Stupid idiot Jackhole!!!!!!

I realize that, however, in residential neighborhoods here, it is not legal to pass, even with a yellow dotted line and that was my question...
Deliberately driving into the oncoming lane to block the person who is trying to pass is illegal under any circumstance - passing zone or not. OP may or may not have been in the right. Jackhole most definitely was in the wrong regardless :)

That's why I clicked on the thread! :rotfl2:

It was a new phrase to me, I have heard of a jack wagon before though.

Well, the words I really wanted to use are probably not permitted. The word that would have been after "jack" is the same as would have been before "hole". So I just combined "jack" and "hole". :)

I did not attempt to pass again after he almost hit me. I'm pretty sure this idiot would have hit me if I tried again.

I don't care if you want to drive like a reckless jack wagon. Do whatever your want so long as it doesn't endanger other drivers on the road. However, I still maintain that if you DO run into the kind of jerk that won't LET you pass (yes, they are being a jerk), it would behoove you to back off rather than risk further confrontation with someone who clearly is not a nice person.

I let people pass me all the time. I'd much rather have the speed demon in front of me than behind me riding my bumper. But, not everyone is as reasonable and nice as me.

Agree.

That's good, really rational. Drive as fast as you want, I'll be happy to scrape you off the pavement.
First of all, just because "I" want to pass "you" it doesnt mean im going to drive recklessly and crash into a pole. If you had any experience driving, you'd know this. They just want to pass, happens all the time. As long as youre following the rules of the road and passing when its permitting, there's nothing wrong there. Sure they might be driving a bit faster than you, but so what? Not sure I would bother passing in a residential neighbourhood but whatever. Second of all, the driver who wouldnt let the car pass was being an idiot, thats a good way to start confrontation with someone. Anyone with half a brain wouldn't attempt such a dangerous maneuver. You dont know who youre dealing with out there. Again I say, those drivers should stick their noses elsewhere.

In this case I would have called the Police and reported his erratic behavior. Follow until they pull him over and find out what his problem was.

Exactly my point, let those who want to pass do so, as long as theyre not dangering others. Its fine to pass as long as its permitted. Sounded like the jackhole who wouldnt allow the OP to pass was trying to stir up trouble.

While this thread is bursting at the seams with interesting judgment calls, this one cloaked in what may seem like rational terms probably doesn't play out the way it's written here as it would in reality.

Following isn't a great idea, especially given a possibility that another driver could be armed (legally or not) and might think he has a legal right to self defense when someone is following him.

I had someone follow me once, and I was totally freaked out. It may or may not have started with him thinking I did something wrong on the road, but after a point it's less to do with anything that happened in the past but rather an unknown about someone's intentions. I'm not one who advocates that most people carry guns, but if I had one on me I might have considered it since he had the look of someone who might have a gun and shoot first.

I think it's better to break it off than risk that someone else might be violent.

You must not live in a CCW state.

I do but it is open carry as well which is why I don't get out anymore since I carry most of the time. I don't want that hanging over my head if I do get out. In my younger days, I did some things not thinking them out clearly. I can handle myself pretty well but after getting married and having a son my youthful invincible attitude change. Although, if I feel you are doing something stupid, I will tell you if I get the opportunity at the next light. My wife doesn't like it but I can't help myself.

To me, the OP has road rage issues

to be that upset about it, and start a message board thread with a sort of ugly title shows it

In neighborhoods , I don't pass, because of kids playing

to pass you have no idea if someone will back out of a driveway-or a cross street
just not safe to gain a few minutes

I thought this too, I would like to see a picture of this roadway. I have never seen a neighborhood with lines in the middle of the road period.

No... I don't like idiots both on and off the road.

If you're going to not pass because of kids (potentially) playing then you should just not drive in the neighborhood either. It's just as dangerous.

There's plenty of them in most major cities - many "neighborhoods" are not on quiet suburban streets.

Honestly, if some jerk tried to run me off the road while I was legally passing him, I'd be that upset about it, too. And I'd have a lot worse names for him.

Now, my neighborhood does not even have lines on the road, but living near some more rural areas, I can tell you that there are some residential areas (which some people might call a neighborhood) that DO have lined roads, and areas of passing. I'm not going to try to presume what the OP was referring to. She said she had a dotted yellow line, which indicates that passing is allowed. She was within the law to pass.

And, straight from the NC Driver's Handbook (DS just finished the classroom portion of driver's ed, so we happen to have one): "If you increase speed and fail to give way to a passing vehicle, you will be charged with a misdemeanor if a crash occurs resulting in bodily injury or property damage". So, presuming that all facts were given correctly, the car she was trying to pass was in the wrong (by NC law...your mileage may vary, of course...no pun intended).

I agree that when people act stupid, you have to let them know they are being stupid. Otherwise, they just keep on being stupid.

It is best to not confront those who are exhibiting road rage.

Not all dashed yellow lines mean you can pass. Some place I have seen dashed double yellow lines, rather than leaving a opening at intersection, use the dashed, double yellow to indicate you can cross but not pass. I have also seen the dashed, double yellow to show where your lane was when multiple lanes can make a turn (usually see it on left turns) to keep others from encroaching on the lane to the right.

I guess I don't understand the point of wasting paint on a road in a neighborhood? If any of you live in a neighborhood with painted lines, could you post a pic? I have lived in Indianapolis, spent plenty of time in major cities in Ohio, Kentucky, Illinois, Michigan and don't recall seeing painted lines in a neighborhood. I'm not saying they don't exist, I've just never seen it and still don't understand the point.

This street has solid lines, but it's a random Google Street view I pulled from a local suburb near where I live.

Here it is... the actual road on which this "jackhole incident" occurred:
