Amsterdam

Hi all, my husband and I are going to Amsterdam in early July for an adults only trip. We have been before (as have I a couple of other times) so we have been to the major attractions/things to do/see. Does anyone have any suggestions on things that we may not have done before. (previously been to the main museums, Ann Frank Haus, canal tour). Also any food or market suggestions. Just trying to think outside of the box a bit. Thank you.

Have you had herring before?
Ha. So yes. I am 1/2 Dutch so when I was a child I visited family with my child and the family served me pickled herring. I was 10. I had to swallow it down. I haven't tried it again on recent trips but it is on my list for this trip.

That’s the one thing we did not try. I was shocked by all the herring food booths everywhere. But a herring and onion sandwich did not appeal to us in the least.

You can find it in America as well, not just the Netherlands.

I have Dutch heritage as well. 😊

Would you enjoy herring more if it was baked/fried or just not a fish fan in general?
Baked/fried would be fine for me. It is the pickled that is hard for me to get past. my husband who I will be traveling with does not eat fish at all so if I stop it will have to be at a stand for a snack.

They do have cooked ones at certain stands according to Google.

I used to love fish. I don’t eat it anymore because of a shellfish allergy and the risk of cross-contamination. That said, fried herring would have definitely been appealing for my husband to try but we kept running across the pickled herring sandwich stalls instead.
