Anyone done a spray on tan before? My cruise is in August, and I'm super pale. I used to be the tanning bed queen prior to other cruises, but I have a family history of skin cancer and know better know. I want to look tan without actually tanning.

Will it last the whole cruise? (it is a 3 night cruise). Will it get on your clothes?

Any info would be greatly appreciated!

The ones I have used last at least 3 days. You won't look super tan but it takes the pale-ness away. You use it before you get dressed and it dries pretty quick and after it dries it won't stain your clothes. I think I've used neutragena and not sure what other brands. They might be on sale at this time of year too, I have found them buy one get one free at Walgreens before.

Of course they have much more expensive air brush tanning at tanning places, and I think I even saw it at Dillards/Macy's at the mall now.

You will still need protection as August I am sure is prime time for sunburn so the spray on won't change that, I assume. We are going in Aug too and I will spray some on my legs even though I tan easily but just to take away some of the "white glare" on the first day. :upsidedow

I can't tell you what to do, but I will tell you a funny story.

There was this woman on our cruise with a drop dead golden tan. She looked liked something out of a magazine! Well... it was a spray on tan. How do I know, once she went into the salt water pools it started coming off slowly day by day. It was hysterical. By the end of the 7 day cruise she was as white as a ghost. EVERYONE noticed, because she flaunted her faux tan to EVERYONE.

I personally wouldn't bother with it. I'm fair skinned, strawberry blond and never tan myself...just burn  Anyway, over the years I've tried the lotions and even went to a professional spray tan salon and tried that once. It washed off quickly and ran onto clothes etc...definitely, in my opinion, not worth the hassle. The benefit didn't outweigh the costs and hassles. Again, just one persons opinion.

I bought some stuff at CVS. It was a cream moisturizer and bronzer. I apply it every day. It works great. I suggest going to a drugstore and seeing what they have over the counter. This way, you can keep applying it the duration of the cruise.

Good luck!!

OK I just checked and the kind I use is Sally Hansen Airbrush Sun - it is a spray and you have to rub it in to even it out - if not you can see where you applied it and where you didn't. I have never had it to "wash" off and the pools are fresh water on the cruise, not sure what the beach water would do but it more kind darkens your legs and I can't see it just coming off, it does fade after a few days. I am not sure your coloring, I have more olive colored skin so it may have different results on a more pale person, but I think it is fine and pretty inexpensive way to take away that "ghostly" white especially on your legs (I've never used it on any other part of my body).

Maybe experiment a week before to see if you like it. The bronzing lotions (there is even a Target brand) do pretty much the same thing, just much more slowly and harder to see results, but they do help also. I just am not crazy about how they smell.

I considered getting a spray-on tan for a formal event recently and decided against it. I am also a fair strawberry blond. I have decided I like the pale look, but I have been using Dove Energy Glow, which gives subtle color and helps even out tan lines.

Ok, I'm no stranger to the faux-tan. The OTC creams work a bit, will take the "ghost" away, but you won't be "tan" by any stretch of the imagination.

If you go to a salon and have them airbrush you then you will be tan and it will look awesome. Yes, it will last 3 days, then gradually start to fade. they will tell you it lasts a week. That is a bunch off crap. It doesn't.

You can't get wet for at least 8 hours after spraying- so if it's raining outside forget about it.

If you go the day before your cruise you will be good until the day you get home....and no, it doesn't come off on your clothes at all.

You WILL feel sticky after the application. Best to wear loose-fitting clothes to the place, and there is a bronzer in the initial application, so that can rub off on your clothes. After you take your first shower though that washes off and then nothing will rub off after that.

It is not cheap, but if you feel that having color makes you more confident and happy then go for it. I know it really makes me less self-conscious. I do it sometimes before we go to Disney b/c I feel like my skin is so white I look blue sometimes. I love having a tan and wish I could just feel better about my natural white hue, but it's something I've never come to terms with.

good luck and have a great time!

I'm fair-skinned, strawberry blond hair and skin cancer at age 31. I wear high SPF sunscreen (repeasted every 20-30 minutes) and still get burned. Now I just wear a swim shirt so it doesn't matter if I'm tan :rotfl:

I've tried the spray on tan one time, and on my skin it looked terrible on me! I needed to wear a turtleneck & jeans in July until I got rid of it!!!! I would try it out before your cruise, so you are not stuck with something you don't like.

I've used the gradual tanning lotions and they work fine.

good luck w/ your decision. It is so hard...I have tried to make the same decision. And if I had a glowing tan I would show it off too :thumbsup2 (have not had one since I was a kid really)!:lmao:
As for it rubbing off...yes that does happen...chlorine really eats at it...I have noticed that especially with the tans you get in a "booth" but the other posters are spot on...just take some with you and use it during your trip and have fun!

Okay I have to admit it I am a tanner. I go to a tanning salon on a regular basis. I am very pale but I do tan in the beds. I tried the spray on tan once before going on vacation. It was fine until I stepped into a swimming pool. The chlorine removed my tan and made me look horrible. I spent most of my vacation in the bathtub scrubbing and soaking.

I know the risks associated with the tanning beds and am looking for an alternative method to get some color. :confused3 I like the way my new hubby looks at me when I have a tan. :bride:

all the big stars are not tanning ...check out Carrie Underwoods skin....I think no tan lines or a compete real tan...the in betweens are not worth the trouble,,,but the sun does cause problems,,,,,,,you decide ..

I liked the results with the Neutrogena product. To prevent staining my hands I wore food prep gloves, and I exfoliated before using it so the application would be even on my legs.

I would suggest skipping it. Not only will it rub off on your clothes, it can appear very blotchy in photographs. Trust me, I'm a photographer, and unless you're a photoshop guru it can take hours trying to fix that!

I thought about a spray tan for my cruise until I read a post on the disboards from a lady who did it for her cruise and then got in the water and it started coming off all blotchy. I'm going to see if I can find the post. Ditched my plan after that so now my plan is to go all natural.

Healthy is the new "in" look. And for most complexions, that would be pale.

It's okay. Really.

This red-haired, green eyed Irish girl will go being her usual lily white! I'm not worried about what others think - I'm going to go and have a great time.

I know pale is 'in'...but pale looks pretty bad on fat, lol! I a plus size gal, and a little color helps me a bit. I'm working on the weight, but too bad it doesn't come off as easy as it goes on, lol.

Thanks for all the info and suggestions. I may just use a self tanner of some sort on my pasty legs...my arms have a bit of color. I don't really plan on using the pool, so hopefully the tanner on the legs will do it!

thanks!

I am very pale and only burn. I have keep the SPF on me and my daughters. My husband tans very easily. What I use if I want a bit of color on my legs is a product I purchased at Victoria's Secret called Beyond Bronze. It's only temporary and comes off when you take a shower. I mix it with a bit of lotion and it does the trick. We live in Arizona where you never wear stockings, so I use this often. A little goes a long way, my bottle has lasted over a year! Good luck with your tan and weight loss... I am working on my weight loss as well.
