~*~ Stick It! A thread for Gymnastics Parents ~*~

my daughters coach doesn't like level 6, so she has them test out and move on to level 7, since it is an optional level, and not a compulsory level. My daughter is in Prep-optional gold, and loves getting to do her own routines. She still does the level 5 vault and a modified level 5 bars, but her beam has 2 bwo and a bhs in it. Her floor has a layout, ariel, and front tuck as some of her skills. She can do all the skills for 6 and is working on her bar skills for 7. We are from a small gym. Most of our team is level 3, 4 and 7. There are only 3 level 5's ( that will be staying level 5 for a 2nd season) and then 2 prep-optionals ( that are testing out and moving up to level 7). Even though it is says Prep-optional is for those wanting a limited time commitment, we still go 15 hours a week, just like our level 7's.

Hi Everyone,

I thought I would let you know how Tori did at her Level 5meet on Sunday.

Vault - 8.675 - 9th place

Bars - 8.65 - 7th place

Beam - 8.80 - 3rd place

Floor - 8.35 - 10th place

AA - 34.475 - 6th place.

She was so excited. This was the first time that she placed in everything.
Not bad for only doing gymnastics for 2 1/2 years.

Our next meet is on the 24th. I can't wait!!

Sabrina
Congratulations! Tori did great.:thumbsup2 :cool1:
Good luck to anyone competing this weekend.I think my dd is officially done for the year and will compete 8 in Nov. Yea time to work on new skills.Last night she was working blind changes on bars She came home so happy she was bouncing off the walls.

bcvprincesses thanks for the prep op info. looks interesting.

dis4me - this sounds like JOGA here in NJ, doesn't it.

My dd's team does not do prep-op but I was curious about it and here is what I found.

WHAT IS IT?
• An alternative USA Gymnastics competitive program
WHO IS IT FOR?
• Anyone who desires the challenge of optional routines and competition
• Those wanting a limited time commitment
• Those who are preparing for a high school team, and or level 7
• Those that are stuck in the JO program and unable to move up, but love
gymnastics.
WHY?
• Provide a means and a purpose for continued gymnastics participation.

Here is a link for more.

Is anyone competing this weekend? We are going to Cereal City in Battle Creek. It is a pretty big meet with three gym at the same time. I feel bad for our coaches because they have the level 6 and level 9 meet at the same time. Lots of running back and forth for them. There is also the mens level 9 and 10 at the same time so there will be some great gymnasts to watch.

Great job Tori, she had a wonderful meet and should be proud of herself! Great AA and look at beam 3rd place!

Yes that's what I was thinking too. My dds friend went to JOGA and loves it. It is so much more relaxed and they only practice about 8 hours a Week. MY dd said what would I do the rest of the time.LOL
Did your meet get cancelled this weekend? I saw it on the USAG website but it is no longer listed.oops nevermind it is there again. Is your daughter competing in it? It says levels 3-8
Forgot to mention Team Championships were OK this year. I think there were 10 teams there. Our gym took 1st and 3rd Paramount 2nd. DD was on the 3rd place team. She got.9.05 vault 9.1 bars 9.6 beam and 9.125 floor. Allaround 36.875. Highest all around was a 37.8 I think so scores were OK this year.

Do you mean 8 hours a WEEK, or really 8 hours a day?

Yes our meet did get canceled, it was doomed from the beginning. I am the meet director for our gym and I didn't want to do it that weekend, but the owners were set on that weekend. Most knew it would never fly because of the Star Struck Meet - oh well!

Sounds like your dd did well at Team Championships, her beam score was fantastic - did she finish first on beam?

Sorry to hear that. We lost our big fundraising meet this year because of a technicality so we are really hurting. I hope this does't have to big an effect for you. The girls always love having home meets and it is a chance to see other levels compete since we don't get to do that often

They didn't do individual awards. They announce the higest optional and compulsary score and then did team awards out 6 places. We actually had 3 teams there.

just wondering who has meets this weekend? We have our Ky Judges Cup. My daughter will be in the 11-12 year old Prep-op Silver. She has been working hard on her backhandspring this week on beam. She is so excited that she finally got it. Good luck to all this weekend.

Don't know if we're competing this weekend or not. We've paid for the meet. DD's coach told her she would allow her to compete ONE meet with a backwalkover on the beam instead of the BHS. She did that and the coach said no more-if she doesn't have her BHS on the beam, no more meets. Right after that first meet, DD met with the sports psychologist. DD is making some progress, without a lot of cooperation from the coach with the psychologist. I guess we'll find out on Saturday whether or not she competes on Sunday.

Making DD scratch the whole meet would pretty much be in direct contradiction with what the psychologist is trying to do. DD is supposed to contain the fear of the BHS and not let it grow larger through thinking about it at school or even at the gym. Even while working on the beam, she is not supposed to think about it except when it's time to do it. Making her scratch the whole meet would reinforce the idea that it IS a huge deal, which is the opposite of what the psychologist wants to reinforce.

That is really a shame that the coach won't work with the psychologist. It is like having 2 strikes against her then. Has your dd missed her hands in practice? Will she do it with a spot? It is so hard when they are up against a mental block like that. It is frustrating for all involved, especially you as the parent because you go between wanting her to do it, but also sympathizing with her because of the fear. I hope she is able to work through it and the coach lets her compete this weekend.
Let us know what happens. Here is some pixie dust for her. Maybe if she gets angry enough at the coach she will just get up there and do it.:wizard:

She will usually do the BHS on the low beam with a spot. Earlier this week she did it on the low beam without a spot, but with extra mats around the beam. Since she was able to do it that way once, the coach says no more extra mats. So now she can't do it anymore. I really think the psychogist's plan will work in the end and the psychologist really wanted to get the coach on board, but the coach has been non-responsive with the psychologist. I only took her to the psych AFTER the coach said "I'm at my wits end" and "I don't know what to do with her," so the coach shouldn't feel like we're going around her.

Last level 3 meet for my DD tonight. I have to go get her from school in about 90 minutes so that we can get ready and head down to Milwaukee at about 2pm for the meet.

Hoping the adrenaline can take over and she will make her mill circle when she is being judged, not just in warm ups.

I bet a level 3 meet is adorable. Our girls didn't compete until Level 4 and they were pretty darned cute then.

The coach is really pushing her to far. Baby steps are needed to work through a fear of this type. Has she done it one the high beam with mats built up to the beam. That is how my dd likes to get new skills. They get the feeling of being on the high beam but if they fall it is just like being on the floor. Then when she is ready she removes mats until they are all gone. Well Good luck no matter waht happens.I hope she can work though it and the coach will become more responsive to the psychologist since she (the coach)seems to have given up.
