DIS Dads Rust Belt Road Trip (2 UPDATES--1/18)

Dads of the DIS talk about life, bacon, Disney, bacon, kids, bacon, cars, bacon, family life, and lots of other fun stuff! And beer. And bacon.
That's right--on this drive, we would be going back in time.

There's a lot of time travel in this TR....didn't we just have some with that carousel in the last chapter?

Mrs. Knowitall will have to comment and explain when exactly she got sick of hearing this joke on the trip, since we crossed the time zone line a few times.

My guess would be "the first time". Yep, that's what I'm going with.

At this point, I need to stop and praise Mrs. Knowitall for her bargain shopping.

My word, you're trying to score points again?! :sad2:

A few months earlier, she had received a groupon offer for a year's membership at the Delaware Natural History Museum--$27 for the year. This museum is--how can I say this delicately?--crappy.

I've been there! Once. :rolleyes1

You'd get more value from $27 worth of whoopie cushions.

Is this groupon still available? I'm definitely interested.

However, Julie read the small print.

Man, she's got good eyes.

So, she bought the membership for the express purpose if using it there and saving us about $50 on the admission. And yes, I married way, way out of my league.

Julie, congrats on the great discount. Mark, congrats too. ;)

So: at long last, we entered the musuem. And we immediately decided to send Sarah to the moon. Just because we could.

"To the moon Alice!"

I never realized that midwest cows were so....shiny.

Statler: If a man who rides a horse is called a cowboy, what do you call a man who rides a cow?
Waldorf: Stupid.

Any TR that includes Statler and Waldorf quotes deserves a :worship:

Scotty got in and felt the need...the need for speed!

And here I thought you were going to interchange "seed" for "speed". :headache:

Because, you know, it happens.

What's that? Fuel?

When I see a display like that, I always wonder who the poor dope was that got the job of having to sculpt a replica of poop. How does one go about doing that?

Where's Mike Rowe when you need him?

We found another room playing off the energy theme to show different ways of producing energy, or detailing potential vs. kinetic energy. The central display was a Rube Goldberg-type device that used various mechanics to shoot billiard balls through all sorts of channels and chutes. It was cooler than it sounds from my description. Either that, or I'm just a big nerd.

:rolleyes1

The sub exhibit is massive, and excellent. It seems to go for miles, giving a great sense of the naval theater of the war. I wish we'd had more time to explore it. Touring the sub is an extra cost, but we decided to go for it. It was worth it.

You can tour the USS Torsk in the Baltimore harbor. Not a guided tour, but there's no time limit.

Unfortunately, it was unreliable technology, and they believe at least 2 German U-boats were sunk by their own torpedoes. :scared1:

"You arrogant a**. You've killed us!" (wrong nationality, but you get the idea.)

It was getting close to lunchtime now, but we still had time to check out the electricity and magnetism exhibits.

IMG_9666.jpg

"Now fulfill your destiny and take your father's place at my side!"

Coming Up Next: Planes, Trains & Automobiles. And instant ice cream. And silly hats.

You saw John Candy and Steve Martin?

That's right--on this drive, we would be going back in time.
Your van has a Flux Capacitor? Cool!

Mrs. Knowitall will have to comment and explain when exactly she got sick of hearing this joke on the trip, since we crossed the time zone line a few times.
Well, if she's anything like me, should have never gotten sick of it!

I doubt she's anything like me, however.

Sometimes the early bird only gets a worm, but sometimes he scores and gets the cheap parking spot! :woohoo:
You know what the early worm gets? Eaten.

At this point, I need to stop and praise Mrs. Knowitall for her bargain shopping.
Nice score, Julie!:thumbsup2

You'd get more value from $27 worth of whoopie cushions.
Hmmmm.....:scratchin

If FreezinRafiki and afwdwfan have fallen asleep up to this point, they'll want to wake up for this part. One of the first exhibits we checked out was on American farming.
zz..huh? wha? Mark's saying something interesting? OK, I'l get up...

