Ready to sell DVC, not happy with it

We've been members for about 5 years now, and I absolutely loved my DVC membership up until the last few months. Now I'm ready to sell for the following reasons. Am I crazy?

1) Our most recent visit to BWV this week was awful. We were in a studio on the first floor and the condition of the room was not good. Dust everywhere, carpet stained throughout, cracked tiles, mold, funky smell. A/C barely kept up with the high heat that week. Handles on sink leaked green fluid. We complained twice in 24 hours about all of this, and BWV said they would not move us and could not move us because the room was booked with points. We've stayed at DVC resorts and many moderate and deluxe resorts and never ever had a problem with room cleanliness or condition. BWV told us this wing was being renovated soon, but that didn't do anything for our visit last week. We were very close to just checking out and paying for a cash ressie at POR, as the rooms at the moderates were much nicer and in much better shape. The fact that BWV was so indifferent to the situation was troublesome, and clearly showed me how the level of service is declining at DVC. It is important to note that we have NEVER complained about anything regarding our rooms when staying DVC in the past. We are not complainers, we just make the best out of everything.

2) Like I said, since we were DVC, BWV said there was little we could do. Seems that their focus is now on cash reservations, as they are very unwilling to help out members. The non villa portion of the hotel is very nice, as we got moved there in February because of some hotel wide maintenance issues in the villa side.

3) $700 a year in annual dues is a lot. I could take that $700 an apply it toward a vacation every year at a cash resort. We love the POLY and that would be about 2 nties a year there. I also worry about the increase in these dues over the next few years. DVC rooms are being sold to the general public which will increase wear and tear, which in turn, will increase our dues each year.

4) I am not happy with the fact that Disney continuously markets and sells DVC rooms on a cash basis for tad over the cost of moderate resorts at peak season. You can stay at POR for $150 a night or SSR at $190 a night. Hmmm. My membership was sold me on the basis that DVC had Deluxe Villa Accomodations. DVC would allow me to stay at these fine resorts at a substantially lower cost than if paid for in cash. That appears not to be the case anymore. I know this is not the case with the newer resorts such as AKL and BLT, but I am talking about a majority of the other resorts.

5) It is becoming increasingly difficult to get a reservation that we want. Every time I call, either none of our dates are available (and we are quite flexible) and/or the only options are OKW or SSR. Fortunately, a few of those times, our waitlist request has gone through which was nice, but I don't care to count on that. 5 years ago, we would get the dates and location we wanted first try. Now, its nearly impossible.

6) The buses seem to be getting worse too. With the exception of BLT, most DVC resorts rely on the buses for transportation. I'm at the point where I wound rather spend the extra money to stay at a monorail resort just to avoid the frustration and wasted time with the bus system. It took us 1 hour and 45 minutes to go from BWV to GF for dinner. This seems to be a common occurrence now.

We visit WDW 1-2 times a year, and it just seems to make more sense to me to purchase reservations each time than deal with all the hassle of DVC. Like I said, I had a great time with the 5 years of my DVC membership, I just see the quality of the product rapidly declining. Disney seems to be expanding DVC faster than they can ensure that quality Disney service is provided to each member. I'll take about a $5000 loss if I sell now, but I figure that is $1000 for each year that we used the club + dues, which I can stomach.

Overall, I like the flexibility of paying cash for reservations each year. I like the ability to stay on the monorail on the dates that I want. I like the quality of non DVC resorts. DVC just doesn't seem to have a place for me anymore. Am I crazy????

I think there is no question the quality is going to be a bit higher in a hotel than in a DVC unit. If you don't need a 1 or 2BR unit, then getting rid of DVC might be a good idea. Or at the very least you should consider paring down to a single 50-point contract, so that you can still rent or buy points and get discounts on annual passes and so forth. That way you can have some of the benefits of DVC whil usually enjoying hotel stays, since that is clearly what you usually prefer.

You aren't crazy, you have a preference that suits your needs and wants and budget.

Sounds like you are very unhappy with your membership right now. I don't believe that anyone should hold on to something that they are unhappy with.

Personnally I cannot imagine being that unhappy with DVC. We have owned for 10 years now and go 1-2 times per year and we have never had anything but the best experiences. Yes we have seen the occasional maintenance issue, but that is all it has been. I am sorry you have had a bad experience. I hope this works out for you.:flower3:

I would write member services about your experience, they should know.

Regarding SSR for $190, I don't think they would be able to rent to cash guests for much more. With all the deals CRO has - 4/3, free dining, 40% off, it would be difficult to get anywhere near rack rate for a resort that is not within walking distance of a park or has any special features (not on the monorail, no major pool like Stormalong, no animals like AKV). So they have to lower the price to fill the rooms. I think the major problem with SSR is many members bought there with the intention of staying elsewhere, so the other resorts are full and hard to get reservations while SSR has empty rooms.

For some reason most members seem to be like a frog in boiling water. Disney knows how to turn the heat up slowly so we don't seem to mind the temperature going up until the water boils. If they threw us into the boiling water, we would just jump out of the pot.

Their recent adjustments to the membership was met with little resistance and I don't see any of the changes benefiting the membership.

I have always been a strong advocate of letting Disney and the DVC know their strengths and their weaknesses. The majority of my contacts fall onto deaf ears. Disney is in the business of selling Time Shares, not maintaining them and they seem to do the minimum.

