgrade too. Was it worth it? Even with the murphy bed in the room with you?

Wow!! 2 upgraded to Cat 3 at the port in one trip?!?! I could only wish!! Could I ask what catagory you had previously and what was the cost to upgrade?

Yes, I have to say I enjoyed the "C" Class suite.....Linda and Ed took the Queen Bed in the bedroom and their DD Sarah slept on the Murphy Bed in the bedroom with them...I slept in the 'nest' in the living room - so named because the sofa bed had 2 eggcrates on it!
To be honest, this would not have worked if we were 2 couples - who wants to get stuck on a sleeper sofa for a week???? Originally, we had booked a Cat 6 with a Cat 11 right across the hall - so we would have had 1 verandah, 2 baths and 2 rooms and 4 twin beds and 2 sleep sofas....and more privacy for all....BUT - we did take advantage of several services that only "C" has to offer....would I do it again if it was just DH and me....YUP!

Thanks so much for posting pictures from inside the staterooms (and suites). That's one of the things I've been most interested in - and was interested in when planning and deciding what category we wanted to book. It's the details like being able to get a feel for the set-up of the rooms, etc. that make a difference for me!

I'm enjoying reading about y'all's trip.

 Hi Patti! It's so much fun reliving our vacation! I've spent the whole day unpacking and putting stuff away, and you know how much stuff there was!!!
Can't wait to see the rest of the report. I will chime in when you get to Costa Maya.

Miss you mucho!!!

Forgot to mention, I was sitting in bed this am, drinking my coffee, and looking at the chaos all around with some serious dismay. I asked Ed to please send the maid in (joking, of course, in real life I am the maid) and he said ok, I'll put the hang tag on the front door. :rotfl: Do we miss the ship or what???

First day back at work and I'm very tired. We had a late flight home, tied up in Atlanta. Arrived in Moline 11:30 p.m. and Cedar Rapids at home by 1:30 a.m. I hated having to get up and make coffee, no groceries in the house but a very loving doggie that has not left my side. :dog2:

The trip was fantastic. I would have never believed it. We found our favorite hideaway. Early mornings were beautiful, but the rocking of the boat on Thursday was nasty.

More later.
