Ironic, isn't it? This group is protesting the armed police but will defend themselves with guns. So there will be no police in CHAZ but there will be people armed.

I also find the building of a wall ironic. And patrolling it with armed people.

Seriously though. If the police show up to take back the police station, I don't think they're going to end up fighting back with guns. This is just a sideshow.

Not quite the same, but this reminds me of the 2006-2008 tree sit-in outside California Memorial Stadium at UC Berkeley. They were protesting the planned removal of several trees in order to build a new athletic center next to the stadium. The best known of the sit-in protesters were one Zachary Running Wolf and someone who called herself "Dumpster Muffin". It was especially bizarre when visiting fans would come and see what was going on. I remember when the Tennessee fans were there at the start of the season, they were taking plenty of pictures.

In that case it ended with a crew setting up scaffolding around a tree that arborists had already determined was damaged to the point where it needed to be removed. I saw a live stream of them trimming the branches as the last of the tree sitters went higher and higher. The UC Berkeley Chief of Police was there in a cherry picker trying to talk the last guy into going into the basket. Eventually he had nowhere to go and gave up.

Seattle PD walking back claims that business owners were extorted. The claim originated on a conservative blog, and as we saw with Amy Cooper, people lie.

I got nothing but a silly paywall from the newspaper, so all I could read was that no police reports had been filed.

That doesn't surprise me. If there were armed people trying to extort you, and police had been completely withdrawn from the area -- would YOU file a police report???

Obviously we're a little early in the festivities to really know what's going on, but I sure would NOT take no police reports to mean anything at all in this situation.

Are you always the optimist? Or selectively optimistic?

That was a totally different situation...hundreds of miles away in a different state...and 14 years ago.

It was still a sideshow and I saw if firsthand every time I went watch football at that stadium.

Don't get us started, BC! You are wandering into dangerous territory!

Just getting started. I had something great but I don't want to get any points for it. Well - remember that the acronym can also end in CH, and there are a lot of words that can fit that, including one that describes a dog.

Since you aren't from Seattle, you can't appreciate how absolutely ridiculous it would be for residents of Capitol Hill to extort anyone. Think of the most hippie, LGBTQ, pro-marijuana area you can think of in your city. Are they high on the list of areas you would equate with extortion? I didn't hit the paywall, and I normally do so here is a copy & paste

Police walk back report that Capitol Hill protesters extorted businesses
The Seattle Police Department walked back its claim, widely repeated in the news media, that denizens of the Capitol Hill Autonomous Zone are extorting businesses.

"That has not happened affirmatively," Seattle Police Chief Carmen Best in a news conference Thursday afternoon, adding that the police department had based earlier claims on anecdotal reports, including in the news and on social media. "We haven't had any formal reports of this occurring."

That contradicts earlier statements from the police.

In a news conference Wednesday, Assistant Seattle Police Chief Deanna Nollette said police have heard from Capitol Hill community members that some protesters have asked business owners to pay a fee to operate in a roughly six-block area around the precinct. Best repeated the claim in a video address to officers Thursday morning.

The police narrative rang false to many in the Capitol Hill business community. Restaurant owners said they hadn't heard any reports of extortion in the Autonomous Zone. On the contrary: Sales are strong and the increase in walk-up business is cutting down on delivery costs.
"This protest has not hurt us at all," said Bok a Bok Chicken co-owner Brian O'Connor. When he came to the Autonomous Zone Wednesday, rather than extortion, he said he was met with an offer of a free bagel-and-cheese sandwich.

The claim seems to have originated on conservative blog The Post Millennial, in an article written by former Seattle City Council candidate Ari Hoffman. The article quoted unnamed police officers who alleged protesters were extorting businesses for protection money.
Hoffman did not respond to questions about his sourcing. The claim was later repeated by a commenter under the name "Marcus S." on the Capitol Hill Seattle blog, and in a tweet by Andy Ngo, editor-at-large of The Post Millennial.

Apart from those sources, Christina Arrington, who heads the Capitol Hill branch of the Greater Seattle Business Association, said she has had "no other indications that this is taking place." The GSBA "found no evidence of this occurring," the group tweeted, based on conversations with area business.
The Seattle Times, among other local news outlets, repeated Nollette's claims that the police had received reports of extortion from community members.

And people wonder why Eastern Washington wants to secede from Washington.

When they find out their taxes would have to double in order to maintain services they would change their minds fast. Whitman County residents get back $4.81 in state spending for every dollar they send to Olympia.

Man, the things colleges do when their football teams are terrible!

Cal had a #2 ranking that season. Of course it all fell apart when the starting QB sprained his ankle. Still had a chance to go #1 the next week when LSU lost, but the backup QB brain farted and took a sack. They were down 3, in FG range, but with no timeouts and time running down.

Some of the tree sitters said it was karma.

Yes, OP is looking at next year. Currently all international ferry routes from WA to Canada are suspended. If YOU are looking at this year, please keep that in mind. The Coho (Port Angeles to Victoria) ferry announced they will not reopen this year because of COVID. Hopefully they do next year, since they are very important to the Port Angeles economy. British Columbia is saying they are considering keeping the border closed throughout the fall.
It's not up to BC - border control is federal jurisdiction. Right now the entire Canadian border is closed to all modes of traffic - indefinitely. Should the government choose to open them, provinces will not be able to override that decision. Whether or not the ferry service (which is provincial jurisdiction) runs may be another matter.

Oh sorry my comment is about the water border between BC and WA specifically. Transport Canada has informed us that after June 30, vessels will be beholden to provincial regulations, not federal ones.

Here's what was actually said in the news article you can't open:

Your spin was good given you couldn't read the whole article but unfortunately the facts say otherwise;)

Hopemax kindly did a copy and paste above a while ago, so I read it.

In these kinds of situations, things are so politically-charged than none of us actually know what the "facts" are.

Hopefully, whatever the objective is, the situation will be resolved in a reasonable amount of time with nobody getting hurt.

Unless I am misunderstanding what I've been reading, it isn't the residents of Capitol Hill who are extorting anyone - it's the leaders of CHAZ who are extorting the "hippie, LGBTQ, pro-marijuana" folks who are kind of stuck in that occupied territory.

It wouldn't surprise me if those folks didn't report any attempt at extortion to the Seattle police. I suspect they aren't exactly pro-police at the moment.

Assistant Chief Nollette said people had called in saying they were being asked to pay to stay in zone.. She also was quite critical of the decision to leave the precinct. And now the department says it never happened. Maybe some political pressure? It's quite amazing to see this kind of thing happening in the U.S. in 2020.

I hope this is just a peaceful occupation with residents able to come and go as they please. It's those guys with guns guarding the boarder that would make me nervous if I lived there or had a business within the walls of CHAZ.

That's what happens when you start to respond to a post and then get up to clean the kitchen.; multi-tasking is only so good but time never stops:D.
Yes, time will tell when all is said and done.

Isn't commercial traffic still allowed?

For shipping purposes only. Not commercial traffic carrying passengers. There is currently no non-essential entry into Canada by foreign nationals of any country.
I get that. I'm just saying you made it sound like the border was completely closed.

I'm wondering how they're handing this lack of traffic. I checked and some of the non-truck entry points are still open.
