So...when you buy in to DVC....

and you stay at your home resort only(just for sake of this question) do you stay in the same building each time or are you not buying the structure itself but the right to stay in, let's say a studio at SSR. So you may not always end up in the same physical building but another unit of equal value.

Does that make sense?

You are buying a percentage of a particular unit, based on the number of points you buy. A unit may be a Grand Villa for example, or maybe 2 or 3 2-br's. It doesn't really matter. You then use those points to make a reservation.

The unit you own has no bearing on where you stay. You may end up never staying in the 'unit' you own. For instance, at SSR, you may end up in a 2-br in Congress Park, or a 1-br in the Grand Stand, or a studio in the Springs, or a 3-br THV. Whatever you reserve.

I did see a suggestion from someone to buy half the points you need and bank them for a trip every other year. That might work out for us since we don't come to WDW each year.

That's a good way to look at it. Don't plan on using DVC to trade out to non-DVC resorts and non-Disney places. There are so many cheaper timeshares that you can use for that.

When you buy into DVC, you purchase points. You can use those points anyway you like. So if you have enough points for two studios in a year or one one-bedroom in a year, you can use them anyway that works.

One thing that many members have done, just to start, was to buy a small contract via the resale market so they could become a member, for those every other year or even every third year stays.

It allows for a much smaller committment to DVC to start but allows you to experience it. For example, you could start with a 50 point contract and using banking and borrowing, end up with 150 points to use for a trip every 3 years. Depending on the resort that you choose, you could end up getting a 50 point contract for less than $5000.00.

Unless they change and start charging everyone a closing fee. That was only added in the past year or two to new member purchases.

No, no closing costs right now. And, once you are a member, you qualify for better incentives at a lower level of point purchase.

For example, I bought in with a small VWL contract. When I added on at BLT, I bought 130 points. I paid the same price per point that was being offered to new members at the 200 point level.

this was recently started for new memberships only.

there are no closing costs for add-ons.

Sorry for the confusion. I was responding to the posters question regarding add on contracts once you are a member. In those cases, right now, there are no closing costs.

For new members, you do pay something for closing.
