Do my credits have to be used(i.e. travel initiated or completed) before the expiration date, or just booked by the expiration date?

Travel must be completed by the expiration date.

So could I use the credit to book a one way ticket before and then do a separate transaction where I book the return after? The expiration date is the week we want to go on our next vacation.
