Marathon Weekend 2026

SAFD: Was lucky enough to snag one of the AP previews when they opened GE. My DD videoed me doing Savi's and still laughs at how excited I was building my lightsaber. Bummed my only attempt at the Star Wars races was the year it got cancelled for Covid. Running through the Star Wars mile this year at MW makes me miss the opportunity to have done those races even more.

SAFD: there are so many great things about Galaxy’s Edge. The first time we tried Rise I was absolutely amazed and couldn’t help clapping and cheering on the way out!

The most memorable time was when my DD (aged 9) met Rey. She absolutely loves her. Rey took my daughter for a walk (they were gone for around 5 minutes!) and told her all sorts of secrets about the resistance and the work they were doing. To this day I still don’t know what she told her, as my daughter is very serious about keeping the secret! It was wonderful.

SAFD: My favorite SW experience at Disney World would have been in the late 90s (maybe early 2000). There was a big rainstorm that everyone was hiding from, so my brother and I were able to basically get off of Star Tours, and then get right back on, while my Mom and Aunt hid in Star Traders (or whatever its called). Rode it several times that day. (If you can't tell from the screen name I am a big Star Wars fan).

I haven't been to Galaxy's edge yet, I was last at Hollywood Studios in May of 2019, so I have a picture of the coming soon sign but haven't been there yet. Looking like there will be time on this trip, really looking forward to trying the Cantina. Maybe will try Rise, but my daughter won't be able to ride it so I would have to go solo.

The Star Wars races were actually what got me interested in Run Disney learned about it from theforce.net shortly after my first half in 2014. Life got in the way and it was always someday item, along with the Marathon proper, so getting 1/2 of that done now, other 1/2 looking like it won't happen baring a spring time surprise weekend one year revival/surprise which I'm not expecting

On a Running related note, ran a half today I was planning on using a POT for, broke my previous PR by 7 minutes to get 1:51:29 (previous PR was a very high 1:58:XX set in 2015 but I didn't run any races more than a 10K between 2019-2023 due to a lot of life/injuries). A March 10, right near the start of my training block, and my watch both had predictions near 2 hours. A couple of training runs made me think a sub 1:55 was possible if everything went perfect, and I guess it went more than perfect. Very very happy with this.

SAFD: the memory is a little hazy at this point, but when I was in my early teens, we went on spring break and visited MGM studios for the day. My cousins and their parents went on tower of terror (I wasn't interested, and it's one of very few rides I've never been on to this day....sacrilege, I know!) but I vividly remember riding Star Tours over and over and over and OVER because there was no line, so we would get off the ride, race around the outside and get back on immediately and then scream our heads off.

I do enjoy how immersive that whole section of HS is at this point, but if there's a park or section we're going to skip on a trip, it's HS/Star Wars because I don't love the rides/experiences.

SAFD:
Going to age myself here…. Summer of 88, grad night at Disneyland. My friend group rode Star Tours over and over again. One of my friends was (and still is) a HUGE Star Wars fan, and every time we would come off the ride and then go get in line to ride again he would explain all these points that were right or wrong, he was very invested! It was such a fun night and I remember being blown away by the ride and the jump to light speed and how real it felt. Between Star Tours, Space Mountain and Captain EO, not sure we left Tomorrowland much that night. Such a wonderful memory!

SAFD: I will go on the dining side of things. I really enjoyed going to Ronto Roasters and Docking Bay 7, and would like to go again. They do an incredible job with their plant-based options.

When we were in DL (our only trip, for the Jan. 2024 races), we were accosted by two Stormtroopers who were suspicious of us. The cast members always do such a great job!

DH adds that the first time we rode Rise, he almost fainted when the doors opened to reveal the platoon of Stormtroopers in formation. So cool!

SAFD: Never got to run the SW races - hope to change that one day!

Cheating a little: My favourite SW memory was when my Dad first took my on Star Tours at DL as a teen - this was right after it opened and I couldn't believe I got to be part of a SW adventure. I can't even remember how many times we rode it. I also think it rekindled my amazement of what Disney and the imagineers can do (as like most teens I had started to get a little jaded)

To bring it back to WDW - walking into Galaxy's edge brought that back to me. Walking on to the Star Destroyer and seeing all the Storm Troopers in ROTR was surreal. I've wanted to drink blue milk since I was a 7 year old - and wanted to go to a SW Cantina since and have some more adult drinks since I was .... (maybe a little too young to get in)

Good afternoon RunDisney All-Stars! May the 4th be with you and welcome to this week's edition of Sundays are for Disney (SAFD). In honor of Star Wars Day, what is, or has been, your favorite Star Wars experience at WDW?
SAFD: The answer has to be Rogue 2 with @lhermiston during the MW 10K in 2020. We made a slight detour from the course and ran to DHS so we could be inside the park at 7am in order to get boarding groups for Rise. One of the best stunts we've ever pulled, and that's saying something. :)

SAFD: Star Wars weekends were awesome. I I especially enjoyed a “sit down” interview that had several of the actors onstage chatting about the original three movies. I think that one was hosted by Ashley Eckstein and had several cast member: Mark Hamill, Peter Mayhew, Billy Dee Williams, and others.

