We just got back from a week at the Swan.

We used the teachers discount for a lake view for 159 and we are also starwood members.

The hotel was packed with conferences and with early spring breakers.

We arrived at 11 a.m. and were told our room was not ready. We gave them a credit card swipe and went to the parks. When we returned after Epcot Tapestry of Dreams it took the front desk a looong time and many keyboard clicks to find us a room. They ended up putting us in 212 on the east side. The view was bad, but the real problem was the location on a service hallway where the conference services offices are (dark, extra fire door, and looking like you made a wrong turn), the missing arm chair and the terrible beds. The next day they switched us to 511 which was a vast improvement. They promised to leave a message about any room change, but I had to go to the desk to find out, and then re-pack quickly because they wanted to turn 212 around.

Unfortunately on the second last night we got new neighbors who talked and laughed till 2 a.m. despite four calls to the fron desk. The next morning we smelled cigarette smoke. When I called the front desk they offered to spray our room but said they could do nothing about people smoking on a non-smoking floor.

I decided to visit the front desk and try to ensure a good last night. They offered to move me down a floor but could not promise smoke free (sounded like room roulette and not worth another room change). Gaylord (the desk clerk) told me that the FL state law did not allow hotels to enforce smoking rules, only noise rules. And that new guests were informed after the room was assigned that it was a non smoking room. He did offer to do more than spray the room and offered to shampoo the room instead which seemed to help.

I was disappointed in the quality of the rooms and beds they had us in and the inability to resolve problems over the phone. I ended up at the front desk four times during the stay to either resolve problems or try to get an update.

My problems all seem to be with the front desk. The concierges did great as did the bell staff. It seemed that the hotel had just over booked and could not provide the quality of service they traditionally provide.

We will not return to the Swan and I'll write Starwoods as well.

Sorry to here you had problems, we are currently staying at the Dolphin and yes it is busy. But being here during spring break we expect crowds everywhere.

I've not experienced any of the troubles you decribed here though - sure sorry you did.

I hope you found many good things while you were here at the world also...

We have been having a blast!

Trekker-

The parks were great, I just got stressed by the tought of dealing with more hotel issues.

We'll go again, just probably stay at AKL.

AKL is such a beautiful resort - I want to try that sometime also!

We also had a BAD experience at the Swan and would never go back again.
Maybe the Dolphin is different but we were very disappointed in our stay last fall.
Our rooms were awful and the rooms were sloppy and beds were horrible.
We'll never stay there again.

I'm sorry you had such a bad experience at the Swan.

My family stayed there over Christmas and New Years (which is a very busy time!) and had absolutely no complaints. All 3 of our rooms were wonderful (we were upgraded from a standard to beautiful lake views), didn't hear a peep from any other room, and ever staff member we dealt with was wonderful.

I hope wherever you stay next time will be up to your standards.

I'm surprised also by your experience. We stayed at the Swan 3 weeks ago, on the Club level, room 1212 (so probably had the same view, back of Boardwalk) the view didn't bother us one bit, but since we were up higher we could also see MGM. The beds were great (maybe they had been upgraded). We also didn't hear a peep or experience any smokers. We thought the Swan was very nice and plan to return.

It's funny how people can have such different experiences at the same Hotel. Switching rooms is a royal pain. Too bad they didn't upgrade you to a suite for your trouble, which is what, IMO, they should have done.

I am sorry to hear this. It is funny how different folks can have different experiences. I have stayed at the Swan twice and found it wonderful and had the front desk bend over backwards for us. Of course I have read raves about other Disney Resorts, stayed at one of the most expensive of them and was put right next to the dumpster while paying a concierge rate:confused: I hope your next trip out is more enjoyable. :)

I am sorry you had a bad experience at the Swan it is by far my favorite between the two hotels. What some of the posters above is true, different folks can feel completely different about the same experience. I think that you should write a letter about your experience, it is good for them to know what your experience was. Sorry you had a bad experience.

I agree with glo and Patrick.

I've only stayed at the WDW Dolphin Resort once and I plan on staying over two weeks this December, and I had a wonderul time.

I know that the management, those in charge of quality control, are always looking for ways to improve service.

