I've had an extreme pounding headache at the base of my skull since last night. I took an 800 mg ibuprofen last night and went to bed, woke up and it's still here. Took another 800mg but it's def not touched it much.

Am i able to take anything on top of that? Is anything gonna work?

You can take Tylenol. I normally try Tylenol first when my arthritis is acting up because my stomach is in really bad shape. My doctor has told me that if it doesn't work in an hour or so, I can go ahead and take an ibuprofen. They work differently so it is OK.

Do you think tylenol will touch it? I have some from when I was pregnant but it never seemed to do anything so I haven't bothered taking it anymore.

Yeah my stomach's not thrilled with the ibuprofen either.

Yes, you can take tylenol, but if your headache doesn't subside after 800 mg of ibuprofen, I would have it checked out.

Well thats good to know. I have a messed up knee and sometimes the 800 mg doesn't help at all. I'll try that next time. :)

Ibuprofen and acetaminophen do not counteract, so they are safe to take. Take a tylenol first, and then in two hours take an ibuprofen. So, alternate. I do it for my migraines as recommended by my doctors. My pediatrician recommended it to keep my daughter's fevers down as well as she gets very high fevers.

The next time you have a pounding headache, don't bother with ibuprofen or Tylenol. Go straight for the Excedrin (which is basically a mix of aspirin, Tylenol and caffeine). Ibu wouldn't touch a headache for me.

Good luck- hope you got rid of it!

You can take a dose of acetaminophen. When I get a headache that doesn't respond to 800 mg of ibuprofen I wait 6-8 hours and try Excedrin if that fails I end up in the ER.

Do you usually get headaches like this? I hope you get some relief! If it doesn't let up perhaps you need to see your Dr.

Nope, I have never EVER had one. A friend suggested tension headache? I dunno. It hurts. *whine cry*

And I know getting off the comp would probably help but moving gets the blood flowing and it feels like it's pounding into my skull. I'm getting up the nerve to get a diet coke and go lay down. haha

Oh and thank you. someone else suggested excedrin for this type of pain too so I think I'll pick some up (um.ok not ME..husband? hah). We've never used it.

Severe headaches, especially in people who don't typically have headaches, warrant a visit to the doctor.

I use excedrine sinus for my bad sinus headaches and it works very well. They do have a specific one for tension headaches.
Excedrine is acetaminophen, the sinus one contains a nasal decongestant. I would assume teh tension was has added medicine so I would just make sure they were okay to take ith the IB if you decide to go that route.

Ok so that link just said that numbness or tingling is a sign of migraine. Last night my whole left side got tingly and numb so maybe it's just a migraine?

Okay cool. I'll have DH ask the pharmacist..tho by the time he gets it for me the Ibuprofen will be out of my system...maybe..

Skip the Diet Coke, go for the full sugar version. The artificial sweetner can cause headaches. I find a cup of coffee with sugar and the ibuprofin help, maybe the warmth of the coffee:confused3

I woke up with a skull splitting migraine today. I took 2 Excederin and got some coffee. A lot of times the combination is all it takes to make the pain go away. If it doesn't work I'll switch to the 800 mg ibuprofen. My DH gets severe migraines and swears by the Excederin and a vanilla milkshake. There is something in the vanilla bean that actually has a medicinal effect on headaches. Gatorade has also been helpful for his migraines. I have tried the milkshake and it really does work.
