Hello! This will be the story of the first four days of last week's best friend Disney/Universal trip. Who are these people you are about to read about? I (L) am a 59 year old Language Coach (ESL) in an elementary school and my friend (J) is a 58 year old former librarian who now owns and runs multiple businesses with her husband. I work part time for their company as HR and payroll. This trip was my friend and I's end of year bonus from her husband which was incredibly thoughtful and generous. We spent 4 days at Disney and 2 days at Universal (that trip report is in the Universal area). Both of us are Disney lovers and have been with our families many times over the years. We also went to Disneyland together 2 years ago so it's not our first theme park rodeo as travel partners!

Our first four days of the trip were at Disney so we landed in Orlando and took an Uber to our first hotel, The Swan. Well, we actually took an Uber to the Swan Reserves where we walked in and announced our presence and wish to check in and were told.....we were at the wrong place. Everyone was very nice and said it happens all the time and they let us take their resort van over to the actual Swan. I have to say that, from what we saw, the reserve is actually a lot nicer than the regular Swan. Guess that's why they kicked us out lol.

We finally arrived at our actual hotel and checked in and checked our bags at the valet. We noticed that there were a lot of convention folks milling around and it was quite busy in the lobby. We had already decided that Epcot would be our first park so we headed out the back of the hotel to the boat dock and didn't wait long for the boat to the park.21155d16-d9c9-4e6b-8c72-9c1703d02667.jpeg

We decided to get into the park and head across the international gateway to France. My friend remembered having some champagne there last time she was there that she loved. As it turns out she was thinking of the Rosa Regale in Italy but we still each got a $20 glass from the little store. This was the first weekend of Festival of the Arts and we could already tell it was packed. And the alcoholic drinks were expensive! They had to open a new bottle so they gave me the cork and said it was good luck. I kept it and still have it in my bag. I will totally take any luck that I can get!
xx.jpeg
We walked around the pavilion and then headed over to Morocco where we decided to get a sangria. We got it from the quick service restaurant and also got the naan bread with dips. We were looking at all the food booths and the lines were incredibly long so we figured tasting some of the FArts food might not be in the cards for that day. We split the bread and dips and they were all good, it was a good little items to share. We walked through Morocco and took in the atmosphere and shops and then moved on to Japan.

aa.jpeg

In Japan we went into he store and thoroughly browsed through everything. My son used to save all his souvenir money to use in this store so it was very nostalgic (he's now 28 year old!). We had told ourselves we were getting a drink in every country so we decided to get the sake, even though we were afraid it would be nasty. It was. Lol. We made ourselves throw back about half of the glass and threw the rest away. J had to take a work call so I was able to just sit in the sun and enjoy the people watching. It was a cold but lovely day!
a.jpegb.jpeg

We moved on to America and walked through the exhibit which I now can't remember what it was about. J was getting cold so this let us warm up inside for a bit. We went back out and got an Expresso martini from the Joffrey's cart. We were skeptical about how this would taste but it was really good and got some caffeine in us!
c.jpeg

We continued on to Italy where we watched the juggler/mime do his show. It's always entertaining. We strolled through the stores and this is when we realized that the wine J wanted was the Rosa Regale red. So, of course, we both got a glass and spent time window shopping and people watching.
d.jpeg
It was so crowded, there was no getting on rides and all the food booths were 25 or 30 people deep so we just decided to keep moving and do what we could. We walked into Germany and were still hungry after only splitting that dip so we got the traditional beer and pretzel. I loved the cheese dip and J hated it. It was cold and more like a pimento cheese without the pimento. So I dipped and she slathered her side with mustard. The pretzel was delicious!
e.jpeg
We ate and did a tour of the shops and then kept walking around the showcase. We decided we did not want any of the drinks in China that didn't have a huge line so we walked through the pavilion and moved on to Norway. Again, all of the booths were packed and the only other options were beer, which we didn't want, plus Frozen had a 100 minute wait. We looked at the church exhibit and in the store and walked to Mexico. We went inside and there was no line for Gran Cabelleros so we did the ride. Which was cute and fun as usual. And no wait at all. Now the wait for the margaritas at Cava was out the front door of the pavilion, it had to be an hour long. So no go on that. We went to the quick service restaurant in Mexico and split some street tacos, beans, and rice and a margarita. It was all decent but, being from TX, nothing to write home about.

It was around 5:00 and it was just getting more and more crowded. We looked at the app and saw that Spaceship Earth had a 5 min wait so we left the World Showcase and headed there. We basically walked right on the loved it as usual. When they took our picture mine didn't work and so J was on the screen at the end with a headless friend. Otherwise great ride. We looked at wait times again and nothing was under 60 min so we left out of the front of the park and took a bus to Hollywood Studios thinking we could try to get on some rides there and, if it's too crowded, we could take the boat back to the Swan from there.

