Remembering extinct foods

I'm trying to lose the ten pounds I put on over the holidays. So naturally I'm having some pretty intense food fantasies(don't ask). I was thinking back to some of my favorite comfort foods that are no more.

Does anyone remember Hostess Chocodiles? I loved them. They were like Twinkies, but with a hard chocolate shell. I really miss them. Apparently, they are only sold on the west coast. What's that all about?

A cereal I miss is Smurf Berry Crunch. Next to Crunchberries, this was my favorite. Smurf Berry Crunch went extinct around the same time that Saturday morning cartoons went extinct. How sad.

Anyone else have happy memories of foods that no longer exist?

Space Sticks -- They were a strange food, and what were they supposed to be anyway? A breakfast item? Snack? Maybe the astronauts knew.

Celentano frozen pizza in a square aluminum tray -- This may have been a regional item. It was the most delicious frozen pizza ever made! I wish they'd bring back the original recipe. They changed the baking vessel into a cardboard tray in the early '80s. It wasn't a change for the better, and then they stopped selling it altogether.

Hunt's Skillet Dinners -- Growing up in the 60s and 70s, I went home for lunch, along with my younger sister and brother. My mom believed in feeding you a hot meal, so she's make these with a pound of ground beef. It was Hunt's version of Hamburger Helper and came in different flavors. The lasagna had hunks of "ricotta" cheese on top that was made from adding water to a cheese mix that came in the box. They had a Western dinner that was basically chili with cornbread dumplings. It was good stuff!

I'll try to think of more. The 60s and 70s were an interesting period for processed food.

My dad never like jarred pasta sauce so he would buy Spatini. Not that it tasted better but it's what he liked. It was a packet of seasoning that you would add to cans of tomato paste and water. Yum, yum...

I use to love Uncle Ben's Rice Bowls from the frozen food section. They had a Cajun Sausage and Rice one that was great for a quick lunch.

Not discontinued but I hate that Boo Berry cereal isn't sold year round here. We can only find it during Halloween time. It's my all time favorite cereal and end up buying a dozen boxes to last a couple of weeks after Halloween.

On a similar note, I used to love Frankenberries. I saw it on sale around Halloween and purchased several boxes. I'm convinced that they messed with the recipe because they tasted awful - nothing like I remembered. I still crave the vintage Frankenberries.

I grew up in PA then moved to NH. In PA, there's a chip manufacturer named Herr's and they make the BEST salt and vinegar chips. None of the brands I can get here hold up. So, usually on my birthday, a friend of mine still in PA ships me a bag of them.

I also LOVE Cadberry creme eggs so it frustrates me I can only get them around Easter.

I would love to have the cinnamon version of S. W. Graham cereal again.

Frankenberry is ok but I can find that much more often than Boo Berry.

I bet they did mess with the recipe. All that "make it more healthy" stuff. Just give me the sugary sweetness that I crave.

ohhh, I love Chocolite bars. They were light and airy...is that correct? I think that is what the commercial use to say.

I use to LOVE Fresca but I thought, as you mentioned, it may still be around.

Right now I could go for a cold Fresca and a cadburry egg...YYUUMMMYYYY

I just have to interject for a sec. On the subject of Tab, OMG, that is the nastiest concoction put on this planet. I'm convinced if you can drink Tab, you can eat cow patties. Please continue.

Either I'm A) Too young B) From Wisconsin meaning we don't have things or C) deprived due to parents who obviously didn't love me. With that said, I don't know what ANY of the above mentioned things are. Growing up, I don't remember anything canned or boxed or wrapped aside from tortilla chips being in the house. Veggies and fruits were grown at home and canned/frozen for the winter months. Maybe we were just poor. I remember eating golden grahms at my grandpas house and it was the most delicious tasting thing EVER!!! I only eat it when I go to Michigan since it's a staple at my grandpas, on the plus side...the last visit was the first time in 7 years.
The food I would forever be sad without is Mrs.Fishers chips (rare that I eat them, but sooooo delicious. When I went to Disney, I shipped down 8 bags for my aunt and uncle but forgot they went "healthy" so I gave some to random people and CMs and was told they were the best chips EVER!), Oke-Doke white cheddar popcorn is also so very sinful, and lastly, Manny's tortilla chips. All other things I could live without because, well, I don't eat them now! But thanks to WallE, I'm now hungry.

C) I'm sorry that your parents did not love you. Any self respecting parent that truly loved their child would have introduced overly processed foods with plenty of corn syrup and red dye #40 to their children back in the day. It sounds like you perhaps grew up in a little house on the prairie.