As I have said before, we still enjoy the cost savings and for families who visit WDW frequently and have the means to afford it, it's still a good deal.

I just wish that Disney would put some of the same effort into maintaining the resorts as they do selling memberships.

Please share your good and bad experiences and comments with the DVC Satisfaction Team.

This entire thread makes me want to rethink my add-on possiblities...because it is very true they should put as much work into maintainence as they do into selling their product

Thanks for all of your input. I do plan on writing Member Services this week with my feelings about DVC. I'm sure I will get some nicely written standardized letter in return, but at least my concerns will be documented.

If Disney paid more attention to the quality of its DVC product once delivered, I'd be much more likely to hang on. It is sad that Disney is letting the quality of this product deteriorate in the interest of selling more memberships.

BTW, does anyone have a name of a manager at DVC would I could address my concerns to? I'm not too keen on sending something to a general mailbox. Would it make any sense to send my complaints to my guide?

I thought that BWV was undergoing a refurbishment. If so, you may have hit one of the rooms just before it was refurbished.

In your original post you said, "We've stayed at DVC resorts and many moderate and deluxe resorts and never ever had a problem with room cleanliness or condition." Never had a problem and yet you are willing to sell based on one room. It sounds like you are bent on selling anyway.

You say that you could get 2 nights at the Poly per year with the dues you pay, but that's only 2 nights. Are you willing to pay for the other nights?

VWL just went through a refurb and it looks great. I'm happy with the condition of it.

But if it's not working out for you, then you should sell.

In response to this, I would have to say that the condition that the OP was describing is unacceptable regardless of whether or not the room was slated for refurbishment. It should never have gotten to that level in the first place.

To the OP, thank you for sharing the reasons for your decision with us. I'm a new member at BLT (so, obviously I have yet to stay there or at any DVC property) yet your report is not unique as to DVC's upkeep of its villas, which is very, very disturbing.

Best of luck to you in selling your DVC, and please do post any response that you receive from DVC when/if you contact them. :flower3:

I think the most important of the concerns you mentioned are 1) Wanting to be on the monorail and 2) Not being able to book at the resort you want. These are probably not fixable problems for you. If you can't or don't wish to book at your home resort using the home resort booking advantage, then you will continue to experience booking frustration. DVC works best for those who can book 11 months ahead or are willing to stay at any DVC resort for short notice stays. Regarding the monorail, someday there may be a DVC at Poly or GF, but for now BLT would be your option. You don't sound interested in the DVC product anymore so selling and re-buying at BLT is not in the cards for you, I guess. I think your logic for selling makes sense. Good luck. And thank you for being willing to share your concerns via a letter to management.

If this is the way you feel then no selling is not a crazy option.

I would not generalize. I am very happy with VWL and have never had a problem. The OP hadn't had a problem until now.

OP - You may want to consider changing your signature... :thumbsup2

"Disney Vacation Club from now on!!!"

I agree, the only problem I had with Disney conditions at a resort is when we stayed at Port Orleans. I find that DVC was nicer and better kept to include the rooms than when we stayed at POR. One instance I saw at POR was someone left a whole ice cream and cone laying in front of the steps, it stayed there and was never cleaned up the whole time I was there (7 days). It got nasty but the ants loved it:rotfl: I have seen things like this at DVC but it has been picked up in timely manner. I honestly don't think we have seen an issue with the DVC resorts but agree with OP that BWV does need a rehab plus BWV has one of the highest MF. Which is interesting because I'm not sure what would drive the prices up :confused3

It's Disney policy not to put anything in writing so include your phone number. I have written to several different levels of management depending upon the issue and my return call has always been from the DVC Satisfaction Team. Off the record they have hinted that their hands are tied, they have zero power to make change, and the policies are set by upper management.

Your Guide is a sales person who is paid to sell. They have nothing to do with anything other than sales.

Jim Lewis is the President of the Disney Vacation Club.

I wouldn't sell after one bad stay....seems a knee-jerk reaction.

BUT, I also joined DVC to stay in one bedrooms on up. So NO WAY would I want to stay at a simple hotel room at the Poly!

We've been members for 13 years. I've never gotten an unclean room. My biggest beef is the crappy new beds they put in at OKW. I don't care for some of the other changes as well, but not enough to want to cram myself into one room with my 7 year old for a week and call it a vacation!

I don't necessarily blame DVC for the condition of the room. I blame all those who stayed there before the OP and didn't report anything. We are the owners. We need to report any problems in a timely manner.

The OP was right to report that disgusting room. It's a shame that it wasn't done sooner.

I felt the same way you did upon my recent return. We thoroughly loved our stay at BCV. It's when we moved over to AKV Kidani for 3 nights that I became disillusioned with DVC; not the properties, but the customer service.

Short story: My AC was not working properly. I complained, apparently too nicely, every day for 3 days and nothing was ever done, nor did anyone communicate with me about it. I truly felt like they could have cared less since I wasn't a "regular" paying customer. And I did send them an e-mail about it on June 11th and still have yet to hear from anyone, other than the canned response.

I too have considered selling at this point . . . and still might . . . I'm just trying to make sure that's what I really, really want to do. Then the next day I'm thinking about adding on at BLT. What's up with that? :confused3
