So straws? Yay or nay now? Plastic ones, are they in the parks, resorts what? If not can you get one by asking? Just wondering before we leave on Friday.

Just got back today. Quick service places had straw dispensers like always. Take what you want. They did not automatically give us straws at any sit-down places, but they had no problem at all giving them to us when asked. My mom has really sensitive teeth, so any cold beverage requires a straw for her. No judgement, no delay and most had straws in an apron pocket for immediate service. :)

I don't understand why this keeps cropping up. Why can't people drink without straws?

For some people they are sensitive to cold beverages on their front teeth and why they want a straw. Either way doesn't matter to me, I can use or not use a straw. But I do understand for those who need one.

I have 4 children, 9 and under. When we sit down to eat it is much easier if they have lids and straws, that way if they do spill their cup (you know, kids being kids and all) we have a better chance of not making a mess everywhere. I also prefer to have lids and straws on my cups because I find them to be much more stable when holding a child in one arm and cup in the other.

I am very conscious about not using straws and have bought a few sets of stainless steel ones from Amazon that come with a little bag and cleaning brush.
Been asked about them so many times they are a great idea.

Maybe they'll do like Starbucks and start using the same type of cold beverage lids they do. Its like a lid and straw combo. Though its still plastic.....

we just got back also and most places did not give straws unless you asked, and most were paper straws. Some QS places didnt even use lids or have them out to take one. We are fine without straws, our son prefers to drink with a straw and was fine with all paper ones at most TS locations.

Some of us prefer it. I bring my own.

Yes I get it, some people prefer straws. That's an obvious response. The actual thing that I don't understand is why people need to put insignificant personal preferences over making a change for the greater good (in this case, keeping plastic waste out of the environment). That's the part I don't understand. We all have preferences - that doesn't make all of them important or not worth deviating from.

I get where you're coming from, which is why I don't care that Disney parks are getting rid of them. I prefer to bring reusable straws from home. That's what I use every day.

I don't understand the outrage over the plastic bag issue, either.

If using a straw is a strong preference, or important to someone I think they need to prepare and bring their own.

I was responding directly to your question.

If that message and energy was applied to the complete waste of plastic water bottles, I would believe consider the plastic straw more seriously.

Most places I've been to this week have changed to paper straws. The only place I had to request a straw and it was still plastic was at Trail's End.

There are legitimate special needs that require a straw to drink safely. My son had that issue as a young child due to a deformity of his larynx. Because of how important it was I always kept some on me because I didn’t want to be at the mercy of a restaurant running out. So long as Disney continues to provide them if requested for those with disabilities I see no issue with not having them standard issue with all drinks.

Those are recyclable.
Straws are not.

Can you imagine what wound have happened if he’d had a straw in that glass?

I now have a whole set of silicon and stainless straws. Then I got silicon tip things to put on the stainless, as I kept having nightmareish imaginations of smashing my tooth or lip with the stainless. Much better.

It can be recycled, but it’s expensive. There are communities around me that are abandoning curbside recycling because plastics are too expensive to recycle. We would be better off selling less 1-use bottled waters.

Last year, my friend brought some stainless steel ones in the beginning of the switchover, and a security checker at the front of the part questioned them and almost made her throw them out....so yeah......we went with whatever ones they had in the park after that....

But here's my problem with these paper straws.....when everybody was getting all "paper straw crazy" last year, all the paper straws they were using (when I was on vacation in Chicago) was AWFUL....I kept saying "Animal Kingdom has had paper straws for over 10 years! They don't fall apart! Don't give us straws that disintegrate after 10 minutes!"

UGH
