seattle

just keep in mind that the “Vancouver to Victoria” ferry is misleading, as it’s actually Tsawwassen to Swartz Bay, with Tsawwassen being about 30 min south of Vancouver and Swartz Bay being about an hour bus ride from downtown Victoria. The clipper is definitely more convenient.

BC Ferries has so many different ferries I can't even keep them straight. I saw one of their tiny car ferries once and I don't think it could take more than 5 cars. I think a few do actually start in Vancouver. On my visits in the 80s I remember using the ferry at Nainamo, which is way north of Victoria. I think it might have just been just for the drive.

I understood that the ferries aren't running now. However, my thinking was that the various ship terminals aren't terribly close to this particular "event". At least the Victoria Clipper and main cruise ship terminals are in what used to be an industrial part of town.

The international ferries aren't running because the Canadian border is still closed to tourists.

Oh, my advice there was to YOU if you were thinking of coming THIS year. We don’t believe the border will be open/ships will be running until the fall. I work in the maritime industry so we’re in pretty close communication with these guys. Tourism in general in the PNW is rather screwed.

I'd be very flexible. And of course the big deal is that the border is mostly closed with only hints of when it might reopen.

And non-tourists. Many of my friends here in Washington have family in BC and can't see them. They *just* announced that they're easing regulations so that US citizens with family in BC can cross the border... but they have to quarantine for two weeks, which isn't practical for most people. Even when I'm allowed to reopen my business in Washington's "Phase 3", the border closure will still dramatically affect us in the tourism sector. 2020 can suck it.

Huh. Certain people were quite fine and dandy when protesters showed up with assault rifles in Michigan. There is an article within the one you posted stating there is little to no evidence that group was involved at all.
True. I thought those clowns in Michigan were pretty silly, and probably hurt their cause...whatever their cause was.

The article on Seattle I posted was from the New York Times, so naturally they would not mention Antifa carrying weapons and would cast doubt on the idea. However there are pictures of guys with assault rifles in some other news stories.

There is an article in NYT about people carrying guns and promoting violence during demonstrations. They were not a part of antifa though but rather a group called the boogalos. I'll check and see if I can find it for you.

Here's the link to the full article:

and here is an excerpt in case someone cannot read it in full:

"In Las Vegas, the complaint filed in U.S. District Court said the three suspects called themselves members of the “boogaloo,” which is described as a far-right movement “to signify a coming civil war and/or fall of civilization.”
At an initial protest, the three strapped on bulletproof vests, grabbed their rifles and waded into the crowd, hoping to provoke clashes between protesters and the police, according to court papers. One taunted police officers, yelling in their faces, while a second chided protesters “that peaceful protests don’t accomplish anything and they needed to be violent,” the complaint said.

When that failed, they plotted to blow up an electric substation along the route of the demonstration in the hope that would prompt more violence between police and protesters, according to the complaint. They were arrested after preparing Molotov cocktails from gasoline and lemonade bottles before a march.

Robert M. Drascovich Jr., an attorney for one of the accused, Stephen T. Parshall, 35, said his client denied all the charges.

Individuals associated with the boogaloo movement have been out in force at countless demonstrations in the past few years, clad in their distinctive combat dress and armed with rifles. They often claim that they appear armed in public to underscore their commitment to Second Amendment rights, or to protect local businesses.
But online, boogaloo discussion groups overflow with racist statements and threats to exploit any unrest to spark a race war that will bring about a new government system.

In Denver, police seized a small arsenal including three assault rifles, numerous magazines, several bullet proof vests and other military paraphernalia from the car trunk of a self-professed “boogaloo” adherent headed toward a protest, a man who had previously live-streamed his own support for armed confrontations with police."

The homeless stole their food so they took to Twitter asking for donations of vegan meals, fruits and nuts.

They've also demanded that all prisoners be released from prison. And they've set up their own pseudo-police/security force, which searches & frisks people going into their new 'country' (since they've declared that they're no longer part of the US).

There's no doubt that reports of firearms being carried in this area of Seattle are real. It would be legal since Washington is an open carry state where people can legally carry loaded weapons without a carry permit as long as they're not concealed and they're not displayed in a threatening manner. However, it's rather difficult to ascertain if anyone carrying firearms is associated with any particular group.

In the PNW whenever there are protests or demonstration, there have often been firearms displayed. Shootings have been rare though. But there have been fistfights, baseball bats, batons, and pepper spray. You'l also get guys like this joker who had his guns confiscated under Oregon's recent red flag law:

He returned home Tuesday from the VA hospital and maintains he never planned to hurt or maim other people. But he understands why he alarmed police.
“I looked unhinged. I looked dangerous and have the training to be dangerous,” said Kohfield, who lives with his father in Canby and receives disability payments for physical and psychological injuries he sustained during two tours of duty in Iraq.
By leveling vicious warnings, Kohfield said, he hoped to deter others from causing physical harm.
“I figured that the key to de-escalating the situation was to not be the most violent person in the room,” he said. “It was to be the scariest person in the room.”

There's no reason to cancel, even if you're thinking of flying into Sea-Tac now. It's 15+ miles away from downtown.
Is the Chiuly garden open. We would stay a night in Seattle to see that before heading to tour Olympic

Enjoy your trip! We spent a few days around Olympic National Park in Sept.
Olympic National Park is extremely diverse though. There's the shoreline portion that could easily be a national seashore on its own. Then the big interior section with rainforests, hills, and even glaciers. I found it fascinating that there were glaciers at that low an altitude, primarily because there's just so much precipitation that they rebuild.

I liked the hot springs. Not the backcountry ones, but the resort where they pipe in natural hot spring water into their pools.

We are thinking of flying into Seattle in August and touring the Olympic Penninsula. We wouldn’t cancel due to protests.
I would change my plans. It's not exactly my idea of a fun or relaxing experience. 😉

And? As bcla points out, it’s an open carry state and perfectly legal to do. I’d like to know why it was fine in Michigan but it’s a very bad, terrible thing when it happens in Seattle. (Not asking you personally, I don’t get the vibe from you that you think either was a good idea.) I would think if a person was okay with one they would have to be okay with the other.
