Special balloon release?

Maybe. But, it's a way that people can honor their loved ones and that is more important to me. It's a nice thought.

My kids do it on Fathers day for my dad, and the day that my dad died. Sometimes they write notes or color pictures.

I'm glad that Disney is allowing you to honor your step son in that way, that is very sweet. I would imagine the pictures of the balloon event will be treasured by you and your family.

I think as long as the person kept the balloon number to a minimum, didn't do it at AK, and bought the balloons from Disney...go for it. Love the photopass idea.

Lighten up Francis :)

FLORIDA, USA
372.995 Release of balloons

(1) The Legislature finds that the release into the atmosphere of large numbers of balloons inflated with lighter-than-air gases poses a danger and nuisance to the environment, particularly to wildlife and marine animals.

(2) It is unlawful for any person, firm, or corporation to intentionally release, organize the release, or intentionally cause to be released within a 24-hour period 10 or more balloons inflated with a gas that is lighter than air except for:

(a) Balloons released by a person on behalf of a governmental agency or pursuant to a governmental contract for scientific or meteorological
purposes;

(b) Hot air balloons that are recovered after launching;

(c) Balloons released indoors; or

(d) Balloons that are either biodegradable or photodegradable, as
determined by rule of the Marine Fisheries Commission, and which are closed by a hand-tied knot in the stem of the balloon without string, ribbon, or other attachments. In the event that any balloons are released pursuant to the exemption established in this paragraph, the party responsible for the release shall make available to any law enforcement officer evidence of the biodegradability or photodegradability of said balloons in the form of a certificate executed by the manufacturer. Failure to provide said evidence shall be prima facie evidence of a violation of this act.

(3) Any person who violates subsection (2) is guilty of a noncriminal infraction, punishable by a fine of $250.

(4) Any person may petition the circuit court to enjoin the release of 10 or more balloons if that person is a citizen of the county in which the balloons are to be released.

Just be sure it's less than ten so you don't kill too many marine animals! :thumbsup2

So sorry for your loss. My grandson passed away in March 2011 and after the service there was a balloon release. We had to have it outside of the city limits becaus our city has an ordinance against it but the county doesn't. Hope it goes well at Disney.

When in doubt, go to the experts, Disney themselves. They said it's fine and to even personalize it isn't a problem :)

Keep in mind though, that when you call Disney, you are talking to someone in a call center who may not ever have been to WDW.
You would think they would give correct answers, but very often, people find that calling 3 different times and talking to 3 different CMs give 3 contradictory answers.

So, it is possible that you may be stopped, especially if you have more than 2 or 3 balloons or if you involve a CM in the release.
As long as you don't use Mylar balloons and don't have many, it's not much different than the occasional balloon that gets away from a child.

Edited to add: I don't think Disney sells any latex balloons. The clear balloons with a colored Mickey head have latex Mickey heads and vinyl clear balloons as far as I know. And the shiny metallic balloons are Mylar, I believe.

I have never understood why people want to honor their loved ones memories by doing something that results in the death of endangered species...:confused3

. . . illegal to intentionally release balloons because of the impact on the environment . . . can be eaten by wildlife or cause litter problems . . .

1) So, honor a child by killing animals and by polluting.
2) Sound reasonable?
3) Why not send money to a charity as a honorarium?
4) It would both honor and help find a cure.

So sorry for your loss. Have you considered paper laterns? (like the ones in the Tangled movie) you probably wouldn't be able to do it in the park, but I'm sure you could find a spot with a view of the castle to do it. You could write messages on them. Your still having a 'release' but with bio-degradable materials.

Up here, in the great white north, we have a manmade island in the middle of a park where , once a year, cancer survivors or family members of cancer victims can puchase a paper lantern, light it, and release it into the water, it is a beautiful sight, ! Very sorry for your loss....can't imagine :hug:

Not to add to the Debbie downers but I'm pretty sure those lanterns use a flame like a hot air balloon. There would be a possibility of starting a major fire particularly if done during the dry season.

How about donating to a group that rehabilitates wild birds and releases them once they are well again? Similar idea, but a living animal instead of something that might ultimately harm an animal.

Really folks?? Really?????

I mean yes the environment is special and needs to be treasured like all other things.

But the original poster just lost her step son and was asking a logical question to HONOR his life and passing...and some of you have the gall to condemn her because you make it sound like shes TRYING to kill endangered species.

Wow, sad. Get your priorities straight.
