Super Goofs moving into May

Lisa, my DH has started training for sprint triathlons and may even work his way up to an Olympic distance in the near future. He's also going to do the WDW Half. If he's interested in posting his miles/minutes, can he replace one of our inactives? Good luck with your busy weekend. Our DD has her first softball tournament (gee, can you identify with that? ;)), so it looks like we'll be busy too.

Rich, enjoy your new shoes. The last time I switched to a new pair, I was speedy (for me) too. It made me feel like a little kid: "I have new shoes, so that means I can run super-fast!" And yes, I wore the new shoes out of the store that day. Do we ever really outgrow that? Good luck with your races!

Maura, sorry to hear about the car and your project at work. Just count down the hours 'til Memorial Day weekend!

I have "just" a 5K at the Birmingham zoo this weekend. My last two races were 8Ks, so I'm hopeful that I will be surprised to see the finish line so soon. I went to pick up my race packet on Tuesday night and was really ticked that I made a special trip out there. The "packet" consisted of a shirt, a bib number, a bracelet to get into the zoo, and 4 safety pins. That's it. Not even a plastic bag to put it in. Definitely one of those times that it would have been best to wait until the morning of the race. Oh well.

Ok, I'm one of the guilty ones :rolleyes1...Promise to try to be here more and remember to update the sheet.

Maura - glad DS is ok but that is a bummer on the car. Have you been using a particular program for the swimming? Gotta get mine in gear.

Cecelia - Those are definitely two terrible tragedies. Be sure to take time for yourself in all this as well.

Lisa - :banana::banana::hug::hug:

Mike - how you doing?

Hello to all the Goofs!!

Not much going on here this week. Just haven't been feeling the love. Have a 5K at the zoo tomorrow then 15 mile bike for ACS Sunday. Hoping that'll get me moving again.

Next week I fly to NY right after work Wed, back Friday. Yep, another whirlwind trip.

Have a great weekend and I'll try to check back in Sat after the event.

Hi Everyone!

Ahh its a beautiful day! I cannot believe they are predicting 70% chance of rain for the weekend, don't they know its Tournament Time???!!!! All three kids made their tournaments this season so it could be a wild wild weekend. If it doesn't rain!

Thanks for all the kind words everyone. Like I said, most of the time I get more than I give.
Kim - Yes, I am required to go to peer counseling every other week. I will get a good long time at the bottom of the call list now.

I'm getting two miles in every other day or so, but they're slow miles and my legs feel tired all the time. I think I'm going to start taking a multivitamin again and see if that helps.

As for the legs, I know what you mean. There was almost no spring here in the south so it could just be acclimating to the sudden heat. Make sure you are increasing your water intake to deal with the heat. If I don't hydrate well the day before a run, my legs feel it the next day. Also be sure to stretch after you run incase you are building up lactic acid in your legs.

Take care everyone!
Cecilia

Hi, Goofs! I'm sending you a new teammate, Sk8tingMom. She's been posting on the weekly thread and now wants to join a team. She's also a triathlete, so I thought you'd be able to help her with training and encouragement! :goodvibes

I wish I had more time to chat with all of you, but not these days. Know that I think of you all more than you know. And a special shout-out to Cecelia: you're in my thoughts and I admire you for all that you give of yourself.

I'll probably do a longer race report later, but for now, here's the short version of the good, the bad and the ugly.

The good - I held a fairly consistent pace between the two races, so my 10k time (per mile) was essentially the same as my 5k time.

The bad - I held a fairly consistent pace etc. My pace just never got to where it should have been, so neither race was anywhere close to a PR.

The ugly - I actually had to stop for a coughing fit during the 10k. That's never a good sign.

I didn't place in my age group, though I originally had hopes to do so in the 10k, but today things just didn't gel. I could make all sorts of excuses, but the reality is that I just didn't race well today. It happens, and I know that I did as well as I could this morning.

(For the record: 10k time 43:49, 5k time 21:38)

Thanks for the advice, Cecilia. I haven't been paying much attention to my hydration since these are such short training runs, so that's probably the cause. I'll be a better drinker from now on, promise!

