Recent travelers from China not allowed on cruise

My extended family are cruising on the Dream Feb. 25th. I got an email today saying that they are now making that requirement 20 days after travel to China for anyone to be able to board. It also mentioned that many Bahamian islands, including Castaway Cay, will not allow anyone to disembark from a ship who has been to China in the last 20 days.

According to some posters on CC, NCL is denying boarding to anyone who's been to mainland China in the last 30 days and giving them full refunds. They are also implementing temperature screening of all passengers prior to boarding at some Asian ports and stopped self service at the buffets. Basically anyone taking a cruise on any line in the near future should expect some type of impact from this virus.

If it was a cruise that required a passport they can see that as China requires a visa.

But as earlier discussed, that only helps if DCL takes the time to examine every passport presented. They may or may not do so. They will likely rely strictly on the honor system.

They rely on the honor system for health screening anyway. I don't doubt that there are people who are not entirely honest on their health questionnaires which is how you end up with noro outbreaks onboard.

They will have to give refunds for illness if they want people to fess up, and even then some people still probably won't. And as another poster mentioned, people can just cruise with birth certificates if they don't want to show a passport. I'm not going to lie, I'm nervous because we don't travel until April and who knows how bad it will be by then.

I didn't notice this posted on here unless I missed it, but Scott Sanders tweeted earlier today that they are checking the passports and placing red stickers on them to show that there are no recent visits to China. In his tweet, he had a picture of a passport with the sticker on it. Not sure if he has it posted in his blog.

I'm not going to lie, I'm nervous because we don't travel until April and who knows how bad it will be by then.

Weve got a Med cruise and land trip in Italy planned for May. I am immunio compromised so I am watching this very carefully.

I travel in 29 days. Honestly, your ability to get into this country by then, and then board the cruise ship will be significantly difficult. So difficult I doubt it will be done by people trying to get on a cruise ship. Not only that, but most people really aren't getting much more than a bad cold from this and most people are surviving. If I were immunocompromised or had comorbidities, or anyone in my family I might bring this disease back to had those issues, I'd be concerned, but generally healthy people

Just saw a news article stating that the airlines are required to check and screen US bound passengers, which includes a passport check and questions regarding travel history as well as having to reroute any flight later found to have a passenger meeting the exclusion requirements. Basically, the government is going to put the expense off on the airlines in order to ensure compliance. Of course, that is all just preliminary screening. I'm sure if they fail at US customs, they get a one way ticket right back on the same carrier, with no facemasks. It pays to get it right the first time.

But what about land border crossings? While you have to show your passport to cross from Canada to the US, that's no indicator that you weren't in contact with someone who was from China while in Canada. I saw a new item that Canada is not restricting travel from China, as per WHO recommendation.

My guess is the scrutiny of passports will increase dramatically for those entering the US from Canada. I could see the machines that do the pre-scan even being disabled for entering the US.

Maybe. I just don't know what to think about it all. The WHO says not to ban travel from China and then a pile of countries do ban it anyway. Those of us from countries where it's not banned feel more at risk.

Why do you feel at risk? Are you immunocompromised?

I don’t feel at risk. And I was in the airport 8 times last week traveling between three major Canadian cities. Wash your hands regularly. Don’t put your hands in your mouth. You have significantly less chance of catching the novel coronavirus than you do of catching influenza.

I'm not immunocompromised, but I have family that is. It's a concern.

Which does not change the fact that DCL may or may not choose to scrutinize every passport that is presented to them. That takes time they may not wish to expend, rather relying on the honor system.
