We don't have our ressies yet.. we can't make them until the 7 month window. I was reading on another thread however that the beaches could take a long time to repair and that unsafe items were being washed up on shore.

I don't mean to sound like I am over-reacting.. I am just clueless as to how long it will take for the beach to be "rebuilt" and how long it takes before things "settle down" so nails, glass, car parts are no longer being washed up, and making the ocean less than terrific to be in.

We were planning on going the first half of June for a few days, but if any of you vero/ocean "experts" think there will still be issues in June.. we will just try to add a few days on at our home resort instead.

I love Vero.. it is a beautiful relaxing place, but if the beach isn't going to be what it was by that time I would rather just stay at WDW, because the beach is the whole reason we go to Vero.

What do ya'll think?

I have no idea about the length of time it will take Mother Nature to "repair" what she has done.

Just wondering if you have considered reserving both VB and your home resort? That way, you could wait for more information / first hand reports. VB is scheduled to re open in November and there are several DIS'rs who have said they plan to visit yet this year. Also, I truly expect that we will get some kind of report from the Resort Managment at the annual condo meetings. Reports from those should show up very quickly on the DVC Forum after the meeting ends - at least they have in the past few years.

Anyway, there's still plenty of time to cancel your reservation should you decide against staying at VB in June. Unless you have to borrow points to "cover the bases", my advice is to keep your options open for now.

Best wishes -

I don't honestly know how long it will take to get the beaches back in shape:( I too though worry about Vero in particular as I've heard reports of a "live land mine" washing up on shore there:eek: The other debris you mention is a concern as well, but that's the one that really scares me.:earseek:

Maybe you could make your ressie at the 7month mark so that you have it and when the date gets closer decide if you should keep it based on the most current updates. Have a few back ups ready so that if you do want to switch your ressie to WDW DVC's you have a few to choose from if availibility ends up being tough. I would imagine that being that you're looking at June, Vero would be the tougher one to get into for that time of year with not having too great a problem on shorter notice at the DVC's at WDW.

Sorry if this wasn't much help, but that's the route I'd personnally take.

Best of luck and Pixie dust and let us know how you make out. Hopefully, they get the clean ups done in time for the much warmer weather::yes::

We have reservations for April at Vero. Made them at 7 months (no problems). I figure...even if the beach looks basically like it does today...I can still go to VB and have a wonderful time at the resort. As long as the pool and slide are open...my kids will be thrilled. I'm hoping there won't be any long term problems with the restaurants (doubtful...and usually easily fixed)...but we can work around it if they aren't open for some reason.

We too have ressies for spring break in April. The beach would be great but if it has to be pool and slide...no problem...I'm still on vacation!

May I suggest that the ocean always has things washing up, and possible items one might step on etc. Perhaps some pairs of watershoes would take care of any concerns on the beach. You used to be able buy them in the gift shop for $10. I think you'll be fine. Very nice ones are available through lands end. I'd think that would take care of any problems.

They are cleaning things up while we speak. I can't say for sure how long things will take, especially the replenishment of the beaches, but it will be an on-going process that has already begun. Since tourism is vital to the entire area, repair of the beaches is a top priority. The conditions that exist at the moment with lots of debris on the beach will only be short-term. I would guessestimate that things will be pretty much back to normal by the first of the year and will be much improved over current conditions within a few weeks.

Here's a report from Peggy Fisher's Seaside Scoop

Disney Good News from Bill Barron of Boppy’s: The heavy equipment at Wabasso is from Disney which is already moving in the big guns to re-nourish their beach. Bill says in the past Disney has brought in an extra load or two of sand to help Wabasso. That would be wonderful; it would be great as well if they’d help clean up some of the debris. It’s a shared beach; what affects Wabasso impacts Disney. It was already much easier and safer to reach the beach via the great sand ramp Disney workers deposited Friday.

Bill confirms what beachgoers have noted with amazement; the week-long Northeasterner brought more sand to our beaches instead of taking it away as usually happens with these winter storms.

I'm with you there Katie. We're going in January, and no matter what the condition of the beach, I am sure we'll have agreat time. Hey, and it could be long-lost treasure washing up on the beach, not just junk. They don't call it the Treasure Coast for nothing.

I'll report on beach conditions in January, but Peggy Fisher's ongoing reports are awefully handy. Just wondering what a "week-long Northeasterner" would look like - or is that weak, long Northeasterner? - maybe a 6'5" really skinny guy from New Hampshire or something? Now them aweful storms we get 'round here we call Nor'Easters - rarely weak, but they are long :teeth:.

Seriously tho, I really appreciate the reports I see on here from Peggy Fisher about the area around our beloved VB.

Thanks Pam for taking the time to seek out these reports and fill us in. I am glad to see Disney moving forward with beach repair. However, I would venture to say that the repair is more for stabilization of the berm (and cottages) than it is for our beach walking pleasure.

It will be interesting to see how far along they are by the 8th.

We plan to stay there next Monday through Thursday and will be home in Tampa on Thursday evening 11/11. I will try to post a report either Thursday night or on Friday 11/12 on what we find.

I understand in certain areas there has been construction debris on the beaches and in the water - more than water shoes will protect against, but I have also heard beaches in the area are slwoly opening. The public beach at Sebastian Inlet is open and the jaycee beach in vero is open. Wabasso public beach is still closed. No info from Disney at all.

Here is what the treasure hunters site is saying about vero area, on www.treasuredepot.com:

Talked with the local police chief that patrols from Wabasso beach to Vero. With some exceptions in Vero most of the beach access points will be closed for several more months and some may open up early next year. Most of he beaches themselves are open, but not the access. Solictiting access from private property owners is also an ordinance violation. He also told me that no digging of any kind is allowed through the end of November. This is their rule to protect the turtle nests. None of which survived the storms. *****They can not run anyone off the beach who is not digging holes. *****I worked the beach a week after the last storm and came across many very deep holes. Not filling them gives the environmentalist and condo kings ammunition to close down metal detecting. Fill those holes. Open access can change if enough people complain to the right people in this area. To protect our sport and gain access does anybody know who we need to lodge our concerns with about beach access. Please post it.

In Response To: Vero beaches (FL-Turbine)
My partner and I went down to the sheriff's office to find out why one of their deputy dawg boys was ticketing cars and tossing beach hunters out. Got written permission to hunt beaches, but must not park near access points, due to LOTS of heavy machinery working to clear what's left of the town and state parks. Awesome amounts of sand and debris came over the duneline and covered the areas with up to 4 ft. of sand, etc. Hundreds of trees taken out by storms made for a nightmare beachline. Lots of hazards also; pieces of walkways, decks, piers, and boards with nails and bolts sticking out everywhere. Saw someones house door and a large couch in the trees yesterday! Beach is sanded in again now. Be CAREFUL out there. Waterdog

I look forward to your report as information specific to the resort has been hard to come by....we arrive on the 20th. I hope all goes well for you there. :)

I also look forward to your report. We are scheduled to arrive at Vero Beach on November 20-22 after 7 nights at WDW.
