i was wondering if they have fresh leis at the polynesian resort and if so are there any available for purchase? i'm looking for something special occasion wise and that would be wonderfully convenient! tia! :thumbsup2

The ones they give you when you check in are not fresh although for fake, they look pretty good. No idea if they sell them.

On our last day, we had breakfast at Kona Cafe. As we left the resort off to the right were two ladies making lei's. So they have them.

Hello Black Dog!

In all the years we've been staying at the Poly we've never seen fresh leis being handed out. The very first time we went, back many years ago, we were actually given shell leis ... which are hanging right above my head as I type this! :wizard: :thumbsup2

The only way I could see you getting actual real live flower leis would be to contact a florist ... like DisneyFlorist.com ... and see if they'd make them for you ... which they probably would ... for a price. Bottom line, it's all about the money and it is MUCH more economical for Disney to have the fake leis which never go bad and are probably a tenth of the price of real ones.

Hope it helped! Take Care & Be Safe!

thanks! yea... i was pretty sure they were not the real deal but hopeful that someone on grounds made them... i think i may be calling the florist tomorrow! we lived in hawaii for a couple of years and i would love to have a lei made for my daughters birthday :flower3: we'll see!

Yes, they do have real lei's We had just finished dinner at ohana and my husband asked at the front desk for a lei for my birthday they had the fake ones laying up there and she said wait a minute i have something special for you. She brought me out a beautiful real flower lei, It smelled so good!! So the do have them. This was this past February.

I agree! They look pretty good for being "fake" and it's cool for the kids to see them making them each day :)

Walt would be proud! actually probably rolling over in his grave...as a child I remember going to the POLY and being given a REAL flower lei...and how special it made me feel.. when I took my family back...(now as a parent) I totally felt cheated..with the plastic flowers and the CRAPPY sound system in the luau ...and the terrible plotline....anyways....if walt was around it would be different for sure...he was all about the IMMERSION into another time/place...not feeling it with the *plastic flowers*.....I actually am going to the poly in about two months & am seriously struggling with even doing the luau because i sooo dislike what they have done to it so very much... (more plastique flowers at the luau...really? I pay 200$bucks for my family of four and I dont get REAL flowers...sorry...)

Yep, they still have them! The Hawaiian ladies make a few each day, so the quantities are very, very limited. We saw a bride and groom get them as they were checking-in the other day, and a cast member said they have them to give out for a few special occasions each day - newlyweds, big anniversaries, etc. I'm sure if you asked the front desk, they could get one for your daughter if they have any left that day. If not, ask if they could hold one for you for the next day. The worst thing they can say is they don't have any :)

I agree with you Mikki ...

Listen, I understand that Disney is in it for the money ... that they have stock holders that they are beholden to but why does it seem like they always have to take out those tiny little touches?

Just for argument's sake let's forget the Luau. How about the people that are STAYING at the Poly and paying 4 or 5 or 6 hundred dollars per night (Depending on what your getting and what season it is) ... would it be asking too much to give each guest a real flower lei when they check-in?

In the grand scheme of things is it really breaking their bank? Just like at Sci-Fi ... what happened to the little basket of popcorn they used to give you?

Sometimes it's the little touches that make it ... I wish they would stop taking the proverbial sprinkles off my ice cream! :thumbsup2

Anyway, take care & be safe!

Thanks frank...and agree...accept...YKNOW...I dont ACTUALLY think that DISNEY was in it for the money...really I don't...
he really wasnt...it really was all about the betterment of man....that the spirit of man was greater than the almighty dollar....

However....my basic point is that WALT Disney wasnt an accountant....He never would have BUILT the empire he did if he was a bean counter...thats for sure....I just wish some in his current empire would UNDERSTAND that concept...

UGH and the fact that I would have to call a FLORIST...to get something like this is BEYOND preposterous...and SO not disney.

Wow, how Walt has been elevated in death. In reality, Walt was not a very nice man. And he most certainly was, first and foremost, a capitalist. If you study him, it is amazing how many of his decisions focused solely on profit. (for example, 1 reason Disney World has so much land, was because he wanted to keep competitors away... Didn't want off site hotels to compete with his business, etc).
Walt would be quite proud of Disney's maximization of profit.

poly says they do not have any fresh lei available. through the florist $75 for a strand of traditional plumeria, $45 for carnations.

Just wanted to clear this up because of all of the different things being written. I can tell you that I am 100% certain that the information below is correct ;)

There are fresh leis made each day at the Polynesian. They are made by hand, so there are only a few available. It was correct when someone wrote that because of this, they are only given out for big milestones to the guests.

The cost is not the reason that they are not given to everyone. It is the time. On an average day there are between 150 -250 rooms that check in. Let's multiply that by 4 guests in each room. You are looking at roughly 800 people a day. That would be 800 hand made leis. Making a fresh flower lei is not something that you just slap together, it is an art form and a large part of Polynesian culture. I don't know how any of you could expect 2 women, even though they are very skilled, to whip up 800 leis a day.

Please try to remember that even though you might think it is, NOT EVERYTHING IS ABOUT MONEY!

On another note, you can also order them through the florist. These ones are really very beautiful and are made of plumeria rather than carnations. They might cost a lot, but if you would really like one I think these are a really lovely option.

I remember seeing a lady making beautiful leis in the lobby one morning over in the children's tv area.

This is a great answer. Not every "shortcut" is about being cheated by Disney. Some people would say that they should have a full team of 20-30 lei-makers working away all day in some special room at the Poly, so every guest gets a real flower lei. ;) I can definitely understand wanting one for a special occasion, but I have never found that my "fake" lei detracts from enjoying myself at the Poly.

I think I'm just going to check at the desk the a day or two prior when we are over there... $75 is too much and I'm not too sure I want to do $50 either whether shipped direct from HI or the carnation one from the florist. I'm just going to leave this one to pixie dust. She has a lot coming already so it won't break her day by any means... just thought it would be magical if it worked in right... thanks so much for all of the input :)

In 2006 when we were staying at the Poly, we were given the real flower leis from the staff. It was our 15th Wedding Anniversary and were on our way to eat at Victoria & Albert's that night. I have posted the picture below. You can see the leis in the picture. They were carnations, but very beautiful, we kept them in the refrigerator when we got home and they lasted a long time in there.

Hi Blackdogg,

My DH and I visited Maui in September, 2000. We received fresh leis as we exited our plane. The leis were complimentary. One of the leis was destroyed in our luggage on the way home, but I wore the other one home and it still remains, obviously dried, on our bed post. I understand completely that $75, $50, etc...seems steep, but if you take good care of it, it will last a loong time. I am not exaggerating when I tell you that every time I look at my lei I think of our trip to Maui, 11 years ago :lovestruc.
I have read this thread with interest, and while I understand everyone's sentiment regarding pricing, perhaps your daughter's lei will turn into a memory...
