Scared to ride Mission Space-Should i be?

The most important thing about Mission Space is, even if the single rider line is less than 5 minutes, *do not* ride it more than a few times in a row. I can ride anything and feel absolutely no ill effects, but after riding Space 5 or 6 times in a row, I felt dizzy for the rest of the evening. It is a very fun ride, relatively tame in small doses, but many trips without a break will definitely cause problems.

Honestly, in objective terms, I don't find Space to be that difficult for people to ride. Obviously the extremely claustrophobic shouldn't ride, but my claustrophobic mother had no issue riding it several times.

There are better rides to start with, like Body Wars / Star Tours, Splash and BTMRR, but it's probably easier than the Tower and RnR.

First, go to Magic Kingdom. There's this place there called Toon Town. In Toon Town is a ride called Goofy's Barn Stormer. Ride it. If you're okay after that, go to Big Thunder Mountain. Ride that. If you're okay after Thunder Mountain, then do Splash Mountain. If you're okay after these 3, you should be ready for Mission Space. This is how we progressed with my 4 year old boy. He responded very well. Baby steps.

After all the hoopla over Mission Space (read the 2 page preparation check list in the Unofficial Guide), I thought I would surely die on the ride. In reality though, the ride is so well designed that I never had the sensation that I was spinning. If you watch the screen in front of you, you're so involved in the experience that you just feel like you're taking a ride through space. It's really cool, and I'm glad I wasn't scared off by all the naysayers.

I rode it twice in Oct '03. The first time I was fine. The second, I made the mistake of looking over at my kids to see how they were doing. And we'd just eaten at Chef Mickey's. I came THIS close to booting once we got off.

If I had, I'd have immediately gotten back in line. Any ride that can make me boot deserves my respect.

Damn, I just realize we're leaving the day you arrive, I could have been there for support.

Heh -- I'm terrified of coasters (haven't even tried Big Thunder Mtn or Splash Mountain -- I only do coasters with giant contraptions holding me in!) and I was just fine with Mission Space.

The main two things to be concerned about: Are you claustrophobic? Because the room you walk into and sit down in gets considerably smaller. Are you fine with spinning rides? (tilt a whirl, etc.) If you're fine with them, you will probably be fine with MS -- not that it feels like the same kind of spinning, but because your body is already not oversensitive to motion sickness.

If you're claustrophobic and get dizzy on the teacups, I'd say skip it.

There's nothing "frightening" about the ride except the anticipation that it will be too physically demanding.

And as somebody said upthread -- when it feels like you can't breathe, breathe! What happens is you hold your breath in reaction to the motion. If you tell yourself to breathe, you can.

Thanks agian for the ideas to help me pump myself up to ride this ride.Belive me i wish someone was there to give me more support ,because my wife is goin to beat me if i dont get on this ride ....lol :rotfl2: I dont think i will have issues with the roller coster rides(i never rode a coster :sad2: ) For some weird reason this ride gets me all nervous, but i will be getting on :moped:

I haven’t ridden Mission Space because I am very prone to motion sickness and this one ride is not going to ruin a day at Epcot for me.

My husband is also a “wimp” as far as thrill rides go - and that’s ok with me. He doesn’t press me to ride the twirly rides that will make me hurl and I don’t press him to ride things that will scare him. He has worked up to Splash Mountain and loved it and rode Star Tours and Dinosaur and they were both too rough. He rode Tower of Terror one time and was terrified. He has not, nor will he ever, ride Rock n’ Roller Coaster, Space Mountain or Expedition Everest. Before we had our little ones, he would stand in line with me and use the exit just before boarding the ride. Now, he stays off with the kids while I ride.

Mission Space is our favorite ride in all of Disney.
I say suck it up and just do it, then turn around and do it again.

Spider-Man is nothing compared to MS. I think SM is more fun, but totally easier on the system than any thrill ride, MS included.

MS isn't jerky (like Back to the Future) and you don't feel like you're spinning, because you are staring at a little TV screen in front of you. There really isn't any other ride anywhere like it.

