We visited friends in Grand Rapids, MI this Saturday and Sunday. We stayed at a hotel Sat. evening because they have a small son (19 months) and we have 3 kids--I know people always say "stay with us", but it's kind of an imposition when you are a family of 5.
The hotel we've stayed at before was full so I booked a Best Western with a really cool looking pool. We got to the hotel about 10PM which gave us an hour. We all went down to the pool, which was pretty full but still had room. The kids played in the pool and DH and I sat on the edge of the hot tub (we have one at home but don't keep it THAT hot). After a while DH got into the pool with the kids and I sat on the side.
There were two kids in the hot tub--looked about 15,16 at the most. A boy and a girl. She was practically in his lap. DH looked at them, and then turned to me real embarrassed and said that the boy had his hand down her top. If so, she didn't seem to have a problem with it.
Well since someone else is in the hot tub they go into the pool. They are in the pool up to about neck level with her in front of him, her back to his front--or her front to his front sometimes. I also see that he has his whole family there, as his little brother keeps talking to them. I'm guessing he brought the GF along for a family trip, or it's two families traveling together with a little Romeo and Juliet thing going on. There were a couple of obnoxious families there who probably went with these two.
Now don't get me wrong, he wasn't taking advantage of a fair maiden or anything, she was an active participant. At one point he started to back through the pool and she had her legs wrapped around his waist so he kind of dragged her along. As the pool was getting ready to close he was sitting on the side, and she was laying in the pool floating on her back, anchored by his feet, with her legs stretched out and out of the pool and her feet resting on his chest! (I hope you can picture this).
Well at that point a mom in the adjacent area got up and came over to them. I thought, good, someone is going to either tell this boy to stop disrespecting this girl by mauling her in public, or tell the girl to get her trampy rear end up to the room.
NO--Mom goes over to the boy, says "SMILE!" and takes a picture of him with the girl's feet resting on his chest! Then they make some small talk and she leaves. Way to parent!
Now before I get flames that kids have to grow up sometimes, etc., this was in front of many other swimmers and they weren't all related to this couple. My younger ones ignored it but the 12 year old saw most of it. She has been told that if a boy tries to disrespect her like that in public she is to kick him a good one. I would like to think most moms would say "I know you're attached to Susie, but you're going a little overboard on the public display, so can you cool it a little?" I don't know if I was more disturbed by the public groping or the mom taking a picture!

Yuk. The mom taking the picture is way more disturbing than teens doing what teens do best. I sometimes wonder about parents who feel their job is to be a best friend rather than a parent.

Couldn't agree with you more ::yes::

I agree.

I would never have even considered behaving that way with a guy in front of my mother. I would have NEVER seen that guy again, I'll tell you that right now.

Yuckola!!! The parents of those kids are going to end up grandparents before they know it!

That type of behavior isn't limited to teens, though. I was out one evening with my DH walking around a shopping/restaurant area. There was live music playing outside and many people either walking by or listening to the music. There was one couple who were standing listening to the music, facing the same way with the lady (not hardly a lady) in front, um, freak dancing. They seemed to be having an enjoyable time, if you know what I mean. They were probably in their 50's or 60's! I'm used to seeing that kind of behavior at the pool with the older teens (and not even that graphic), but those people were way old enough to have some common sense, know better, and have a different venue to do whatever they wanted with each other without people witnessing it.

First, let me just say that I'm not into any type of public display AT ANY AGE or marital status so yuck! However, perhaps these 'kids' weren't really kids at all. I was often mistaken as much younger than I was (unfortunately it doesn't happen as much now). I was carded til I was 30. When I was 25 and expecting my first son I worked in social work with teenage pregnant girls and ran a support group at two of our high schools. More than once I was asked for my hall pass by faculty because it was assumed I was one of the students in the group rather than the one running it, lol.

I'm hoping that was the case here.

Yeah, try and say something to the couple or the mom and expect to get a profanity laced tirade. I

And people can't figure out why teen pregnancy is such a problem. Add this nice couple to the potential list of 'parents' and children we'll be paying for before too long!

I agree w/ Disney4us, not that I encourage public displays like the one you saw, however, I'm 24 years old and am CONSTANTLY being mistaken for 16. I can't even buy a lottery ticket without showing my ID. My best friend and her husband (who are also both 24) look the same, 16 at best. I know we all get it all the time, so maybe you just mistook their ages.

tricia.

I wouldn't have seen that guy or any other guy. I'd be in a nunery right now and I'm not even Catholic :earseek: .

Wait these 2 were in the water, and you got in anyway

I agree that it's not just teenagers who act this way. I was at a hotel at Cedar Point in a balcony room with a view of the pool. We went to the room to nap during the afternoon and I went to read on the balcony while the kids napped. OMG!! A couple in their 30's were practically going at it in the pool with other people all over the place in the middle of the afternoon. I couldn't believe it. Go to your room for goodness sake!

The same thing happens to me all the time. I get mistaken for about 12/13 and I'm going to be 20 soon. Hopefully the case is that they just look young for their ages but public displays like that are just inappropriate no matter what the age.

I posted about a similar problem a while back about my neighbor's DD and her boyfriend in their front yard.  Let's just say that DH calls it "The yard Mambo".  It's disgusting the way this girl and boy carry on for all the neighborhood to see while mom and dad are home. About 2 weeks ago, they started rolling around on the grass and the mom came out and said something to the daughter, they finally stopped. It hasn't happened since, but it was totally disgusting.

The thing that I don't understand is that the parents are really strict, yet they have allowed it to happen while they were home. Their next door neighbor even mentioned something about it to me about it and apparently "the show" also takes place in the backyard.

As for the parent taking a pic of the "couple", all I can say is   .

now that is gross! i would have said something but that is just me. i guess it wouldnt have helped any but i still would have wanted to. i would never act that way in front of people married or not. and the mom taking the picture of them!?!?! no way! that is so nasty. i cant even imagine what my mom would say :earseek:

It doesn't matter how old they were. At any age that kind of PDA is not acceptable.

I completely agree, it's just disgusting and inappropriate to be doing those types of things in a public place.

I guess I don't think it is a huge deal. It isn't like the two were kissing each other and making out in front of everyone.

Although I don't agree with the level of PDA, I also don't think it is all that bad.

I know at the age of 15 and 16 I was experimenting with sex (and managed to NOT get pregnant - thank you very much) - so it doesn't seem that strange to me. However - I would never ever act that way in front of my parents!

But they WERE kissing and making out in front of everyone, including the kid's little brother! It was like dirty dancing in a pool! I certainly call crushing your pelvises together PDA, especially in front of strangers.
Maybe he was trying to cop a feel in private, but when there are other families in the pool someone is probably going to see it.
I don't think she could have been over 16; I teach HS and have a pretty good eye for ages.
Wonder how the pictures came out? think they'll frame that one?