Statler: If a man who rides a horse is called a cowboy, what do you call a man who rides a cow?
Waldorf: Stupid.
:rotfl2::rotfl::lmao:

(I'm only laughing on the outside. I've tried it. FYI: Cows don't like it)

They had a couple of farm tractors in the room, and the kids had a great time climbing all over them. The giant combine was set up in front of a movie screen that made it look like you were harvesting a field. Scotty got in and felt the need...the need for speed!
There's a bomb on the combine! Don't let it drop below 50 mph!

Because, you know, it happens.
I'm doing it begrudgingly because no actual contest has been announced, but "Forrest Gump"

When I see a display like that, I always wonder who the poor dope was that got the job of having to sculpt a replica of poop. How does one go about doing that?
Who said it was fake?

No doubt, farming is very glamorous. Right, guys?
Chicks dig farmer tans. How do you think I woo'd Bambi?

Either that, or I'm just a big nerd.
Is there a smiley that looks like he really wants to say something, but isn't? I want to put that one right here.

Behold the U-505. This is an actual German U-boat from World War II that was captured by the U.S.S. Chatelain in June of 1944.
Did you get down by the cafeteria bathrooms and see the pictures of them bringing the sub in from Lake Michigan? Those are pretty cool.

The sub exhibit is massive, and excellent. It seems to go for miles, giving a great sense of the naval theater of the war. I wish we'd had more time to explore it. Touring the sub is an extra cost, but we decided to go for it. It was worth it. The tour was timed, and the guide had a strict script to follow that coincided with a soundtrack that played inside the sub. While our tour guide was a little mechanical and O-VER-E-NUN-CI-AT-ED every word, the story was fascinating. Being a sucker for WWII, military history, and submarines, I ate up every detail.
Agreed! I need to get back there and take the add on tour some time!

Julie wanted one to use at home, although I'm not entirely sure what purpose she had in mind.
Awesomest chandelier ever?
I tried to see if I could get this as a replacement, but I didn't bring my hand saw with me.
You know who didn't forget his hand saw? The guy that took your converter.

What? Too soon?

With that, it was time for lunch, so I'll stop here. 3 guesses as to what was on the menu.
Do "Peanut", "Butter", and "Jelly" count as all 3 guesses?

Warning: Science In Progress

Oooooooo… now you have my attention

Normally, we would have gotten up at the butt-crack of dawn in order to get to our destination

:lmao:
That’s the first time I’ve heard that particular enhancement to a well worn cliché

…but we had something working in our favor: the Eastern Time Zone. That's right--on this drive, we would be going back in time.

“You're going to try time traveling in this rustbucket?”

Our destination on this not-so-fine morning was the Chicago Museum of Science & Industry, located in Hyde Park on the infamous South Side of the city.

This… is somewhere I r-e-a-l-l-y want to go sometime (imagine that).

At this point, I need to stop and praise Mrs. Knowitall for her bargain shopping.

If she’s anything like my lovely, she needs praising just for not kicking you out of the house.

You'd get more value from $27 worth of whoopie cushions.

Some how or other I can see this line cropping up on a regular bases in the DDC threads from this point forward.
:lmao:

And yes, I married way, way out of my league.

Didn’t we all….

So: at long last, we entered the musuem. And we immediately decided to send Sarah to the moon. Just because we could.

“To the moon, Sarah!”
No… wait… shouldn’t that be “Alice”?
Oh heck, where’s my script?

Statler: If a man who rides a horse is called a cowboy, what do you call a man who rides a cow?
Waldorf: Stupid.

:lmao:
Ya’ gott’a love those two geezers.

made it look like you were harvesting a field. Scotty got in and felt the need...the need for speed!

Negative, Ghost Rider, the pattern is full.

The very existence of this display is hysterical. You young’ens just make it all the more classy.

The central display was a Rube Goldberg-type device that used various mechanics to shoot billiard balls through all sorts of channels and chutes. It was cooler than it sounds from my description. Either that, or I'm just a big nerd.

Ahhhhh… St. Rube. my other patron saint (right after Goofy). Oh and you may be a big nerd, but what’s wrong with that?

At that point, it was time for a special exhibit: way down in the basement of the museum lurks a sinister threat...

IMG_9645.jpg

Behold the U-505. This is an actual German U-boat from World War II that was captured by the U.S.S. Chatelain in June of 1944.