We ran the Star Wars weekends twice, all three races. I was Dark side and DH was Light side in these pictures. Was this 2017? I was Stormtrooper 5k, Phasma 10K, and Vader half marathon. DH was Fin, R2D2. And BB8. Old pictures are hard to find, and I couldn’t find a good one of us at the half.

SAFD: So, I had to make a Top 10 list because there's no way to narrow it down just to one. :D I don't talk about it as much here, but Star Wars has been a huge part of my life since I was 11 years old and it's not an overexaggerating to say that most of the best friends in my life - including my husband - came from loving Star Wars. My fandom isn't quite what it used to be thanks to some disappointments in the direction of the saga lately, but it will always be my number one. (And if you're not watching Andor, it's incredible.)

  1. Watching Star Wars fireworks the day of our wedding. We got married on May 25, aka the real Star Wars day, aka the day A New Hope was released in theatres. That was during Star Wars Weekends and they capped off the evenings with Star Wars fireworks. Our wedding was in the morning, so afterward we drove back to Orlando, checked into the Swolphin, and rode the boat to DHS. Seeing fireworks set to John Williams music while standing next to my new husband was one of the best moments of my life. Even better: earlier in the evening we saw Ashley Eckstein walking through the park and she congratulated us on our wedding.
  2. Mark Hamill was a guest at Star Wars Weekends in 2014 and yes, I was there every single day! Luke is my absolute favorite Star Wars character and I have been in love with him/Mark Hamill since I first saw the Binary Sunset scene. During one of the Stars of the Saga shows, we sat right behind his family and it was REALLY HARD to temper my reactions during the show.
  3. Speaking of Ashley Eckstein - Star Wars Weekends 2012 was the first year I had annual passes and went every weekend. At once point, I was walking toward the pathway near ABC Commissary and I hear someone yelling behind me. I didn't think anything of it, but then two women came up beside me and said "I love your Her Universe bag!" I said thank you, then looked and realized it was Ashley Freaking Eckstein. My brain did a short circuit and I was like, "oh my god, thank you!" I had met her at Celebration 2010 so it was great to see her again. And then she said, "Are you Nanci from Twitter?" (At the time HU had an active presence on Twitter, and I was involved in what we affectionately called "Star Wars Twitter.") I was like, "Uh, yes!!!" She thanked me for all the support and I almost died. I miss Star Wars Weekends for many reasons, but a big one is not seeing Ashley every weekend. She truly is one of the nicest people you will ever meet.
  4. Continuing the Star Wars Weekends theme - when they re-opened Star Tours in 2011, there was a big rumor that George Lucas was going to be there. My friend and I got there early and staked out spots by the hat stage (RIP Sorcerer's Hat), and sure enough, we spotted George and Bob Iger early on. We were near the front for the opening show and then George and Bob came out as Jedi. It was really cheesy but a lot of fun. I love Star Tours and think it's such an underrated attraction, especially considering the wait times are usually pretty low and they can change the ride often. And now, my son loves it, too!
  5. And rounding out Star Wars Weekends - the entire event in general. It was SO MUCH FUN and I made so many friends there. The locals would gather near the spot where the parade stepped off and cheer everyone who came out. The celebrity guests came to expect us there and loved the energy. All the meet and greets were super fun, as well as the shows. A specific call out to the Hyperspace Hoopla, a ridiculous dance party with Star Wars characters that was the best and worst thing you ever saw in your life. I miss it so much!
  6. In 2011, Del Rey publishing released a 20th anniversary edition of Heir to the Empire, the novel most people view as kicking off the modern Expanded Universe, now branded Legends. For several decades until the sequel trilogy started development, books and comics were the official story of what came after the Original Trilogy. I loved (most of) those books and my other favorite character, Mara Jade, came from the Heir to the Empire trilogy. To celebrate the re-release, the author, Timothy Zahn, did a signing at the Writer's Stop. (RIP - you were a bastion of air conditioning during Star Wars Weekends!) He's my favorite author of all time so of course I had to go. I had seen him at several conventions but this was the first time I got to have a long conversation with him, and he is also one of the nicest people you could ever meet. (Years later, in 2018 and 2019, I got to moderate panels with him at Dragon Con, the first year being on Saturday in a larger room, and I still haven't come down from that high.)
  7. First time in Batuu and building a lightsaber. While I really miss old Hollywood Studios and Star Wars Weekends, I also love Batuu. We were lucky to attend a cast member preview and being there with low crowds with incredible. We walked into the land and almost cried. We had no plans to build a lightsaber, but our friend convinced us to, and the experience was amazing and made us cry. (My husband did it that time, and I did it later on my birthday. Our son is ALMOST old enough to truly enjoy the experience, and I can't wait.) Stepping foot on the Millennium Falcon was also a dream come true. I couldn't go on the ride because I was pregnant, but I sat outside while they rode it a few more times, soaking in the almost empty land, knowing I'd never see it that way again! (Still, spending almost 8 hours at a theme park in the hot August sun while pregnant made me extremely extremely tired, LOL.)
  8. First time on Rise of the Resistance! Our baby was born literally days after Rise of the Resistance opened and only a few days before The Rise of Skywalker premiered, so needless to say, we did not get to ride Rise when it first opened, and we didn't know when we'd be able to because there was no way we were getting to the park early to do the virtual queue. We had a friend in town for her birthday with a bunch of other friends, and we made plans to meet them, but again, were unable to get there early for the queue. Well, they had met up with another CM friend who worked in Batuu, and he rode rise with them during their window - and then asked if people wanted to go again, including me and my husband We were like, uh, YES!!!?? But also, we had the literal newborn baby with us, but he said that was okay, he could take two groups. Then, two friends of ours offered to watch our baby so we could go on the ride together. What??? We were so grateful and so excited we would get to experience the ride TOGETHER! It was an amazing experience and I'll never forget stepping off the transport into the hangar for the first time.
  9. Baby's first ride on Rise! A few years later, we got to take that newborn on Rise for the first time, and while he was a little scared, he ended up loving it. He also loves Smuggler's Run and Star Tours. Being able to share Star Wars with him at Disney is one of my favorite things in the world, and why I spend way too much money buying him stuff. :D
  10. And finally - the Star Wars mile(s) at the 2025 marathon. I will always regret not having done the Star Wars races, as I didn't start running until 2023, but having that Bear Island Road stretch during my first marathon, and ON MY BIRTHDAY, was the best gift ever. And I really needed it at that part of the race!
So there you have it, my extremely long-winded answer. :D I'm sure you all will never ask me about Star Wars again!

