Question for DVC Owners

Do you find it pretty easy or difficult to get reservations at DVC's that aren't your "home" property? Our family has thought about possibly doing this, and when I look at the point schedule, I wonder if buying in at Saratoga or AK, will getting rooms at say, Boardwalk be possible? We generally would travel during slower times for Disney.

The times I have reserved outside of my home resort in off season I have been able to get into the resort I wanted to, and as it happens, it was BWV's. But I have called exactly at the 7 month window for those resorts. Having said that though, sometimes the least busy times for WDW are the most busy times for DVC! Early December, F&W festival- all times when DVC is tough to book.

The overall philosophy of DVC is "Buy where you want to stay".

Jberry -- great question, but you should try the DVC-Operations or DVC-Planning boards to get access to the hard-core DVCers.

Thank you both. I will need to check that DVC discussion forum out.

We have done a few split stays and had great luck (for 3 trips) getting a room besides our home resort at the 7 month window, calling day to day to make sure. We have done BVC and BWC. We have also had great luck w/the waitlist. I think some rooms are easier to book than others. Studios and grand villas may be a bit trickier, depending on location. Good luck with your decision....we love DVC and the service and rooms assigned have been excellent.

Absolutely true. Alot depends on when, where & what room type. BWV & VWL have fewer units while OKW & SSR have the most for now. Also, how far out you are able to plan. Some people can only plan 3-4 months out as opposed to 11 or 7.

Lots more info on the DVC boards... check 'em out.

Generally if you are travelling during the slower months you've got a good chance. We brought into BCV's but we also love the VWL & OKW. We've had excellent luck getting into those two places but I know times like Christmas, food & wine festival and NYE are impossable to get 7 months out.

I have told many of my friend that just got DVC to always book at their home resort at the 11 month window. Then at the 7 month window to try to move the room to a different resort day by day and they have to call at 9 am when member services opens. They have always had good luck with this. Just one time they did not get the room they wanted and went on the wait list and got it. Again as others have said sometimes slower times for WDW is not always a slow time for DVC. Hope this helps

We bought at OKW in 2005 and have stayed there a few times but also managed to get VWL over Christmas, Vero Beach, BWV and BCV in August

I haven't had any trouble getting reservations at OKW, VB or HHI. I haven't tried any of the other resorts at WDW, because I'm really happy at my home resort! (I own at SSR and have stayed there nearly every time I go!)

We bought into Saratoga Springs in 2005. So far we've stayed at our home resort and at the Boardwalk. I'm very happy with Saratoga, but the Boardwalk was nicer for us. I intend to stay at every resort over time :)

The typical advice is to buy where you'd like to stay and I'd second that. I wish we had bought into it when the Boardwalk was for sale, but am quite happy where I am. Who knows, maybe I'll like the Wilderness Lodge or another resort even better!

At least buy where you won't mind staying if you can't get anywhere else. As the number of DVC members increases, it will only get tougher and tougher to get a reservation after 7 months at the smaller resorts like VWL and BCV. If you have a smaller contract that you can bank and borrow and go every three years, you could make those 11 month reservation days. That's what we do with our 100 point contracts at VWL and BCV.