We went into Hollywood Studios and decided to do Minnie and Mickey's Railroad because it had a 20 min wait. First we stopped at the Brown Derby walk up outside bar to get a drink to drink in the line. I guess the bartender here is somewhat of an icon and the people behind us in line were telling us he had been there for years. But, let me tell you, he was the slowest bartender we've ever seen. There were only about 4 people in front of us in line and it took at least 20 minutes to get our drink. Which was just Tito's and soda. He was quite the talker with no sense of urgency lol. Finally got the drink and rode Minnie and Mickey's. We had done it before in CA and loved it and felt the same this time. It is just so cute and fun! Love the ride technology and how the cars move. We looked at the app and the waits were long except Star Tours, which was 5 min. So we headed there and did that ride quickly. It pales next to the new Star Wars rides but still fun with no wait. We debated doing a few more things and staying for Fantasmic but had been up since 4:00 am so decided to head back to the hotel.

It was an easy boat ride back to the hotel and we were in bed by 9:00 after deciding on Animal Kingdom for our first stop tomorrow. Stay tuned for Day 2 and our lightning lane revelation...

I'm just back from WDW too! The exhibit in the American Pavillon is: PORTAITS of COURAGE: A Commander in Chief's Tribute to America's Warriors. The artist / painter is George W. Bush. I would encourage anyone passing thru the WS to stop and see it!

Day 2

We woke up around 7:30 the next morning and got ready for our Animal Kingdom day. We decided to go straight to Everest and then to the Safari. We knew about Lightning Lane but only that you had to purchase it and you only got 3 ride choices and then had to hope others might have availability. We weren't sure it was worth it. Well...we got an education later in the day but I digress.

We took a bus to Animal Kingdom and only had to wait about 10 min. They were letting people in before opening time so we walked toward the tree and went right around the park. We didn't really realize we were about to walk halfway around the park to get to Everest. But walk we did lol. Finally made it to Everest which had a 20 min wait. The queue is interesting and pretty much kept moving throughout the wait. There was a cold front coming in later in the day but it was actually humid and fairly warm at this point. Great ride, so much fun.
h.jpegi.jpeg

We headed straight for the Kilimanjaro Safari. It had a wait time of 40 min but we knew that wasn't getting any shorter so we jumped in. While we were in line we started researching Lightning Lane. We had no idea you could book 7 days out if you stay in a Disney hotel. So this was a total fail by us. No way to fix it now so we bought it for the day and started making reservations in Magic Kingdom for the afternoon (where we decided to go later). The times were available there where there was nothing available at Animal Kingdom. We waited in line with some families from Brazil who were so much fun to talk to and who were having so much fun. Lots of little kids and excitement, we were so happy to be a small part of their fun. When we got on the vehicle we were in the very front row. It started great with lots of animals out and about. Our driver gave lots of good info about the animals and everything was going along great. But then...the driver started yelling in the microphone about sitting down. Then about keeping kids in your lap. Then about being quiet around the animals. Then she stopped the truck and said some people are going to ruin this for everyone and please stop. At this point we turned around because, what the heck? I mean the big group we had been talking to were excited and talking loudly about the animals and making noises but this seemed to be an overreaction. Our driver then said she would not stop to see any other animals unless everyone sat down and was quiet. Then she threw her little walkie talkie microphone down on the floor 😯. J and I were trying not to laugh because it was so dramatic.

Everyone kind of quieted down and we made it through the rest of the ride. Seemed a little over the top especially bc our line friends were so nice and happy. Anywho...we left the ride and contemplated what to do next. We didn't need to be in the Magic Kingdom until 3:00 or so and it was only 11:00.

We were walking and I recognized the Nomad Lounge from my last trip and we decided to see if we could get a drink because there was a girl monitoring the door. We asked her about a drink and sitting at the bar and she said we could get to go through a certain door and get to go. So we waited and she finally waved us in. When we walked in there were numerous seats at the bar and we asked the bartender if it was open seating or we had to reserve. He said the whole bar was open seating so find a spot. Not sure why the girl outside didn't tell us that but yay! We ordered the Annapurna Sling and Tempting Tigress.
m.jpeg
These were delicious! We started talking to the people next to us and next thing we knew their son and his girlfriend came in and they had just gotten engaged! Everyone was so excited and the atmosphere was so fun. They told us all about it and we ordered another drink and cheers them to a wonderful life. As we were sitting there the cold front blew in and it started raining and the wind was blowing so hard. We were watching out the window like, woah! As we were finishing our drink some girls came in and stood behind us and asked if we were leaving. J, who is just an incredibly kind person, was like oh we will get up and let you sit down, let us pay. So the girls stood right behind us breathing down our necks as we slammed our drink and paid. I'm the not as nice one and would have told them we weren't leaving soon, sorry, just in case we wanted another. So we paid and were thrust out into basically high winds, rain, and cold lol.

