Hi!

Wondering if anyone has done this and has any recommendations? Right now we have a treadmill that rarely gets used in our bedroom. Anytime someone uses it the entire floor shakes and they have the TV blasting, etc. Even the dog tends to get freaked out. DH expressed an interest in an stationary bike, but I don't want another peice of equipment in the house.

We have one side of the garage which we just use for storing stuff. I was thinking of cleaning that up and brining the treadmill down there. Maybe then adding a bike. Has anyone done this? I am in CA, so it isn't like the garage is excessively cold. Is there something else I should think about before doing so? What have you done to make it work? And...do you use the equipment any more or less?

Thanks!

I have a spare room in my house that is dedicated to the workout equipment but I with where you are, I would think about the heat in the summer. I am in Florida so that is a real concern with us.

Two concerns: One is that moisture from rain/humidity can cause rusting. Our garage is dry but the air is damp is the humid summers here and I have seen tools corrode. The other concern is the unforgiving concrete floor. You can really wreck your legs by exercising on it so if you do make a home gym out there, avoid doing any impact exercises like running in place or jumping rope.

I set up a home gym in my shed. It has electric, cable, etc. We did put drywall up and insulated it, and during the winter I put a portable heater out there and keep on the lowest setting for the equipment. In the summer, I put an air conditioner in the window but only turn it on about two hours before I exercise and then turn it off when I am done.
I have a treadmill, elliptical, recumbant bike, hand weights and a punching bag. You will love having your own gym!!!

We set up part of our garage as a gym area. We have the Bowflex, elliptical, bike trainer and Bosu out there as well as some hand weights and the yoga ball. We do any higher impact exercises (jumping jacks, rope, etc) in a little used corner of our living room to avoid the concrete issue. We are in south GA so it usually doesn't get too cold in the winter (until this year!) but it gets up there in the summer. I have a large floor fan that I use in the warmer months. Last year that worked for me all year except for July/August when the humidity was ridiculous. I find that I work out a lot more when I can do it at home instead of having to pack everything and everyone up and head to the gym.

Thank you all so much. Thinking of a good quality mat underneath the equipment. And a large fan might help if needed. I might be cleaning out the garage this weekend...good motivation! Thank you all!
