OT- Dandruff Problem

My DH has recently been having problems with dandruff, i got him some Head and Shoulders and thought that would solve it. But, after about a week of using it, he has seen no change at all. Does anyone have any other ideas (hopefully somewhat budget)? TIA!

How about Selsun Blue? My older brother used to have dandruff problem, and he started using Selsun Blue and that seem to have taken care of it. I have also used Selsun Blue with my daughter when she had cradle cap as a baby.

I second Selsun Blue -- Head and Shoulders makes no difference for me, but Selsun Blue is amazing.

We have used Denorex at our house after Head and Shoulders did nothing. Cleared it right up. It's about $6.00 for a bottle at walmart, walgreens, etc.

Listerine! Old plain kind! Pour as close to scalp as possible and let set while showering and then rinse. May be repeat as needed. We have used this remedy in my family for generations! Works every time!

Listerine and baby oil in a spray bottle. Spritz the scalp every night. Shampoo as usual.

Thank you so much for starting this post!!! DS, 12, has developed a really big problem with dandruff. I'm hoping it is a hormonal change ... but it's embarassing for him and I never let him wear black or dark shirts to school!!
We've been using selsun blue for 3 days and have noticed an improvement but I'm definitaley going to try the listerine!!!

This is what my dermatologist recommended for my psoriasis. 2 or 3 times a week put some on, let it sit for a few minutes, rinse, and shampoo as usual. It smells awful, but I have had really good results making it worth it.

I would look for trial sizes, some of these get expensive. My oldest DS has dandruff and when we found out, we started checking out shampoos. We started with Neutrogena T something with tar in it, with little effect. We then went to Selsun Blue, I got a phone call from the school nurse that he was in there and that his scalp was itching so bad that it was red. He was checked for lice, didn't find any but the red scalp was very evident. We then tried Head & Shoulders, this works for him. I've never heard of the Listerine treatment, I would be willing to try if he didn't already have a bad reaction while trying to treat this. I guess we stick with what works for him.

Soak and Float from Lush !

It is a bar shampoo, and it smells, exactly like a camp fire, however I had dandruff, psorasis, and dermatitis on my scalp for YEARS, and Soak and Float is the only thing to take care of it for me.

It is 10.00 a bar, and a bar lasts me a month.

Totally worth it though !

You might check with a hairdresser or doctor/dermatologist. There are two types of dandruff. Different treatments are used depending on the type - is his hair/scalp dry or oily? A family member has the oily type and none of the OTC dandruff shampoos do anything as they increase the scalp oils. We find the best results with a clarifying shampoo. Right now it is herbal Essence Drama Clean.

My aunt used to have bad dandruff and has gone through all the shampoos and stuff. But she managed to damage her scalp so bad from 30 years of using those products, that she only uses it some of the time with regular shampoo in between.

My hair is thin enough, I don't want to ruin it more. So I've never used any special products. Sometimes it gets bad, but it usually doesn't last long and I just let it be. It's not like every one and their mother hasn't had dandruff before. I really don't get why people get so upset over it.

I had a dermatologist tell me several years ago that it was best to get something with tar in it (like Neutrogena T-Gel). Denorex used to be wonderful, but they no longer make it with tar (and it was absolutely the best before). Walmart makes their own version of the Neutrogena product at a much lower price.

As you can see from all the recommendations, what works for one person doesn't work for another. And sometimes, you'll find something that works for a while, then you'll need to switch products when it seems that one isn't as effective anymore.

Unfortunately, it might just be an issue of trial and error to find what works best for your DH. We've tried many things in my household and have found that a rotation of a few different brands works best for us.

If the dandruff shampoos don't work, you might want to check with a dermatologist or doctor and make sure it isn't psoriasis. My oldest ds had to use steroid shampoos for this.

i used this for a summer when i had some type of horrible eczema above my ear. it worked miracles for me! luckily that was a one summer thing and i haven't had a recurrence since.

DD had it too when she was in her teens. Selsun Blue worked for a while, then we switched to a Paul Mitchell product I got at the salon. That worked well. She basically out grew it though.

You might also try tea tree oil shampoo. You can find it pretty cheap at Sally's Beauty Supply or other places like that.

Walmart sells Organix Tea Tree Oil shampoo and conditioner, and I have some right now. I like it pretty well (definitely like the smell better ), but the tar shampoo still works better for me.

Still, that's another option to try!