We checked the app and everything inside had over an hour wait except for Zootopia. So we ran out into the rain with our sweatshirt hoods up toward that ride. You can't really tell how hard it was raining but I took this as we ran through Pandora.

n.jpeg

We made it to Zootopia the movie and walked right in to the cave. This was super cute, a fun new refurb for A Bug's Life. I have only seen scenes from Zootopia, not the whole movie and still enjoyed it. We walked through the stores because it was still raining outside. It was crowded and chaotic. There was so much I wanted to do at the park including all of Pandora, Dinoland since it will be gone by the time I get back, and some of the trails and animal sights. But it was a madhouse and we decided to bail and head to Magic Kingdom where we had our Lightning Lane rides booked.

Stay tuned for the second half of the day....

Yes! Thank you! It was worth a look. Now I remember all of the paintings of soldiers who were injured in the line of duty.

Day 2 continued...

We had to take a bus from Animal Kingdom to the Transportation and Ticket Center and then take the monorail to Magic Kingdom. We walked into Magic Kingdom as the rain stopped and the castle was beautiful.

o.jpeg

We realized that the 3:00 parade was about to start so we walked down Main Street and were able to get right up front for the floats to come by.
p.jpegq.jpegr.jpeg

We had lightning lane for Peter Pan, Mickey's Philharmagic, and Tiana. We went and rode Peter and Mickey's. We were trying hard to get Snow White but it was 100 min at all times. We had Tiana later so we did Country Bears. I don't know what it was but I loved that show. We were enamored lol. I guess we hadn't seen it for many, many years but it was adorable!

s.jpeg

It was getting colder and colder which is why we could get our lightning lane for Tiana but we were up for it. J took off her sweatshirt and rolled up her sleeves so she wouldn't have wet clothes. It made for a hilarious ride pic.

t.jpeg

We kept trying to get other lightning lane reservations and could not get anything. We finally decided to leave around 6 and go back to the hotel and get dinner.

We ended up getting on a bus to the Swan which took almost an hour with the waiting and ride. We went into the hotel and it was hopping. Tons of convention people. We went to Il Mulina and sat at the bar. We got a couple of cocktails and ordered a Rustica pizza. We had another round of drinks and it was amazing how quickly the convention crowd cleared out after 8:00 pm. Total of 20,000 steps today and a bedtime of 9:00 pm. We are realizing we aren't the spring chickens we used to be lol.

Day 3

Before we went to bed last night we looked at Lightning Lane and wanted to book some Hollywood Studios rides and get there at the opening to try to get on the Star Wars rides. As we looked we realized we couldn't get anything great at the studios so booked rides at Epcot later in the day. Our morning priority was to get to HS at rope drop and head to Star Wars land.

We took the boat to Hollywood Studios and it was a cold and beautiful morning. This pic was taken around 8:10 am.

u.jpeg

We were on a mission to get on the Star Wars rides so we hopped off the boat and beelined for Star Wars land. We got in line for Rise of the Resistance with about a 30 minute wait. We waited all that time and maybe more but absolutely worth it. One of the best rides based on overall entertainment that I've ever been on. We ran straight over to Millennium Falcon. We were really worried about being pilots. That's a lot of pressure lol. When we got to the line there was a 60 min wait but the single rider line was open to double riders. Who knew? We were made whatever the last people are - engineers or whatever? A mom and daughter were the pilots and the mom was horrible lol. The daughter was yelling at her the whole time. I mean we were hitting everything and it was a lot of bouncing around. I was laughing throughout so it was amusing and worth the time :).

v.jpegw.jpegx.jpeg

We looked all around Star Wars land then walked out and started checking wait times for other rides in the park. We decided to head into Toy Story land and grab some food and see if we can do any of the rides. We went to Woody's Lunchbox and I got a Totchos Bowl and J got a grilled cheese. They were both fine and filled our stomachs. My tots were a tad too cooked so I left a lot of them but the eggs and gravy were good.

We decided to do the 40 min wait for Slinky Dog. And it was all of 40 min. In a boring queue. Quite tortuous lol. The ride was super cute and the coaster was actually fun enough. Not thrilling but had some fun parts. We did like it.

We looked at the app for anything we might be able to hop on and everything was over an hour wait I was truly bummed I couldn't get on Toy Story Mania, it's been one of my favs forever but the line was always over a hour.

We decided to move on to Epcot and grab Lightning Lane rides there. We got Remy, Spaceship Earth, and Test Track. None of the headliners were available, even when we tried them a few days ago. We learned our lesson with Lightning Lane, if you are going to pay you have to book the second your window is available.

Stay tuned for the second half of Day 3.....
