Quick answer needed--using a box for checked luggage on SW Air

We're leaving in 3 days, so a quick answer would be appreciated.

1. Would SW Air check in a box instead of a suitcase as checked luggage? We have a couple of things in which a box is the best way to carry them.

2. If we do use the box and put ME tags on the box for luggage pick-up, would that work OK? We have a couple of extra ME tags and I'm thinking of putting one on each side of the box (since there isn't a handle) in the hope that it wouldn't get overlooked.

No problem, just make sure the dimensions and weight of the box comply with SWs rules.

No reason to put extra tags on the box. Airlines and DME handle boxes on a daily basis.

Remember to pack a roll of packing tape if you intend to use the box coming home.

Southwest will (or would, in 2006 at least) accept a carton as checked luggage. We had a mini fridge swap, and the first person was able to bring the boxed refrigerator on Southwest because it was below both the size and weight limits.

I would put each tag on two sides, without cutting. Put half of one tag on the top of the box, and fold the other half down the adjacent side. Then put the other tag half on the opposite side plus half on the bottom of the box. Do this all VERY carefully, and remove all the backing (in stages). Press firmly.

Each end of each tag is identical - so following the above instructions will/should display all the necessary information on four of the six sides of the box. You can also write "this end up" with accompanying arrows on each of the two blank sides.

Thank you for the advice! We're still mulling over whether to check a box. We found an old duffle bag (not too big for carry-on regulations) that could be dh's carry-on, and if we put those items in the duffle bag I think that'll work OK.
