texting during a test

I have no idea and I'm not a teacher. But if I was in charge, they would get a zero.

I'm in college and we would absolutely fail that test and be kicked out of class for the day, receiving no attendance or homework points either. In high school, the phone would have been confisgated and again, fail the exam. The principal would talk with the parents of the child before the child could get the phone back.

Zero on the test. Students is written on referral and 1st offense is mandatory morning detention. Phone is taken and parent must come in and sign to pick up phone.

If it is during a state mandated test the student's test is not scored. This Would have a major affect on the classes he/she would be placed in the following year if the student's proficiency in an area is questionable.

I removed a test from a student today for this and gave her a zero and am being told to back peddle on it. I"m only a student teacher so I will. Sucks though.

We just recently had a faculty meeting discussion about this because our state testing is coming up and there is a concern with cell phones. The administration wants all cell phones collected in the morning, have teachers check to make sure they are off and then handed back to students after the tests are collected. We put up a stink about that one because first of all, no one wants to be responsible for a class full of cell phones. Second, we don't believe that kids will willingly hand over their phones.

If a phone rings, is found on, etc. during the test we have to fill out an irregularity report and it has to be reported to the state. Not a good thing.

That sucks. You shouldn't have to do that. :sad2:

ETA: Don't ever work at that school! What kind of example are they setting? Sheesh!

That's unfortunate because they are not teaching the student responsiblity. Sometimes a student needs to fail in order to succeed.

Is this a firm request/demand or can you argue it?

I could argue it. I'm not sure I want to. I wish my cooperating teacher had taken a firm line on it. The problem is that I would also have to address two other students who were cheating and those are a little less black and white.

High School:

I think the progression is 1st offense after school detention

2nd offense Saturday detention (full day)

It is well published policy that everything electronic --headphones, phones, ipods, etc... needs to be put away in locker before school. It is well published all over the school, on the website, in student guide, etc...

All teachers need to adhere to the policy. I'm not saying all do though..

The student SHOULD receive a zero on the test and a negative comment on the next report card.

As a student teacher, you have no recourse. You have to do what your cooperating teacher says -- it is ultimately his or her class -- even though I think you're in the right. You can express your thoughts on the subject ONCE, then you have to do what you're told. That's the reality of the situation. You need that teacher's recommendation, and you need the school's approval to get your teaching license.

However, I would hate to be the teacher who has to continue in that classroom 'til June with students who KNOW that they can cheat and nothing'll happen.

He runs a tight ship. I believe he feels that on his own this wouldn't happen. He is quite surprised the kids did this. I kind of think they probably do it all of the time. He normally grades papers during the test. I wouldn't have seen it if somebody hadn't done something that caught my eye. Then I became hyper vigilant.

What would happen at your kids schools?

Honestly, I'm not sure what would happen... I think they'd get their phone taken away, and probably lose points and detention.....

But....I think they deserve a ZERO

Hmmmmm...
One of the things that teachers are supposed to do is be aware of school and district policies and enforce them. It sounds as if you did, and are now being asked to look the other way.

It seems as if you're in a tough position. Perhaps you could ask the regular teacher/principal to go over the policy on the use of electronic devices during a test and to give you "guidance" on what you should have done instead. :confused3 :rolleyes1

And, like many other poster, I agree, the student should have gotten a zero or other penalty.

Huh--I think a zero on the test is very lenient. In my college, you would fail the class, and probably be expelled

zero for the paper.

with the HSC (thats the really big exam at the end of yr12) if you have a mobile phone or even a programable watch in the room, you failevery exam and have to repeat.

In other words no one wants to be responsible:rolleyes1

I really don't know. I'd assume they would have their phone taken away (that is the rule for just having their phone turned on in school - parents can come pick it up later), they'd get a zero for the test, and would be sent to the safe room. Beyond that, I have no idea.
