So what do you do?

For all those that think the people on the "other" board are mean, be honest with yourselves. You have never, ever read a post and rolled your eyes, or had any negative thoughts? Honestly.

.

ITA- But it sure does stink when the negativity is about you:lmao: :rotfl2:

But then guess what, suck it up and move on.

Like you said- everyone has rolled their eyes about a post- or poster. If you say you have not- then you are fibbing. Some choose to pass over it and others just need to discuss it I guess.

Not everyone gets along IRL- everyone brings their personalities here to the boards and not everyone will get along. It is funny how some people can just "rub you the wrong way" with a post, OK, POSTS!- but that is how life is- you gravitate towards those who think like you do- and need to vent about those who do not!;) In anyway you find fit- on another site- or via personal e-mail!;)

I just want to give a
tschuess-traurig-winken.gif
miss ya to my MIA freinds........

Geez, WHAT is going on? Can somebody PM me? Okay....from what I've read, maybe not? What's happening?

Gosh, I was away in Disney for a week and I have no idea what is going on, but then again I don't know that I really want to know what is going on.

I'll be honest. Yes, I have. I have laughed out loud, rolled my eyes and even made a negative remark on a private board. I've never once claimed to be perfect.Far from it. And there are some outrageous posts here and some wackiness for sure. We're all wacky in our own way. I just do not think one needs to be totally nasty to vent about some of that wackiness, that's all. Esp. when it is an open board and when people read things about themselves they can be very hurt.

I have nothing against people posting wherever they want. I have friends on that other board. Since that board was created though, I have never seen anyone go over and discuss it or defend themselves and not look like a complete nutcase. In the end, it might all die down and they'll hang around and blend into the crowd but they never look good in the heat of the moment...ever.

And no matter where we go, in the world, the www, etc we are always going to run into mean people. Here it's just slightly sanitised and "safer" (for lack of a better word) than other websites. And maybe that's the downfall of not being able to tell someone outright they're being a jerk, etc. I think being able to vent is a good thing, and being able to have a discussion about why it irks you. But if we can't do that here then we can't even have the discussion. I'm not even sure what I'm trying to get at here, so I'm just going to stop.

And this highlights the other incredible oddity. Some posters post here and there freely, and often are quite nasty over there. But nothing happens to them here. How can that be fair to those who remain here, or to those that have gotten the boot here for simply asking what is going on???

All of this adds up to a twilight zone kind of atmosphere over here.

And there are folks who still post over here that have gone there to defend themselves. In making their defense, they have been just as nasty as the 'regulars' over there. But they are allowed to stay here. Is it okay because they were 'defending themselves'?

Kathy, I do apreciate you allowing this thread to continue. I'm not real sure why I'm so drawn to it since I don't post that much here anymore. Maybe I just like controversy or something. But I don't like the feeling of wondering if I do post on the other board if it will get me banned from here.

Truth be told, I've read some pretty nasty stuff said about people over here by regular DISers. Only difference is the language used to do it. But slamming someone can be done with or without swear words. Some people here on the DIS have become masters of picking at people without using swear words. But when they do it, their prey feels attacked and hurt nonetheless.

I can remember back when the Maelstrom thread was real active here that there was this big controversy over all the clique threads and people not liking them, etc. I stepped out of my little box of Maelstrommers and started a thread asking why the clique threads were a bad thing. I can remember being 'put in my place' by a couple of people who disagreed with me. They didn't swear at me. But the condescension with which they shared their opinions caused me to climb right back into my Maelstrom box. I didn't want to push it too far, so I just left well enough alone and went away.

My point is this. If we really think that the nastiness doesn't happen here, we've got blinders on. The other thing is that fair needs to be fair. If some are going to be banned for nastiness, let's include all the nasty people.

Blessings!
Mark

I am pleasantly surprised to see this thread still going. Thanks to everyone for keeping it civil. I admit I enjoy reading the "other" site. Sometimes it does get nasty and sometimes it is just hilarious. The amazing thing I have found is that sometimes I will be reading a fight and by the end they actually resolve the issues. It's kind of nice to see people allowed to fight it out and maybe be a bit wiser by the end.

Regardless of what you think of the other board, there is a greater principle at stake. When we are on this board, we are obligated to follow their rules. That's only fair. But those rules do not extend beyond this forum. If these people were, in fact, banned for posting on another message board that is fundimentally unfair and wrong.

Today it might be a board you dislike or disapprove of. What if tomorrow it's a board you like to post at? What if it's some innocuous homeschooling board, or scrap booking board? Where does it end?

I think you touched on a very important point. I wonder how many people know that this is not the first time this has happened? It's getting a lot of attention because of the size of it (almost 100 people who had a combined post count of over 400,000), but this very thing has happened to members of other boards before. So yeah, it's probably just a matter of time before they move on to some other message board. Not to mention the fact that they also have banned at least two people based on what they wrote on their own personal blogs.

I feel sorry for those of you that are waiting for the Dis to tell their side. I think you have a very long wait ahead of you. Should that time actually ever come around it will surely be a poorly crafted lie, because not only are the people who run this board power mad, they are also dishonest down to the very core of their being.

Innocent people don't run around deleting posts and trying to keep people from talking about an issue. Only people who have something to hide do that. If you do take the time to visit the other board you will see that there is no hiding going on over there. No deleting of threads or posts. Heck, they don't even have an edit button. Anything you want to know about what has happened here is there, the good, the bad, and the ugly. How sad is it that people are afraid to go over there and read for fear of being banned here.

To all of you that are missing your friends I am really sorry. However, I'm even more sorry that you are left here.

Well said Mark

It's not as if we all eat rainbows and poop butterflies over here either. :rotfl:

Perhaps we do not curse at each other like sailors but sly remarks and downright rudeness exists on this board too. Tho apparently, the rules for who can say what, how and when are applied differently to different people over "here".

OMG that is hilarious!!! I needed that one. :lmao:

Ooops, things that make you go Poof...see ya around Norge.

I'm happy to see that we're finally allowed to discuss this. I think that had people been allowed to ask questions in the beginning, a lot of this could have been avoided. But there was such a rush to try and sweep this under the rug that many long-time posters had to get bolder and bolder to get their voices heard. At this point, it seems most of the people banned had little to nothing to do with the other board before all this happened. Not being allowed to talk about it here almost forced them over there.

For the record, I don't really have any ties to that board and really only "spoke to" most of those that were banned in passing while on the same threads here. I think I'm like a lot of people who felt that it stopped being about "us vs. them" a long time ago and that anyone was at risk of losing their welcome here, regardless of how much value you added to this board. Whether or not that was the message that was intended here isn't really the point. It's the message that many people received through various actions.

There's a very unique viewpoint when you're on the outside and watching both sides. And seeing posters who you feel have contributed so much positive content cast aside it unsettling at best. Back to the whole "whether or not that was the message that was intended" thing, from where a lot of us sit, watching good DISers disappearing while the only mention from TPTB is a mention or two about lawyers being involved almost seems to insinuate that these DISers are involved in criminal activity. I'm sure if you try and look at it from where we stand, you can see how that'd be unsettling.

I'm sure no one will change their minds about the situation, but hopefully by hearing what we have to say will at least help you realize how this is appears to fairly neutral parties.

People forget that the web is dynamic and that people are coming and going all the time. If the CB ceased to exist the DIS would go on and probably continue to grow.
I don't think it's necessary to publicly make fun of people who bug you.....the claim of wanting "free speech" is often made by people who want to rationalize being able to say mean things to others. True free speech does not seek to cause emotional injury.

I won't judge anyone on the "other" board. It is their right to post where and what they want. If they want to call foul on someone, that's fine. They encourage that person to come over and discuss it. I also know that if any one of us gets banned in the future they will welcome you with open arms, no matter what they think of you. I don't know that everyone here can say that.

I have been over there for the last week, because it's one of the places I could find out what was going on, including the list of those banned. Which is better than assuming someone I regularly post with (or at least enjoy reading) has gotten caught up in RL and just isn't around for a week. And if you ask innocently here where is someone, it can get you points or being banned yourself.

In the immortal words of a former DISer ... amen.

This "incident" has made for some interesting bedfellows indeed. It has also left a resounding void on what used to be a great daily distraction. It seems crazy that people have to feel forced to choose.

Geez, the things that happen when you go away for a weekend. :sad1:

I think I've pieced together what happened, and I have to say I'm shocked and saddened and the level of censorship that seems to be occuring on this board.

I know that I am very sad for the ones that have lost good friends here it breaks my heart for you. I have never made friends with anyone like alot of you have. I however do love the posts of alot of the ones that did get banned from here some knew exactly what to say to everyone and thats what bothers me so bad.
I know that I am not a poster that everyones knows or cares about but I still am very sad for all that is going on right now and I dont know really what that even is.I dont know what ha[ppened and when it even happened i have just read about it here and thats all.i dont even know what the other board is. But just knowing that so many here have lost such good friends makes me want to cry:sad1: .
I truly hope this all works out in the end but I do have a feeling that it will never ever be the same here and thats what saddens me more than anything.
The Dis was totally diffrent when I joined over 6 years ago than what it is now.

:grouphug: to all.

And thereby hangs the tale....I don't think people would be half as upset if it hadn't been made abundantly clear that there is favoritism going on. There are people on that ever growing list that have never said a mean word to, or about ANYONE. There are people left here, who have been downright NASTY, but still survive.

Like TeresaNJ stated, I too CHOOSE to stay here and no one is holding a gun to my head. If spewing venom is your cup of tea, go to the other website. Personally its not mine. Have a good time.