I had a hard time with MS. Felt like I couldn't breathe during the take-off and then just funky for an hour or two. No nausea, just REALLY funky and weak. A few months later I got dragged on again, and did fine.

It is a great ride! (If it doesn't make you all woozy.)

I wouldn't do it as my first thrill ride. For a first thrill ride, I'd do a weenie-thrill like Splash Mountain. Then Tower of Terror. Then Mission Space. That way, if MS makes you all funky, you won't worry that other rides will do that to you, too.

Good Luck with your thrills, and like MattsDragon said, suck it up, be a man, and ride the rides! (It'll be cool.)

The ride is exactly the same as it was on day one. No more intense; no less.

Just curious, were you ever on it before the official opening?

I rode it 52 times before August 15th, 2003. I have ridden it 145 times total.

I'm a CM there now, and have spoken with several folks who were on the Test and Adjust crew, as well as with several of the maintenance staff. They all agree that the ride has not been changed at all.

I'm 27 and i find mission space to be almost tomuch for me. If the ride was any longer i would definatly throwup. but it stops just at the right time.

I feel its to extreem for disney and it was a big over shot in that department and alienates a lot of guests. The imagineers know they messed up there and fixed that problem with everest where it's a nice blend for all to enjoy.

something i did notice is that the old ablatros footage from mission to mars at magic kingdom is seen on one of the control screens in the que for mission space.

I totally disagree, Mission Space is the best ride Disney has going. :cool1:

About how long is the ride? I read that it's about 5 and a half minutes, but does that include the preshow or is that the ride itself?

I don't agree that this ride is extreme it depends on what kind of rides you like. I don't like TOT, have ridden at least five times, but I won't go on anymore, but I really like MS. Extreme to so people is nothing to others, I love the tea cups!

Personally I love the roller coasters and have never felt ill on one. The mission space ride just makes me feel ill for the rest of the day the only other ride that I have ever felt this way on is back to the future. I have no desire to ride either of those rides again. Mission to space would be fun if I didn't feel so lousy after. I would ride at least once but I agree with the poster who said try it on your way out of the park.

Don't think of Mission:Space as a thrill ride, like Rock n' Roller Coaster or Tower of Terror. Think of Mission:Space as the Mad Tea Party ("the teacups") on steroids. With barf bags.

I LOVE thrill rides. The faster and harder and higher and loopier the coaster, the better. But constant spinning makes me queasy and too dizzy. I'm glad I did Mission:Space, but I felt woozy for maybe an hour afterwards. Then again, my 72 year old father, who was in between chemotherapy treatments, chewed it up and spit it out and bought a t-shirt.

OK...My DH is a MAJOR WIMP, and refused to ride this with me and my 11 yr old DD. We loved it, but love most thrill rides anyway. We jumped off felt fine ran and got back in line since was only about a 5 minute wait at the time. We got off the second time not really feeling sick, but knowing we were not going to jump back in line for a 3rd time in a row. But we did go back on our last day at WDW to get one last ride in and when we picked up our fast pass...didn't realize it was during our dinner ressie...so we handed them off to a couple who were unable to even get a fast pass because they had already covered the mich. for the night. They were sure happy to meet us...they were only going to be in the park the one day and didn't want to miss out! Not to mention this was their first trip to WDW.

My advice...Skip Breakfast, go early in the morning and just in case dont make any plans for lunch...you may not feel like eating.
The people in the capsaul next to us didn't handle the ride so well (our second time). Just remember this ride comes with barf bags...

If you follow the directions about keeping your head back, eyes focused on the screen and not looking around you will be fine.

I was really nervous before riding it. I love thrill rides, but simulators and spinning rides make me sick. I was more nervous about getting sick than the ride itself. The worst part was "lift off" and that only lasted a few seconds. That made me feel a bit queasy, but I'm not sure if it was the ride or because I had myself so worked up before the ride! Right as I was telling DH, "OMG I'm going to be sick," the lift off part was over and the rest of the ride was fine and didn't bother me at all (star tours and body wars always made me feel sick). I didn't feel sick at all afterwards.

Lmao :rotfl2: I think MS will chew me up and spit me out! :stir:
