This is going to be an interesting poll today since we have different generations of people on The DIS. Younger people probably never tried it. Middle-age to my age people may have tried it at some point in their life. Our older/senior people, probably almost all tried it, and some may even still eat it today (my mom does). For those that don’t know… the liver used for liver and onions comes from a cow - it is beef liver. It’s considered a superfood because it contains 10 to 100 times more nutrition than muscle meats. So give us your review of liver and onions today…….

Have you had liver and onions in your lifetime?
If yes….. what is your opinion of it?
Do you eat it today?
(multiple-choice)

For Me……. My mom is a big fan of liver and onions and she made it relatively often when I was a kid. I didn’t love it, but I didn’t hate it either. I never made it after I moved out of my home because my husband can’t stand it, so I haven’t eaten liver and onions for over 30 years. At this point in my life, I probably wouldn’t like it anymore because it is an acquired taste. So when I voted, I voted I somewhat like it, since I didn’t hate it when I did actually eat it.

DD and I love beef liver; DH and DS don't care for it, and DH dislikes the smell. I make it often on nights when DH is eating elsewhere. I grew up eating it braised in a red-wine glaze, so that's the way I cook it, too. I also also order it in restaurants when I'm in the mood for it.

I ate absolutely rafts of it when I was pregnant and needing iron. DD also likes the benefit of all that iron. Liver is quite lean and very tasty when properly prepared.

PS: My DH is funny about this, because he won't eat liver when it's obviously liver, but will eat it in things he liked before he realized they contained it. For instance, he loves Braunschweiger. He's from a German immigrant family, grew up eating Braunschweiger, and always liked it. I'm from an Irish immigrant family, and we had a different name for it: Liver Loaf. He was horrified the first time he heard me say so. Same situation for Rice Dressing (aka Dirty Rice). I introduced him to it in New Orleans, he loved it, and he still does, but he won't watch me cook it because he doesn't like being reminded that there are chicken livers in it. (My MIL moved in with her new in-laws for a couple of years after her marriage and lived in this very German-influenced city all her life. Her new family introduced her to Braunschweiger and she liked it fine, until I accidentally burst the German-language bubble some 40 years later. I don't think she ever ate it again.)

Certainly a senior here. I've had it in my younger years but probably not in past 50 or more years. I don't recall my mom making it at home but rather ordering it in restaurants once in a while back then. I guess I liked it some as I know I had it more than once. But not in ages.

OMG ❤️❤️❤️ I have loved this since I was a kid !!! My neighbor would butcher and give me fresh liver ( joy) I would only eat homemade liver & onions with gravy & rice it mashed potatoes!!!! I ate it at least once a month all through adulthood UNTIL I got sick from a batch and have not ate it since !! It’s been several years so I may try baking it again !! I could use the iron !!! Absolutely love this !!! My kids were so so on eating it one liked it and one did not - if I recall correctly my sister hated it but rest of family loved it ! Most people I know ( I’m in my late 50) don’t care for it

It's edible, I couldn't tell you when the last time I had it was.

I've had liver a few times in my life when I was pregnant. I was attempting to eat healthy foods so that I could have a healthy baby. But I haven't had it since then. I don't plan to ever eat it again.

One of the few food that is a 🤢🤮 for me....I do make it every once in a while for DH, who loves it. Just preparing it though makes me a bit green. that smell.
I just can't stand liver of any kind, even like fried chicken livers, which Daddy use to love to make.

I like it, DH somewhat likes it.

When I was pregnant we had liver and onions once every other week because of the folic acid in the meal. I’ve eaten it in restaurants!

My mother would cook it when I was a kid.
Hate it!!
Haven't had it since I was very young. Never cooked it. Tastes bad, looks bad, smells bad.

My parents made me taste it once when I was little. Blech!

I made liver dog biscuits once, around 25 years ago. Not only did they smell bad when I was making them... the liver farts after the dog ate them were worse!

We ate it as a kid before we knew what it was. Mom just said it was beef. When a cousin saw what we had for dinner she went - "liver eww". That stopped us from eating it. I got back into cooking it once getting into Paleo cookbooks. They have a good pate recipe that it's based off of. Coincidently I just made it this week

Adding I only like chicken livers now and only from specific places. I never order it at restaurants though only making it at home.

I think I tried it once. My father loved it. My mother did not. She cooked it for him, but no one else in the family ate it. Have never had a desire to try it as an adult.

I'm solidly GenX but I have never had it. My mom never made it although she made plenty of other things I don't eat anymore.

In 4th grade, we did some sort of science lab that involved cooking liver on a hot plate. It smelled so terrible, I've never eaten liver ever.

Also, when I had my first job out of college, the cafeteria served Liver and Onions every other Wednesday. Several of the older employees in my department got very excited about Liver and Onions Day, but... ugh, the smell!

Had it, don’t like it. DH loves it so orders it at a restaurant sometimes.