After all, they depend on word of mouth positive advertising.

I too, would like to stay at the AKL, someday.

Ray :)

Etail, I am sorry you didn't have the best of experiences. Sometimes those things happen, but with your letter. hopefully they won't happen to another guest.

I've been meaning to post for over a month regarding our stay at the Dolphin over President's Day weekend. I can honestly say these were the MOST uncomfortable beds I've ever experienced. They were so hard(not just firm) that I could hardly get to sleep. I woke up feeling like I had slept on the ground, very stiff and achey. The next morning I called the front desk and asked if they could give me an extra mattress pad when they made up the room. She said housekeeping would take care of it. I said," I guess I should have requested a room with the heavenly beds." She told me none of the rooms have them and won't until next year's renovations are done. This conflicts with reports I've read here. Needless to say when we got back to the room late that night nothing had been done to improve the bed. We were too tired to deal with it so I took matters into my own hands. I folded up the bedspread to the width of a sleeping bag and put it between the mattress and the bottom sheet. This helped enough to give me a better night's sleep.
I was sharing the bed with my 15 yr. old niece who could sleep on a bed of nails , hence I only needed to "fix" my side of the bed. I was only there 2 nights or I would have pursued the issue. I definately will not return until I'm sure the beds are upgraded.
I should probably add that I have a perfectly healthy back and am not one to be overly fussy about mattresses. These really were horrible beds.

Etail...So sorry to read about all your troubles at the Swan. The management definitely seemed to "fall short" of the mark, and should have offered you a room at the Dolphin (if nothing quiet, better, etc. was available at the Swan). These properties are under the same ownership, making a switch easy. I am sorry this alternative was not offered to you. We Prefer and LOVE the Dolphin, and have stayed during some of the busiest times w/conferences galore! BUT...have always enjoyed peace and quiet, and a smoke-free environment! (FLA still has to play catch-up in the smoking dept.! Cali is ALL SMOKE-FREE!!) I am glad you are writing Starwood. It is imperative they are made aware of situations like this. Please list the names, dates and all pertinent info (as you did in your post) for them to reference. Hope it is resolved in a timely and satisfactory manner.

**SO GLAD to see you are "LIVING LA VIDA LOCA" in WDW & DOLPHIN Trekker!! (Having A BLAST!) It seems like just yesterday you were there! Is it your new "Home away from home?" (My motto!). :D

GatorKate, that's too bad you had such a problem with the Dolphin beds!! We thought they were the best hotel beds we had ever slept in and we've been to many hotels!! Of course we did so much running around during the day at WDW, we probably would have fallen asleep on the floor no problem!!!!;) :D

Etail, that would have really bothered me about the cigarette smell. I would definetly e-mail someone about that!! Sorry you had such an unpleasant experience at the Swan.:(

Oh, how horrible for you. Unfortunately, since the Swan is neither owned, nor operated by WDW and is only sitting on their property, the hospitality may not be of a level that you would come to expect from another Disney owned and operated resort. Still, if Starwood expects to compete with all of the Disney resorts, they need to show their guests the same respect. I too, would get in touch with their main offices and make your complaints known. Only then can they proceed to remedy the situation. Regardless of how busy the resort was, there is no excuse for the treatment you received. Good luck, and hope your next vacation at the World is far better!

Well, eeyore, the same set of circumstances has happened at a "real:rolleyes: " Disney hotel...a regular poster here, I think it was Blondie, had a problem with smokers in a non-smoking building at the Poly, and that resort also said there was nothing they could do. If memory serves, they moved her from Tokelau to the building nearer the GCH, and although she was happy enough with her new room, the original room was nicer. Noisy, inconsiderate people stay at Disney owned hotels too:eek:. It seems the biggest problem is with the Florida law and the inability of ANY hotel to enforce anti-smoking room designations.

Thanks to everyone for all the comments.

Alas, all too often resort staff think folks are just trying to angle a free upgrade on the rooms. Perhaps that was the impression the Swan staff had. I really just wanted a restful hotel room, which the beds, noise and smoke could not accomodate.

I've e-mailed Starwoods as well as the Swan. They promise a 10 day turn around. I'll let you all know how it ends.
