~*~ Stick It! A thread for Gymnastics Parents ~*~

The coach is really pushing her to far. Baby steps are needed to work through a fear of this type. Has she done it one the high beam with mats built up to the beam. That is how my dd likes to get new skills. They get the feeling of being on the high beam but if they fall it is just like being on the floor. Then when she is ready she removes mats until they are all gone. Well Good luck no matter waht happens.I hope she can work though it and the coach will become more responsive to the psychologist since she (the coach)seems to have given up.

You may have missed the long explanation earlier in this (long) thread. A year ago she was doing the BHS with no spot on the high beam with no problem. Then about 11 months ago she had a terrible fall. I didn't even know until a couple of months ago that she stopped doing the BHS on the beam after that. It really just came to my attention in December when the head coach announced that she would no longer coach the girls with "issues" like DD. For a few days she and a few others were given over to another coach whose "method" was telling them they would have to do 50 BHS on the beam every day until they could do it without fear. DD left every day in tears. Within a week, the head coach acknowledged that it was a big mistake to turn the girls over to that coach. DD wanted to quit gymnastics over this issue, but the coach talked her out of it. There. I think you're caught up.

Wow OK That is rough. I am all caught up. Still sending her good wishes.:wizard:

I still think it wouldn't hurt a darn thing to change the bhs to a roundoff in her routine, esp. since this is her final season.

Wow I'm a new mom to this gymnastics thing....

I'll start here first..

About you and your gymnast: My name is Teresa and my dd is Emily. She is 3 right now.
How old was your child when they started gymnastics? She started by accident when she was 2
What level are they at now? none
Do levels 1/2/3 compete in your area/state? not sure
When is your "season"? I have no clue what this is
Do you have other kids? Are you juggling their activities too? I have a 4 year old son who plays hockey, t-ball, and soccer. A 10 year old that plays hockey, basketball, soccer, and baseball I also watch my 2 nephews during the week and my oldest nephew plays basketball, baseball, and soccer and my youngest nephew plays t ball and soccer.Do you follow gymnastics at the National level? No I don't watch much sports on tv.

I have enjoyed reading everyones comments. I didn't know much about what was envolved in gymnastics.. I took my ds4 to a preschool party at our gymnastic place and my dd EMily wanted to go in. I told her no she wasn't old enough. Well the one lady that runs the office said let her go and try some stuff she'll probably get scared and then you will be fine.. We were watching her and she was walking across the taller balance beam all by herself and the lady that worked there told me she's fine when do you want to start classes.. :rotfl2: :rotfl2: She was only 2 for a month at this point. They ended up creating a class for her and another lady that works there, her granddaughter. They did this for a year and this past time we had to resign up they put her in with the 4 and 5 year olds.. :confused3 I'm not sure what any of this means. All I do is drop her off for an hour a week while I run with the other kids.. My daughter loves it and man is she strong..

I would love to read more stories if anyone is willing to share.. I guess I have LOTS to learn.. Thanks Everyone..

Well our level 3 season is over. She received a blue on floor, red on beam (with a fall--nice beam judge), red on vault (at this level they are to vault with the mat waist high, well it was more shoulder to chest high for her--before being on the spring board), and a white on bars (still missed her mill circle).

Here is what DH and I put up in her room today for her metals and ribbons.

Last night I tried to talk her coach into going to the Sand Dollar meet next year, that way we can tie in a vacation to WDW, instead she told me that they are considering a meet in Vegas for the whole team. Our level 10 is graduating and more than likely heading to Southern Utah, so that thought that way we can visit her also. (Now all I will need is for a parent to watch DD for me so I will be able to hit the casino.)

Aww Great job on her meet. Is the mill circle still in level 4? I know at one point they had talked about taking it out? I love the shelf. Pretty soon you will need several for all the medals and ribbons.

Yes mill circle is still in level 4, we will not compete level 4 until late fall, but more than likely not until next January so hopefully she will stop bending her knee and get it before then.

We have another shelf on the other side of the window that we will also use.

So Friday my son woke up with a pulled groin muscle. I took him to an Arrositi doctor. I carried him in, he walked out. He was able to compete three events on Saturday, rings, p-bars and h-bar. He took first place on rings and second on p-bars. It was the first time he has ever been in first place and the first time he has ever placed on p-bars. The only bad part was that I left DH at home. I didn't have very high hopes for this meet because of the injury.

Way to go on the ribbons this weekend...

About how many kids compete for the places?

I love that shelf. Your dd sure has a lot of ribbons..

Wow that is great that he did so well and healed so quickly. Is he feeling completely better now? I hope so.Your dh must have been disappointed to miss it but now your son knows he can do it so he can do it when dh is there next time.Great job on the 1st and 2nd place finishes.:yay: :cool1:

He is still in some pain. I will take him back for a few more treatments this week. He can't run or straddle. That means no vault, floor or pommels until he is better. I think being hurt kinda of helped him. This is the first time he was ever focused on p-bars. Before he was very loose. On the ride home he kept telling me how he couldn't wait to try being that tight on floor. He is now pumped and ready to compete all six events.

Congratulations to everyone this weekend. :cool1:

My dd's went to Battle Creek and they were in the 7 to 11 age group. This was different because usually they have either 7 to 9 or 7 to 10. There were 26 girls and the program said that they would go out 12 places. At awards they only went out 8 places and my girls only placed on vault and one placed in the AA. My 10 year old had a 35.8 and my 8 year old had a 35.9. It was their best meet this year and hard to see that they didn't place. Jessica had a 9.25 on floor and still didn't place. The other age group was 12 and up and there was 16 girls and they still went out 8 places. My girls would have placed in all events. It was a really tough weekend. The team took third place so that was great. They missed second by .05. Talk about close. Their next meet is a sectional at home so that should be fun.

That is great that he healed so fast. What is an Arrositi doctor?

It's like chiropractic for muscles. It's used a lot by pro athletes. It can heal a sprain in about a week. I have seen girls with Sherman's better in 1-3 visits. When I was a coach I used to send my girls there. This is the first time I have needed it as a mom. I am very happy with the results.

My daughter was allowed to compete yesterday, dispite still not having her back handspring on beam. The coach confessed to her that it wouldn't be fair to not let her her compete because she wasn't going for one skill....she said if she did that and was fair, she'd have to make most of the team sit out...one girl has her giant but refuses to compete it, another hasn't been going for her tumbling passes on floor, etc.

DD tied for 2nd on floor and bars, got 4th on beam and 4th all around. I don't know what the judges found wrong with all of our girls' floors. Each of them scored around .5 lower than the last meet, and all had beautiful routines (e.g. the girl who got a 9.5 last time got a 9.0 this time, DD who got a 9.55 or so last time got a 9.15 this time). The judges did give out a few mid 9s....just not to our girls. They looked terrific to me.

I'm so glad that she was allowed to compete. I hope that her coach allows her to take her time to get her back handspring back. These things seem to just take time and encouragement not pressure. It seems like she had a great meet. Congratulations to her. :cool1:
