So I filed for divorce

and they sent me a copy of the wrong papers!

I got a large envelope the other day in the mail from the atty. I didn't open it because I *thought* I knew what it was. When I opened it tonight, the The first several, separate sheets were fine. But when I got to the divorce filing, they were for another couple! Totally and completely different from the copy i received for preview.

For one thing, this couple has no children, there was nothing in there about custody. So it wasn't just that they put the wrong names on the document.

I hope they filed the right papers in court and served my husband the right papers.

I have a call in to my lawyer now, and hope he will call me back in the am as early as possible.

i find this totally unacceptable, and will demand that all rectification be made on their dime, not mine.

I'd be really upset if I found out someone else got important and very private papers that weren't for them to see. I hope your lawyer understands how this was a terrible mistake. I hope they didn't give your papers to the wrong people too. Sorry you have to be going through a divorce plus the problem with the papers.

Boy. Some secretary is going to get chewed out over this. That is a big no-no. You better get a call first thing Monday morning. Tell him you are not paying for those particular papers. You should get at least $300 off of your bill for that little mistake.

as a former legal secretary, i can tell you, OMG, my former boss would have fired me on the spot for that. that is such a huge violation of client confidentiality, i...wow...just...wow. please, if your attorney doesn't call you back FIRST THING in the morning, call him back until you get to speak with him directly. a mistake like this needs to be taken care of ASAP.

thanks all for confirming that I'm not totally crazy in being royally po'd about this. For all the money I've turned over to this lawyer for a retainer, i expect better service.

Not to mention the fact that, except for ss#'s, there's enough information in these papers to steal an identity.

I just hope it was a mix-up between 2 couples, and not a bunch that all got put in the wrong envelopes.

That is pretty bad, a similar thing happened to me 14 years ago. When we moved here I was looking over my medical records before giving them to my new doctor and saw that it said "mother was a smoker." I never smoked a day in my life, turns out I got another woman's prenatal records. What a horrible mistake that was. Glad I didn't read anything too private. Anyway, couldn't really do much since it was the military, but I always felt bad for reading what I did (even if it was a very little) about the other woman. I think with privacy issues, things have gotten a lot more strict (and well they should) over the last 14 years. I agree no way I'd pay for them to fix it. Best of luck to you...

Jazzielady ~ I am so sorry this happened to you. Divorce is mentally and emotionally draining enough without having this added stress in the mix. What did you lawyer have to say about this??