Liz, how was your zoo 5K today? Mine was disappointing. Very muggy conditions, and they were out of cups at 3/5 of the water stops. I finished after approximately 75% of the pack, and there was no Powerade left in the refreshments area; just warm Dasani. Chik-Fil-A sponsored the food so I was able to grab a chicken biscuit, but they had run out of fruit cups. I'm thinking my $30 entry fee was much too high.

Rich, sorry to hear about your coughing fit. Does it make you feel any better to know that your 10K time was very close to my 5K time? I finished around 39:45 or so. (Forgot to turn off the Garmin, as usual.)

Finally, welcome to Sk8tingMom!

Sk8tingMom WELCOME WELCOME WELCOME!!!!!

Steve (For the record: 10k time 43:49, 5k time 21:38) :worship:

WOW. lighting fast.

Cecelia: Hats off to you lady; I don't know how you do it. We'll say some prayers at Mike's lair for those folks...

Maura sorry to hear about the car, but glad you are getting into training!

Everyone else :cheer2::yay::woohoo::headache::hug::thumbsup2 as needed!

Mike's Lair Super stupid busy, between work, training, spouse, kids. i don't know how ANYONE fits it all in...my days start at 0400 and end around midnight, and I still don't get it all done.

Now that the whining is out of the way, I've been fairly consistent with the training times, but if I weasel out of any workout, its likely to be the swim...I haven't been in the pool in a week (although in my defense, I haven't been able to breathe very well from this junky chest thing I had going).

Anyone have any mental tricks or mantras they use to motivate themselves when they REALLLLLLY don't want to be out there?

I will keep reminding myself to HTHU...(Harden The H*** UP).

Another no sympathy reminder I use is that how can I expect anyone to feel sorry for me, when I'm doing such a great job of it myself?!?

Happy Sunday, everyone. Just got back from the gym where I did a 2-fer (since I did an 0-fer yesterday!) Somehow, I always feel tired on Saturday, and am highly likely to blow off a workout. So swim and run today, which went well since the swim was short.

Liz Somewhere last year I xeroxed a tri plan out of a book at the library and have been using it. It has two swim workouts a week, with a combination of warmup/cooldown, drills and intervals. Let's just say--I do the best I can with the limtied skills I have.

Mike Self-bribery works for me sometime when the motivation is flagging. Especially for food, hot shower, or some total down time! (Okay, the last one seems counterintuitive, but it works)

Rich Thanks for reminding us that not every race is a PR and that you need to take away something positive from each.

Now it's time to finish my chocolate milk and fruit salad.

Maura

I really didn't want to do it, but I sucked it up and did my "long" run (only 4 miles on the schedule this week) this afternoon. I was tempted to just call yesterday's 5K a long run, but my endurance isn't where it needs to be, so I figured I'd better log the miles. I was slow and fairly steady (a 5:1 run/walk ratio), and the IT band didn't really bug me until 3.3 miles. I actually felt the endorphins kick in today, so I'm glad I hit the treadmill after all. Now off to do some stretching...

Greetings teammates! Thank you for the warm welcome.
I come bearing miles and minutes. :) Do I start counting now, or include all of my May work outs? Life has been getting in the way this month - 3 trips so far - but I've been able to work out a bit.

Run total: 9 miles, 2:08:33 (week 5 of couch to 5K)
Bike total: 10 miles, 45 minutes
X-train: 120 minutes hockey

As you can see, I'm slow, but determined. I've always been reasonably athletic, but a terrible runner.

I am looking forward to getting to know my fellow Goofs, so I guess I'll start by telling you a little about me. I'm a mom and a skater (did you guess?). My boys are 10 and 9 this week. DS10 runs a 7:15 mile! Obviously, he gets that from his dad. Both of my monkeys are hard core hockey players, so travel hockey teams consume most of our lives. I play in a women's league & DH plays whenever he can fit a pick-up game into his schedule. Almost twenty years (and pounds!) ago, I was a competitive figure skater, thus the screen name. When I'm not chasing my family around in circles, I'm a non-profit exec and professional fundraiser (no, I'm not the person who calls you during dinner!)