SAFD (a little bit late): I was six when A New Hope came out, so I absolutely grew up on Star Wars and can't get enough! DH and I did the Galactic Starcruiser and we have ZERO regrets. It was truly a unique, incredible and immersive experience like nothing else we've ever done. We also had a preview of Galaxy's Edge before it opened and made a trip just for that -- totally worth it! My inner 6-year-old could not believe I was standing next to THE Millennium Falcon! Star Wars weekends were pretty awesome too, and we often got to experience those when our nephews were young.

Bringing it back to rD, the entire reason I started doing races beyond the 5K was to get that Kessel Run medal. I just missed out on the DL version when it was canceled out from under me, but managed to get three WDW Star Wars race weekends in and my Kessel Run thanks to the virtual offering. I LOVED the surprise SW mile on the marathon course, and really hope they bring back at least one SW themed race for SS next year.

SAFD: I never did a Star Wars race, and all your posts are making me regret that.

This year at MW, I saw the smoke rising for the Star Wars battle scene from afar, and my Dopey-addled brain thought “something has exploded on course, hope there’s no injuries, this race is over.”
I yelled “oh no, what happened?!?” And someone had to tell me it’s special effects for the race.
I LOVED the battle whole section after that intense moment of fear. 🤪

So my youngest, and long time runDisney running partner has flipped her college intentions. No longer going to Michigan, she has accepted a pre-med and honors program at Michigan State that came with a nice scholarship! So why do I share this - besides the opportunity to brag about the genius she is? Her winter break shifts and now she can come to MW!

Originally our plan, as she will be 18, was for her to do her first Dopey with me. We did not register her since she could not go. Now she can. Does anyone know of any charities that still have Dopey bibs? Figure this is a long shot at this point, but gotta try.

Regardless, a big positive in her switch to MSU, her older sister is a Spartan. We have now avoided a house divided; Thanksgiving will be so much more peaceful! 😀😆🤣
Kudos on the scholarship and not having a house divided, something so very important, particularly during football and basketball season.
Someone else has already posted a link for charities. My experience with them is that as they near the race date, they will want to sell any unused bibs (or the bibs from people who didn't raise any money) to cover their costs. I've gone with charities where I like their mission, so I've been good with buying the bib and also making a contribution. The downside to this is that you are banking on them having a bib available. The two times that I've found out on short notice that I'd be in Orlando on a race weekend, I emailed the charity, told them my predicament, and offered to buy a bib and make a contribution if they had any unclaimed. Did just that for the Princess Half a couple of years ago, and was set to do the same for SS last month, except I managed a last minute registration through rD based on a Telegram alert.

Which brings us to setting up a Telegram account and joining the rD account that monitors the race availability. As rD sorts through entries, they periodically open up registration for a small number of bibs. As others have noted before, they typically do so right before/during/after a race weekend. I was able to score a SS bib right before this year's Princess weekend. The key is to be ready to jump on the registration link as soon as it pops up, and even if Telegram has already sent a "registration closed" message, if that link works, stay with it until you can't. I learned that the hard way. Keep refreshing and you may get through. I keep my personal computer off to one side of my desk at home and just kept clicking the refresh for appx 15 minutes and eventually was able to register. Note that if you want to submit a POT, you need to do it right then or you won't be able to do so later without going to the runner help counter at the expo. I ran into this with the SS 10-miler, and the line at the expo was long enough that I just said the heck with it and was content with the corral I was assigned. (I think I may have moved up one corral is all, so it wasn't worth standing in the line).
Besides around race weekends, there also seems to be some time during the summer when additional bibs are released, as noted by an earlier post on this thread. So set up the Telegram account and set the notifications so that you aren't unduly spamming yourself. For instance, you'll see a notice and get all excited, only to see that it is for yoga, or a race that you aren't interested in. And while the registration open/close messages often come in seconds apart, there are times when the window of opportunity stays open for minutes, sometimes as long as ten minutes. So you may see bibs come available around W&D, but also periodically during the summer. Have all your rD profile updated and ready, and then necessary entry data (like your cc number) on notepad so that you can quickly cut-n-paste it, as speed if of the essence to get registered when the opportunity presents itself.

It's a bit of effort, but there is a better than even chance of securing a bib through those two methods. YMMV. Good luck with it.

SAFD:
Well......there's always that one guy.

I don't have a favorite SW memory because the whole franchise simply has no interest to me. If I had to pick something, it's I do enjoy seeing all of the delight on other peoples faces as they interact in and with Galaxy's Edge.

Sorry. And stay off the lawn!
I have no words. Not sure how we can stay friends now.... [stomps around on the lawn]. ;-)

I'm old enough to have seen ST:TOS when originally broadcast, and to see Apollo missions, which started my love of sci-fi and why I became an aerospace engineer. So here comes SW when I was 10 or 11, and it eclipsed the previous record holder for special effects (2001: A Space Odyssey). My peers and I were totally blown away; it was one of the coolest things I've ever seen. And while I'm now knocking on 60, and not always happy with the movies and what Dis has done to the SW universe, I still love the franchise and was so happy to finally share it with my son with Galaxy's Edge and Cosmic Rewind last month.

My fav SW memory? Being in HS over a decade ago, wearing my medal, and showing it to Darth Vader who is leaning over to peer at it. I have a great photo that I need to find. (I also offered my inhaler and got removed by one of the Stormtroopers. Too funny)
And put me down as one more person peeved that I missed all the SW-themed runs. I'd love a Millennium Falcon or other SW-themed medal. So cool. Yeah, there are times when I'm still 12....

Thanks for sharing! Each moment is amazing, your emotions can be read thru the lines!!

I’m not a SW fan, haven't watched the movies or series; but still I love seeing collective positive energy from Disney crowds :)… hence I did the 2 or 3 am line at HS for the boarding group while reading a wiki summary of it so that I could understand the plot and the ride LOL

Yesterday I went to HS for the 4th day celebration, just people watching was super fun.. :)

I am cringing as I type this...

SAFD: I actually don't like Stars Wars. 🥱 Not any of it. I KNOW. Shameful. 😵‍💫 But, I love that it brings such joy to others (really). 😇
And I pleased to see that @nancipants and her Star Wars obsession closely matches my love for Princess Jasmine. I am clearly not the only one around here....😉
