Question...

Missing school - how many days are too many?
Funny you should ask that question today, our schools have always had a 10 day policy but you must get permission and it must be for a family holiday etc etc well we get a letter today saying the government has changed the policy and parents could now get fined for taking their kids out of school  I don't know about you but our holidays are at least double the price in the school holidays which is just so unfair!

The really great memory was later that night after we ran back to the hotel, my cousin and I decide our Moms needed to go to bed. We put each of our Moms to bed and meet back up in the hallway to go to the hotel bar. We are halfway to the elevator when all of a sudden I hear "you who girls" and there is my Mom in her nightgown doing the can can in the hallway.
:rotfl2: I meant to ask did you get away with the carafe? :rotfl2:

Question...

Missing school - how many days are too many?

My DS's school has no official policy, so I'm just wondering what the norm is. He's starting Kindergarten this fall and I'll be pulling him:
1 day in Aug.
5 days in Dec.
2 days in Jan.

for vacation/long weekends. Of course, we can add a few days on to that for illness, too. So, I'm looking at 10-11 days missed for the year. I'd really, really like to add one more day in Aug.... am I pushing it?! :rotfl: How do official rules where you live compare?

Thanks guys!
kids are only kids 1 time and they will be attending school enough in the years to come. If you were"breaking the rules" with too many unexcused absences than thats one thing,I'm not about breaking the rules, but if the school has no "official" policy on absences then I would take him out and not worry. Im sure they will be more than willing to give you the work/lessons Leo will be missing(my school is)
We have 20 unexcused absences for the year, which is very liberal. We also get excused absences with Dr's notes.
DS5 will start Kindergarten in Sept also. Here in our town in we have 1/2 day sessions and it is FULL BOAT for these kids. NO DOWN TIME AT ALL.

Similar here---you can get a truancy fine as a parent if you go over the 5 ("no doctor note" ) days. I personally make it a point to get my kids to the doctor when they are sick so it will not count against my days. Plus the student is in danger of being held back if attendance days exceed 10.

Now that high school is approaching--the rule is if they miss under 5 classes for the semester (for ANY reason--doctor/dentist, trip, get out early...) and they have at least a B average, then they do not have to sit for the exams. So, AE has already said she does not want to miss many days.
They count each period separately too--so you could miss 3 days of English and 6 of History and would have to take the History exam.

So, my usual plan of taking them out at the 10 am attendance bell is ruined!:headache:

Coming from a Home schooler.....you guys can get an intent to Home school letter from your school district....fill it out & state only for 20day a year as an example...then turn in a attendance report to the school district for the days you have them out & they have to count them as present with No Penalties....as this is a Federal Law all school districts have to follow (not Private) you can call it a field trip or whatever you want as long as you spend 1&1/2 hrs teaching them something that day......there are no requirements to prove this just to report!!!!
:thumbsup2

::yes:: There's no way I could even afford a vacation outside of FL in the summer, and the only place I want to be in summer is OUT of FL! :rotfl:

This is so interesting - thanks Disneydad! My DS's school is private, but this is good to use as a support argument. We actually do at least 1.5 hours a day on learning at WDW, between asking colors, learning about money, counting, telling time, etc. :thumbsup2

And... CHECK THIS OUT:

I just looked at next year's school calendar... they have NO BREAKS, other than summer and 2 days for Thanksgiving! :scared1: No Spring break. No Winter break. Closed 12/24-25 and 12/31-1/1, but that's it. And, his class starts a full 2 weeks earlier than the 1st-4th graders. So I'm not feeling bad at all about pulling him for the planned 8 days now! Still thinking about adding 2...

OK, several years ago Mom, my aunt and one of my cousins went to Europe, our first stop was Paris. That first night we went down one side of the street and back up hitting every side walk café and having drinks at each one.:drinking1 At the last one we decided to have dinner and Mom liked the carafe that the wine came in and offered to buy it. (for the record I thought it was ugly, but she was sloshed and thought it was pretty:confused3 ) They said no. Well, Mom didn’t like that answer soooo after we proceeded to empty it, my cousin put it in her bag. :rolleyes1 The waiter comes back and notices the carafe is missing. We play all dumb, like oh the bus boy must have taken it. The waiter gets the owner of the place who proceeded to yell at us in a mix of English and French, finally chasing us through the place yelling at what I am sure were French profanities and calling us crazy Americans. My Aunt who was beyond drunk starts pleading with them not to throw us in the Bastille.:lmao:

Definitely one of my family’s prouder moments.
That's a great story, Mo! Sounds like something my mom would TOTALLY do. :rotfl:
Oh and it's pronounced Dissssssssss :rotfl:
I agree with you there, Jo. DISSSSSSSSS! :goodvibes

You're a secret pole dancer!!
I didn't know it was a secret! :ssst:

We have no "official rules" here for public school. I think for Kinder, it's really up to the parent(s). I highly doubt missing 10 days this year is going to affect him in any way. Now with Maddie previously being in private school, they never blinked an eye at how many days she missed. I guess as long as they got their full tuition, they were happy!

I'm just wondering if anyone has noticed my TFW siggie?

How is it??!!  I'll admit, I've not yet read any of the books, only seen the movies. Are you willing to PM me with how it comes out for Harry? (This assumes it's not front page in our Sunday paper, of course.) I promise not to share!