Anyway, we try to make work-outs family things. DSs both ran their first tri last summer, DS10 and I are running one together in June. My DH finished the last 2 WDW Marathons and is going Goofy this year. Actually, I think he will be Dopey. DS10 wants to run the Family 5K with him.

As for me? I've finished 3 sprint tris and the Expedition Everest Challenge. My plans for this summer/fall are the craziest yet - 2 sprint tris, The Nation's Triathlon (1.5K, 40K, 10K), Expedition Everest Challenge 2 weeks later, and the WDW 1/2 Marathon. I'm going to need all of the support and encouragement I can get. :thumbsup2 Thanks for havin' me.

:stitch: 'Ohana Monday Mixer :stitch:

"A good film is when the price of the dinner, the theatre admission and the babysitter were worth it." ~Alfred Hitchcock

By now, most of you have figured out I like movies. A lot. Perhaps an unhealthy amount. Nevertheless, I think it's fun to talk about movies, especially now that the summer season has started. Wolverine has been released, so has Star Trek, with many more big blockbusters soon to come.

So this week's mixer topic is, predictably enough, summer movies! The start of the mixer, posted on the 'Ohana thread, is here.

What summer movies are you looking most forward to, and why? Also, how do you like your summer movies?

Feel free to talk about how you choose your flicks: based on directors, your favorite movie star, a beloved genre? And what is your ideal movie experience? Midnight movies or matinees? Chain theaters or independents? Drive-ins? What about the movie-going extras? With or without snacks? Buttered popcorn or chocolate?

Happy Monday everyone!!

I did not much of anything this weekend besides plant my garden. All that raking, digging and bent over planting took its toll on my back but...it is done, done, done and I only have set outs which are easy peasy. We had shut down the boiler but the coldy cold temps here have forced us to restart it! Frost/freeze warnings for the next few nights. Perfect, just planted the garden and they give me that load...

Today is a run planned but if it starts raining, I am going to hit the gym. DD14 may have a doubleheader tomorrow afternoon and I will plan accordingly. Another doubleheader on Thursday. Two in one week is a bit much if you ask me but, then again, they didn't! :lmao:

Welcome, welcome to Sk8ting mom! We can use your miles. When Mikey the Wonderful grants you access you can post anything you have from May and continue from there. Races count as double miles but we do not double minutes. Also anything that you do like push mow your lawn, play basketball with the kids, etcetera counts as exercise. Housework does not  I still don't agree with that one.

Mikes lair, I like it, all sinister and stuff...:upsidedow

When I don't feel the love for getting out there I just tell myself to do 1 mile and then I can quit or walk and I usually feel better after that first mile and just continue on. Hence, I talk to myself a lot :rolleyes1

Kim, great job for getting out there when you don't feel the love.

Rich, I hate to say this but, you sound WAY too much like me and the coughing fit. It means pneumonia for me. Maybe you should get checked. I do this EVERY year and I know better...:sad2: Don't let it go too far or you will get my speech that I get every year about how I am the kind of person they worry most about...:scared:

Liz, how was the 5K???

Everyone else:

I hope everyone's weekend was awesome and that you packed in all you could. I know I always do...:goodvibes

Hi all.

I got my long run in on saturday then raced to my son's baseball game. 16 games (softball and baseball) later, here I am. Whew that was a wild week end. Both girls finished undefeated but my son's team lost in the semifinals. The real bummer about my son's loss was that the coach on the other team was a real jerk. He cussed at his kids when they messed up (they are 8 year olds!!!)

The high note was watching my dd13's team come back from 7 point deficit to win the championship in pouring rain. DD stole home from second base to tie the game. I think my heartrate maxed out as she slid into home and my pulse never came back down. After the game I was feeling like I do after a race, heart pounding & happy but trying not to throw up. Definite cardio workout!

Mike - I too do the self bribiery thing. For my first year of running, I rewarded myself with a choclate eclair after any run over 2 miles.

Sk8ingmom - welcome!