And THIS… is one of the reasons I r-e-a-l-l-y want to visit this place some time (bet y’all that have been reading my TR’s would never have guessed that one Ehhh?)

Touring the sub is an extra cost, but we decided to go for it. It was worth it. The tour was timed, and the guide had a strict script to follow that coincided with a soundtrack that played inside the sub.

This I did not know. Timed? I can’t linger :headache: No fair… they can’t do that… it’s… Oh, who am I kidding, I’ll just pay to go through it over again and I know it (and Tamara will just shake her head and patiently wait for me to go back around the fourth time).

Seriously, submarines are always cool. Period.

You’re preaching to the choir brother

Several retired U.S. Navy vets were on hand, and we spent a few minutes talking with one about the Nazi technology.

Cool! Bonus points… that’s almost like Disney Magic

I like this picture a lot.
Wonder… amazement… deep thought… the joy of discovery…
and all in the same image.

Nice work!

I remember this day!!! I was sitting at Wrigley Field watch the Cubs lose.....badly......again :headache:

Great update Captain and kudos to Mrs. Knowitall on the museum passes. :thumbsup2

The MSI is one of our family's favorite local attractions.

Never would I think about going to Chicago to learn about cows & farming. It must have been a DOT idea.

Great addition to the report Mark! You are correct that subs are cool :thumbsup2

Did you tell Scotty that girls find tractors sexy :lmao:

Oh, and I haven't seen that much crap in one place since......ugh it was the Colts game last week :headache:

Another great report, Mark! I think that the Museum of Science & Industry is the only building from the Chicago World's Fair that's still standing. They were supposed to tear them all down but they left that one up!

"Now fulfill your destiny and take your father's place at my side!"

Return of the Jedi! :thumbsup2 Can I tell you that the recent Star Wars commercials about the blue ray set made me do a head snap when I heard it first come on - I thought something new was coming out!

Great updates! You get two votes from me for parent of the year too! ;) Love Statler and Waldort - we can't wait for the Muppets movie to come out. Looks like a very cool museum!

but it sounds better when you say you're time-traveling.
Time travel makes everything sound better!:thumbsup2

You'd get more value from $27 worth of whoopie cushions.
Wow... just think of all the fun you could have with that many whoopie cushions.:lmao::rotfl2::rotfl:

However, Julie read the small print. And the small print said that this membership offered reciprocal membership to science museums all over the nation...including the Science & Industry Museum in Chicago. So, she bought the membership for the express purpose if using it there and saving us about $50 on the admission. And yes, I married way, way out of my league.
Great job, Juile, and I think that point has been well established by now, Mark.:lmao:

If FreezinRafiki and afwdwfan have fallen asleep up to this point,
Not asleep, just a few days behind...

One of the first exhibits we checked out was on American farming.
:thumbsup2:thumbsup2

Scotty immediately found a friend, which reminded me of a bit from the Muppet Show.

Hmmm.... That looks like something I saw this weekend.:rolleyes1

There was also a room detailing the science behind using cow manure for fuel.
The Native Americans have been burning manure for fuel for hundreds of years. This technology was actually invented by Chief Somewoodlandcreature. See, he's more famous than Sitting Bull.

No doubt, farming is very glamorous. Right, guys?
Glamorous isn't the word, but I really do enjoy doing it. Much more so than my "office job"

Either that, or I'm just a big nerd.
You are a big nerd, but I'd probably think it is cool too.:thumbsup2

Being a sucker for WWII, military history, and submarines, I ate up every detail.
Oh, yeah, that would be awesome!

Anyway, we all thought the sub tour was fantastic. Except for Scotty, who thought it was scary and walked through the entire sub with his hands over his ears.
I remember when I was probably about his age, we toured a sub and an aircraft carrier somewhere on the way home from Disney. I went on the tour, but I remember being scared too. Looking back it was cool, but I think I was afraid they'd sail out and fight in a war while we were on them or something.:lmao::rotfl2::rotfl:

We also found a helpful exhibit on catalytic converters.
How appropriate! :lmao::rotfl2::rotfl:

You definitely married out of your league there, Captain. Great job Julie on the membership. We've not been to the Museum of Science and Industry in too many years to count (I don't want to show my age by actually saying how many years...let's just say it was a lot). I think after we get back from Florida, it might be time to take a ride to the Museum.

