With much sorrow in my heart, I have to report that our dear, beloved poster TheRustyScupper (Joe Sandor) passed away early today. He was in his later 70s.

Joe (aka Rusty) was a retired executive of a large, international construction and agricultural machine corporation who was in charge of manufacturing plants at various times all over the world. He was a well educated man (undergraduate from Purdue, I believe). But after the corporate career, he and DW moved to Florida in retirement and they both went to work for the Mouse with Joe working when we knew him in the early 2010s as a Concierge at Fort Wilderness (and also spent time as Concierge at the Wilderness Lodge).

He joined the DIS in 2000 and posted for the last 15+ years mainly on the Camping Board with restaurant reviews, opinions, and advice all thoroughly bullet-pointed and organized. His last post on the DIS was October 21, 2025 and he last viewed the DIS on March 3, 2026. He truly appreciated the campers at Fort Wilderness and saw them as honest, kind, good people that he wanted to work around. As he worked and posted, we saw more of his character and charisma. I met him in person first on our March 2014 trip and as we DIS Campers had visits that coincided with each other, we would get together often for an afternoon for an informal DISMeet and invite Joe and DW. I recall times when @2goofycampers and @Boomer1 and @garneska were at the Fort the same time I was and we would DISMeet together at times - I know others would invite him/DW to an informal DISMeet as well when they were at the Fort. Joe and DW got to be good friends to our family and other DIS Campers, so much so that we also listed Joe and DW on our reservation to guarantee them access to the Fort for a visit whenever we were there.

His life was flipped upside down when he was injured in a terrible car crash on 02/15/17 where a tourist crossed the centerline and hit his Yukon head-on. The policeman later told him that Joe only survived due to the 2 "G"s. God and GM engineering. The surgeries and therapies were done but he was left in a condition that prevented him from being able to stand or walk very far unassisted. He retired again, this time from Disney, and enjoyed his other activities and interests.

There were several things about Joe that he had as his interests.
- he grew up in an age where he loved Annette Funicello (one of the original Mousketeers) and even in recent years would start a "Happy Birthday" thread on Annette's birthday on the Community Board.
- one of his favorite Disney characters was Figment. :confused3
- he loved steam locomotives (as I do) and had an uncle that worked in the steam shop of the Nickel Plate Railroad (NKP around the Toledo, Ohio area) and would take young Joe to the shop.
- he spent some adult corporate time in the Cleveland, Ohio area which is where my family is from. His cell phone number still had a Cleveland area code.
- he would make references to Old Time Radio shows and characters. Often it was Lamont Cranston who was the star of the OTR show 'The Shadow'.
- he would sometimes close out his posts with a 'Ta Ta For Now' (or TTFN), a phrase used by Tigger occasionally.
- he could play the 5-string banjo and was part of that local music scene and once/twice got to sit in with the HDDR review piano/banjo players and do a song or two as part of the show.
- in 2014 he became an ordained minister and would do weddings or vow renewals on Disney property that were NOT openly public; they were done in the guest room or campsite. Disney knew but could not stop him as long as it was private.
- his restaurant reviews were detailed, with bullet points, and opinionated. He would go against the grain if he felt it was deserved (good or bad).

In his spare time he offered his knowledge, effort, experience and advice to the coming generations through programs like SCORE, Give Kids The World, Make-a-Wish, and Kiwanis. He was certainly an intelligent man with a big heart and giving spirit.

He is in heaven tonight with our other passed posters like PaHunter (Chris Bowman) and Stratman50th (Don Frye). Let's add any posts below of Joe/Rusty encounters or reviews. I'll add mine tomorrow.

Bama Ed

PS - Denise (Camping Board Moderator), please leave this on the main Camping Board for a week or so for better visibility before moving it to the Community Board.

PPS - his handle, TheRustyScupper, was a reference to an old, bedraggled sailboat that he used to own.

There are a few posters who seem like they have been here forever, and will be here forever. Then we lose one. 😢 The boards lose a little of their magic with each loss. I’d like to imagine there is a big DIS meet on the other side and he’s been invited to pull up a chair and join in. RIP

The Scupper was a great guy, his lovely wife as well. They actually visited us at FW in 2015 and 2018. I actually had the honor of having him and Ed on my site at the same time in 2018.

In 2019 I was attending a neurology conference at The Grand Floridian with DW and Scupper and his wife met us for lunch and we spent an evening at EPCOT with them.

He especially catered to our two DDs. He would PM me at least yearly to check on them. In 2015 he sent a package to us in December with a two page letter for the girls. He sent them and DW some small Disney trinkets that he had collected over the years. Mine, was something quite special. A very nice pocket watch.

It works very well and I only get it out on special occasions. When Ed had texted me yesterday morning with bad news I got it out of its case from the fireproof safe and gave it a wind up. It's ticking along perfectly with its little gears in the background turning away.

He went on a trip to Ireland a few years back and as usual, he thought of the girls. He sent each of them a stained glass Irish Blessing that both of my DDs keep hanging in their bedroom windows.

Its words brought a tear to my eye when I read it again.

Will miss you Scupper
:littleangel:

Your words are so kind and reflect the Disney heart we all have .
But something about the Fort Friendliness is inspired by these
“ recognizable names” …
I guess we will all have to wear a name tag for that big meet up with Walt Disney…

After years of reading as well as a few opportunities for back and forth on the DIS (I think I got started on here around 2013), I feel very fortunate to have finally met @TheRustyScupper and his wife during the DISmeet at Fort Wilderness in November of 2024. What a life well lived and shared with so many. Thank you for being a friend in this community and beyond! Rest in peace.

This is unfortunate to read. I recall several posts from The Rusty Scupper, but our paths never crossed. Thanks for sharing such a devoted post, Ed. Peace to all those mourning his loss.

The last time I saw Joe and DW was when DW and I went to WDW for the Food & Wine races at the beginning of November 2024. I did the 5k and 10k but then had time to go to Epcot and MK later that stay with Joe and DW.

Two things stand out in my memory of that trip. First at Epcot, I was eager to eat and drink my way around the World. Joe urged me to go slow and we did but that's when I saw his excitement when he got a chance to get a pic with Figment.

And as we ate and drank our way around the World Showcase, I petered out about Germany but Joe made it to the UK pavilion.

But the most important memory is of the MK day. Joe's favorite MK ride/attraction was Carousel of Progress (he would sit in the front row and sing the song lyrics as the room spun-and we sang along too). And he also enjoyed Country Bears (which is right in our wheelhouse). And I recall we rode the Mark Twain Riverboat around the Rivers of America.

Most of all, though, I remember the conversation going around by the Teacups about riding the train (newly opened past Tron). Joe said he had not ridden it since before his accident (IIRC) and I said now is the time (remember his love of steam locomotives). So we maneuvered back to the Fantasyland Station and got him on immediately behind the loco and tender.

He enjoyed it immensely but his back was hurting by the time we got back around (after making a full circle) to Fantasyland Station.

All the memories of rides and meals and DISMeets with fellow campers. Joe was in the middle of it - he and DW WERE the middle of it.

I'll miss my friend. :sad1: Peace, brother.

ED

PS - we were scheduled to see Joe and DW on our planned trip next month. We had a habit of dining together and flipping the tab once each trip. As in they paid for the 4 of us someplace on a trip, the next trip we paid for the 4 of us. I was due to to host next month and had booked Raglan Road. Joe was excited because (as @tiggerdad said previously, Joe had taken his family to Ireland and knew Irish food, drink, and dance) he was ready to get up on the stage and give his best to dance and tap with the young Irish men and ladies. Well - not really but he wanted to and was excited. So I guess I will hoist a Harp's in his honor next month. He was a good man.

I am sorry to hear of his passing.

I always thought he had a connection to Baltimore. The city is home to an iconic restaurant called the "Rusty Scupper." It opened in 1982, overlooking the Inner Harbor and serves crab and other seafood.

That's a good idea,@SteveMouse , but I don't think Joe/Rusty had a Baltimore connection.

His current avatar image was of the FW Railroad drumhead.

But before that, the image here was of a small sailboat tied up dockside with sail under wrap. Of course the current avatar image overrides everything posted in the past under that user ID. Here is the explanation in his own words. The thread title was "What Does Your DIS Name Mean?"

See his post #27 on page 2 of the thread.

Good idea though.

PS - I would have liked to have been a fly on the mast when he was captain under sail.

PPS - and if he had ever been up that way towards Maryland, I would have reimbursed him for the cost of his meal in order to read his written review of it afterwards. ;)