SAHdad - Sorry about the coughing fit messing up your 10k. I have finally come to grips with the fact that some races just turn out ugly. I will let you know if that makes me appreciate the good ones more.....

Good afternoon Goofs! I'm still here and I'm still exercising. I went out for a run at about 6:30 last night. The timing worked out perfectly since DBF was dealing with his own version of PMS last night and I didn't want to be around him for a little while. I just got changed, threw on sneakers, grabbed by keys, phone and ipod and walked out the door. It was a good run and I wish now that I had stayed out longer. I would have had a good time for a 5K if I had kept going. I'll update the spreadsheet later when I'm home!

Good Afternoon Goofs!!

Welcome Sk8tingMom! I'll be doing my first sprint tri next month. More swim work needed.

Mike - I use a combo of bribery and telling myself to just get in a mile or XX minutes. Like Lisa I then normally feel better and keep going.

Rich - sorry about the coughing fit but man you are fast!! :worship:

Lisa/Cecelia - I don't know how you two manage to keep track of all the kids sports stuff and get in everything else. I had enough trouble tracking one's schedule.

ksoehrlein - sorry your zoo run was a downer. Do hate when they run out of everything before you finish.

Big HELLO to everyone!!!

AFM: My zoo 5K was great! Light rain before it started but that cleared, the sun played hide n seek and temps in the 50's so very pleasant. And the big news...I PR'd! 40:32 for a 13:05 pace. Doesn't sound like a fantastic time but it's quick for me being a walker.

And they know how to feed you after. Bananas, orange wedges, mini cinnimon rolls (those were good), full size Otis Spunkmeyer muffins, potato chips, Doritos and bags of "irregular" Jelly Belly Sportbeans. (Think siamese twin beans.) All that plus a shirt and a neat course for $25. Again makes me wonder what the heck is the matter with Disney and their 5Ks.

Sunday had the 15 mile bike for ACS downtown. Sunny, good temps, great company, fantastic food. Was on pace for a PR until we came back into the downtown area. Roads not closed so traffic lights, buses and cabs - not a good section to race thru.

Lisa - question: the bike ride was an organized event however not a timed event. That means no double miles, right?

Have a great day everyone!!

Sorry I'm doing a run by post.
I'll be mostly MIA next couple weeks. This week is the last week of school. Lots going on with fifth grade moving up festivities (Yes, I am crying.) and wrapping up with swim and gymnastics for the school year. I'm also trying to pack for our WDW trip - we leave on Saturday. :woohoo:

I did a R10/W1 for 5 miles this morning. Pace is still slower than I want, but I was happy to get back to 5 miles again. 6 miles now seems just around the corner... I'm in disbelief I ran a half in January and at a pace faster than what I can run now. Oh, well! The weather was beautiful this morning and I even managed to drag DH out with me to the park to run. :goodvibes

Have a good week Goofs! :grouphug:

Morning Goofers! It is bright and sunny and warm here today after a frost last night...

Just flying through to wish everyone a great day today. I got a 5K in yesterday in 29:55. That's twice now under 30 minutes. DH asked when I was racing again... Yes, I gave him angry eyes. They did not seem to phase him a bit. :sad2: I am looking at a 5K in September but that seems so far away now. Maybe one in June but that is all softball dependent. DD14 has a game tonight and it should be one of the better ones. Middle school softball is not the level of summer league so we take good games when we can get them. DS7 has a baseball game tomorrow night and then DD14 has a double header on Thursday. It is supposed to be nearly 80 by then..:goodvibes Woo hoo for us.

Liz, it is called making use of the calendar feature on my BlackBerry. Every once in awhile it goes off and the kids just look at me because obviously I forgot something...:rolleyes1

Hello Goofs.

No long walk today (Tuesday), raining non stop for the last couple of days. We need the rain badly and my grass is turning green again so not complaining but I am ready to build an ark in the front yard. No end in sight until the weekend.

Trying to plan a trip to NYC and maybe DC without breaking the bank but it looks like that is not possible. Either break the bank or don't go. No win situation.

Hope everyone is having a great week!!