I think if we lived in Chicago, our kids would be clamoring for a trip to the MSI every weekend. Great museum.

I'm going to guess that you had PBJ's for lunch. ;)

How did you know? Man, you're pretty sharp.

There's a lot of time travel in this TR....didn't we just have some with that carousel in the last chapter?

Indeed we did. I would never have guessed that the carousel would have had a flux capacitor installed as well.

My guess would be "the first time". Yep, that's what I'm going with.

:sad2: Some people just don't appreciate comic genius.

My word, you're trying to score points again?! :sad2:

Oh, come on. You're married. You know perfectly well that you can never have enough points. Mostly because we seem to lose them a lot more quickly than we pile them up.

I've been there! Once. :rolleyes1

And once was probably enough.

Is this groupon still available? I'm definitely interested.

Whoopie cushions are like marital "points". You can never have enough.

Julie, congrats on the great discount. Mark, congrats too. ;)

Thanks! :thumbsup2

"To the moon Alice!"

+1 :thumbsup2 for the Honeymooners.

I never realized that midwest cows were so....shiny.

You'd have to ask Barry or Andy about that. I'm sure Andy spends hours polishing his cattle.

Any TR that includes Statler and Waldorf quotes deserves a :worship:

:woohoo::cool1:

And here I thought you were going to interchange "seed" for "speed". :headache:

I wish I'd have thought of that. But then people would have accused me of trying to rip off Barry's schtick anyway. Can't win.

What's that? Fuel?

Exactly.

Where's Mike Rowe when you need him?

Doing blue jeans commercials, I guess. I can't remember the last time I saw a new episode of Dirty Jobs.

You can tour the USS Torsk in the Baltimore harbor. Not a guided tour, but there's no time limit.

I think I did that one many moons ago. It definitely would have been nice to spend more time in this sub.

"You arrogant a**. You've killed us!" (wrong nationality, but you get the idea.)

The Hunt for Red October. :thumbsup2

"Now fulfill your destiny and take your father's place at my side!"

That does look Emporer-esque, doesn't it?

You saw John Candy and Steve Martin?

Well, it's kind of hard to spot John Candy these days.

Your van has a Flux Capacitor? Cool!

Well, sure. I thought they were standard.

Well, if she's anything like me, should have never gotten sick of it!

I doubt she's anything like me, however.

Genius often goes unrecognized in its time.

zz..huh? wha? Mark's saying something interesting? OK, I'l get up...

No, not really. I don't think that's ever happened.

(I'm only laughing on the outside. I've tried it. FYI: Cows don't like it)

Well, that's good to know, in case I'm ever in that position.

There's a bomb on the combine! Don't let it drop below 50 mph!

Hopefully he's driving Andy's special souped-up combine.

I'm doing it begrudgingly because no actual contest has been announced, but "Forrest Gump"

+1 :thumbsup2

Who said it was fake?

Chicks dig farmer tans. How do you think I woo'd Bambi?

I figured she married you for your money.

Ok, maybe it was the farmer tan.

Is there a smiley that looks like he really wants to say something, but isn't? I want to put that one right here.

NOW you hold back? :confused3

Did you get down by the cafeteria bathrooms and see the pictures of them bringing the sub in from Lake Michigan? Those are pretty cool.

I did see those, actually. And yes, they were pretty cool. :thumbsup2

Agreed! I need to get back there and take the add on tour some time!

We need to go back and catch some things we missed as well. Should I call the Best Western?

You know who didn't forget his hand saw? The guy that took your converter.

What? Too soon?

:sad2:

Do "Peanut", "Butter", and "Jelly" count as all 3 guesses?

Sure. I would also have accepted "cheese balls".

Oooooooo… now you have my attention

Well, it's about time. I've been getting tired of your distractions in the back of the class.

:lmao:
That’s the first time I’ve heard that particular enhancement to a well worn cliché

I actually have to give credit to Barry for that one. I just ripped it of--er, borrowed it.

This… is somewhere I r-e-a-l-l-y want to go sometime (imagine that).

This museum is well worth the trip!

If she’s anything like my lovely, she needs praising just for not kicking you out of the house.

::yes:: But then she'd have to mow the lawn.

Some how or other I can see this line cropping up on a regular bases in the DDC threads from this point forward.

:woohoo::cool1::banana:

Ya’ gott’a love those two geezers.

Yes. Yes, you do. It's really not an option.

The very existence of this display is hysterical. You young’ens just make it all the more classy.

Yeah, we get that a lot, the way we class up a joint just by entering. :rolleyes1

Ahhhhh… St. Rube. my other patron saint (right after Goofy). Oh and you may be a big nerd, but what’s wrong with that?

Other than getting beat up regularly and having my lunch money stolen, forcing me to eat PB&J everyday?

And THIS… is one of the reasons I r-e-a-l-l-y want to visit this place some time (bet y’all that have been reading my TR’s would never have guessed that one Ehhh?)

Yeah, that sure came out of left field!

This I did not know. Timed? I can’t linger :headache: No fair… they can’t do that… it’s… Oh, who am I kidding, I’ll just pay to go through it over again and I know it (and Tamara will just shake her head and patiently wait for me to go back around the fourth time).

That was a bit of a downer. You couldn't explore it on your own. That would have been way cool.

Here's a tidbit for you: many of the men had bunks right over the engines. The room never got below 97 degrees. Also, one bathroom was used for storage, and they generally didn't take showers during their 2-month tours.

Cool! Bonus points… that’s almost like Disney Magic

We'll call it Nerd Magic. :wizard:

I like this picture a lot.
Wonder… amazement… deep thought… the joy of discovery…
and all in the same image.

Nice work!

Thanks Rob! I like it too. :goodvibes

I remember this day!!! I was sitting at Wrigley Field watch the Cubs lose.....badly......again :headache:

Sorry. :sad2: I remember exchanging FB messages that morning...sorry it didn't quite work out.

Great update Captain and kudos to Mrs. Knowitall on the museum passes. :thumbsup2

The MSI is one of our family's favorite local attractions.

Thanks! It is a great museum. I'm sure we would buy the membership if we lived there.

Never would I think about going to Chicago to learn about cows & farming. It must have been a DOT idea.

:mad::rotfl2:

So that's how it's gonna be, huh? Well, you've got it all wrong. If this was done by the DOT, the exhibit would still be under construction. :rotfl:

Great addition to the report Mark! You are correct that subs are cool :thumbsup2

Did you tell Scotty that girls find tractors sexy :lmao:

Oh, and I haven't seen that much crap in one place since......ugh it was the Colts game last week :headache:

I haven't told Scotty that yet. Mostly because I don't know if it works. Maybe Mrs. Knowitall can chime in.

And about the Colts... we always wondered what the backup plan was if Peyton Manning got hurt. Now we know...there was no backup plan.

Another great report, Mark! I think that the Museum of Science & Industry is the only building from the Chicago World's Fair that's still standing. They were supposed to tear them all down but they left that one up!

Thanks Chris! And you are correct. It's a cool building and they made good use of it.

+1 :thumbsup2 It is a cool museum. And I am very excited about the Muppets movie as well. I found a couple of early screening reviews that said they absolutely nailed it! :thumbsup2

Time travel makes everything sound better!:thumbsup2

That reminds me. I'm going to have you ask you about the logic of the time-zone line in Indiana...:sad2:

Wow... just think of all the fun you could have with that many whoopie cushions.:lmao::rotfl2::rotfl:

:woohoo: The mind boggles, doesn't it?

Great job, Juile, and I think that point has been well established by now, Mark.:lmao:

Still trying to earn points. Leave me be.

Not asleep, just a few days behind...

Hmmm.... That looks like something I saw this weekend.:rolleyes1

Is there something you need to tell us/ :confused3

The Native Americans have been burning manure for fuel for hundreds of years. This technology was actually invented by Chief Somewoodlandcreature. See, he's more famous than Sitting Bull.

Wow! Hard to believe he doesn't have his own Wikipedia page yet.

Glamorous isn't the word, but I really do enjoy doing it. Much more so than my "office job"

I can understand that. Sometimes I wish I could escape the office.

