Pawn shop?

have you ever purchased anything at a pawn shop? DHs truck was broken into and many items were stolen. iPod, 2ham radios and all the cables that go with them. His custom floor liners and other odds and ends. Even his stocking cap was stolen .

I would like to replace some of the items, but all together is was nearly a thousand dollars of stuff if we were to replace everything with new. So, I am thinking of checking out the local pawn shops to see if anything can be replaced with used.

Thoughts on this?

I visited a Pawn America near one of our local malls and the prices were pretty high! You would do best to try Craigslist.

My DH buys stuff at the pawn shop all the time. I think prices are negotiable. He never pays asking price. Be prepared to walk if you can't get the price you want. Our city has several pawn shops too so you can always go somewhere else.

Went into a pawn shop once or twice, the prices seemed very high, also seemed to have a sleazy feel to it.

Full of broken dreams, that's how they always feel to me. Of course I haven't been to one since they became chains.

OP, do you have Homeowners insurance? Though the deductible probably wouldn't be worth it to make a claim.

I would hit thrift stores, yard sales, eBay, Craig's list before I'd consider a Pawn Shop. Research how much these items actually cost before doing anything. I bet you can find a lot of that stuff new on sale right now.

No, because I find them sleazy and most of the stuff they are selling is stolen.

Oh, I bet you could, those are exactly the kind of things you might find in a thrift store. Do you have a Goodwill around? Also try places that refurbish/repair electronics. For the Ham Radios maybe try putting an ad out that you're looking for some. People can't bring themselves to throw them away but figure people don't want them so they just hang onto them.

I buy all my handguns and power tools at two different pawn shops in town. You can negotiate and get great deals on quality items.

Were the tools marked with names or certain numbers? Pawn shops are required to hold items for 30 days I think it is to make sure they are not stolen.

Back from the pawn shop. Strike out on finding the things I want to replace. They had a lot of tools and computer equipment as well as musical instruments and home entertainment systems. But no ham radios or music storage devices.

Was worth a look while out running errands. Will try online.

Btw, the items were not marked with a name and if they had serial numbers, DH does not have a record of it.

We did not make a police report. We knew we would not be making a claim against insurance and otherwise we don't see the value in filing the report. It's a petty crime that would never be investigated, taking the time to file a report wastes the time of the police officer and our time.

Craigslist is your best bet for replacing things used.

I would still file a police,report. It,puts the police on notice of crime in your area and they may be able to,send an alert to your neighbors to lock their doors, and maybe have extra patrols in the area.

I would ask around about the iPod. Many people you know might be upgrading iPod or iPhones this time of year. You could offer what they'd get for a trade in and a friend of family member might be willing to make you a deal.

Although, if there was any damage to the truck, that plus the value of getting new items might be worth paying the deductible.

Filing a police report gives the police a record of the crimes occurring in your area. Could be that there are more victims. And if they get the stuff back it could be returned. I would do it for the information it gives the police dept. if nothing else.

Is there any chance insurance might cover this?

I have never been overly impressed by pawnshops. They seem to be much more impressive on TV than they really are.