You are a big nerd, but I'd probably think it is cool too.:thumbsup2

Embrace your inner nerd. :thumbsup2

I did the same thing going through a firehouse. I was scared to death the sirens would go off while we were there.

Never would I think about going to Chicago to learn about cows & farming. It must have been a DOT idea.
And yet the Chicago Board of Trade is where ag prices are established... :confused3
I'm like you. Chicago just seems a little too "urban" for that kind of stuff.:lmao:

That reminds me. I'm going to have you ask you about the logic of the time-zone line in Indiana...:sad2:
Well, since political conversation is frowned upon in the DISboards, let me just say that there is no logic to it.:rolleyes1

Is there something you need to tell us/ :confused3
Not really... just that I got to see that movie this weekend. Only it was in 3D and it moved. :lmao::rotfl2:

Well, it's about time. I've been getting tired of your distractions in the back of the class.

So… you’re moving me up to the front where I can distract everyone more effectively?
But then she'd have to mow the lawn.

Good point… of course this tells me that the only things standing between me and life under a bridge are a set of skills that can be replaced by a single undocumented worker.

That’s a might troubling.
Other than getting beat up regularly and having my lunch money stolen, forcing me to eat PB&J everyday?

You mean that ain't normal?

Here's a tidbit for you: many of the men had bunks right over the engines. The room never got below 97 degrees. Also, one bathroom was used for storage, and they generally didn't take showers during their 2-month tours.

Cool! I’ve got an even more frightening tidbit… I knew most of that already
(I-R-Geek :sad2:)

Here, allow me to prove it beyond question with a randomly chosen test victim… errr… I mean subject…

I remember when I was probably about his age, we toured a sub and an aircraft carrier somewhere on the way home from Disney. I went on the tour, but I remember being scared too. If you were heading home from Disney and saw a Carrier & a sub in the same place, then you’ve been to Charleston, SC.
The carrier would have been the USS Yorktown (CV-10), and the sub was the USS Clamagore (SS-343).

Here’s what you likely saw…

Copy_of_Patriots_Point_2000_Yorktown_Clamagore.jpg

Do you remember taking a boat ride out to see an old fort during the same trip perchance?

You and your knowlege of boats... :thumbsup2 Yes, that's it. I figured you of all people would know what I was talking about.:lmao: I didn't remember the sub's name, but the carrier was definitely Yorktown! We didn't take a boat ride, but I'm thinking there might have been a destroyer or battleship there at that time too. I think we walked around on the deck of something else, but didn't get a full tour like we did on the sub and carrier.

Then again, that was about 20 years ago so my memory could be a bit fuzzy. :confused3

Well, since political conversation is frowned upon in the DISboards, let me just say that there is no logic to it.:rolleyes1

If it's political, then logic has no place in the room!

I know, that's why I was so shocked.

I guess the "Pictures or it didn't happen" rule would apply to Mr. Candy as well.

So… you’re moving me up to the front where I can distract everyone more effectively?

Careful...you don't want to have to join the Breakfast Club, do you?

Good point… of course this tells me that the only things standing between me and life under a bridge are a set of skills that can be replaced by a single undocumented worker.

That’s a might troubling.

:lmao::rotfl2::rotfl:

Well, I also do the taxes.

Cool! I’ve got an even more frightening tidbit… I knew most of that already
(I-R-Geek :sad2:)

Why am I not surprised? :confused3:rotfl2:

Careful...you don't want to have to join the Breakfast Club, do you?

So it's sorta social… demented and sad, but social. Right?

:lmao::rotfl2::rotfl:

Well, I also do the taxes.

Oh good! I take care of that one as well, so there might be hope for me yet.

Yah… I’m a bit of a mess. Being as you were pretty young, I figured you might appreciate the info. Now then, if you were at Patriots’ Point in the early to late 80s or early 90s, then the other ship that you got to get a good look at was most likely a highly decorated US Destroyer named USS Laffey (DD-724)

USS%20Laffey.jpg

A ship that was there during the same time frame that you’d only have been able to walk around the deck of was most likely the nuclear powered freighter NS Savannah (and yes, I said nuclear)

savannah.jpg
