We live in Vermont and are looking for some great campgrounds in New England to experience this summer. If you have any favorites I would love to hear. Nothing compares to FW, but it's a bit too far for short trips. lol.

We visited a place called Cherrystone in Chesepeake, VA. It is just over the MD & Delaware borders. It was wonderful, huge & amazing. Our site was spitting distance to the Chesepeake Bay. They have crabbing & oyster plucking. Plus, some great pools & activities. I would go back in a heart beat!

We loved this campground, it was shady and really nice. From this campground we traveled to Cape Cod (Capt Jon's whale watching-we really did see several kinds of whales- water kind of rough though 2 of us did draminine) beaches, cranberry bogs, and lobster. You can also go to Boston ( we parked at a parking garage and did the Metro to downtown Boston ( National park and lots of history here). We also did Plymouth (that is close 10-15 miles to campground). We also traveled north of Boston and did Salem one day. I believe the campground does bus tours to places, we did our own. Some things are a drive away but within an hour. Look at the KOA web site but I think you will like this one. You might want to inquire about laundry prices(if you need to do laundry). I can't remember for sure but when we were on this trip I remember one campground being high for laundry. Not sure if it was this one or not.

Thanks. If anyone wants to camp in Vermont check out Sugar Ridge RV Park. It is very clean with lots of family activities. Each weekend had a theme with events scheduled around the theme. It is priced reasonably. We stay there several times each year and have never been disappointed.

I would like to recommend 2 campgrounds. The first is Wells Beach Campresort in Wells, Maine. It has full hookups, water, electric, sewer and cable. It is located very near Wells Beach, outlet shopping in Kittery, the village of Ocquinet (spelling wrong) and close to Kennebunk. There are lots of great seafood restaurants nearby and even has its own mini-golf. It is wonderful, very clean and well supervised if you have children. We love it there and will be spending a week in July.
The other is Normandy Farms in Foxboro, Mass. It has 3 pools, indoor pool and hottub, full hookups and in the summer it runs bus tours to Boston, Cape Cod and Newport. We spent time there last September and would go again if we had the time this year. But Disney is in our plans so we cannot do it.
There are so many wonderful campgrounds in New England. Hubby and I want to go to as many as possible. If only we could win the lottery and not have work interfer with our fun!

I think this KOA is in Middleboro, not Middleton, MA. Check the KOA site. Middleboro is south of Boston and is convenient to Cape Cod. Middleton is North of Boston and not near Cape Cod.

If you want to check out New Hampshire's white mountains, try Glen Ellis Campground in Glen, NH. It is a clean campground with a beautiful field and is on the Swift River. They have a pool and a playground. The campground is right in the middle of plenty of things to do.

DS13 & I have been going to Kings & Queens campground in Lebanon, Maine for quite a few yrs now.
We'll be there 4nights over July 4th

Blackwoods CG in Acadia National Park Maine is beautiful, but some would consider it primitive. It has no hookups, and you have to shower at a concession across the street from the entance. There are flush toilets and sinks in the CG bathhouses, but not showers. The scenery is surreal in its beauty. A short walk (1/4 mile at most) to the cliffs by the sea. Bar Harbor, a short drive from Blackwoods is a great resort town, and there are so many NP-related ranger walks, boat trips, etc., that you couldn't do them all in a month. Bicycling on the carriage paths (miles and miles and miles) built by John D. Rockefeller is incredible - wide, flat, and gently graded.

Make that 2 votes for the KOA in Middleboro, MA. We made the trip 2 years ago and found this campground centrally located to almost everything we wanted to see in the area - Salem, Cape Cod, Plymouth, etc. Also stayed at Salisbury State Park, enjoyed that as well, we were 2 sites off the beach, very nice.

We want to venture further north in NE (Vermont and Maine), but from Chicago, this is quite a haul, but someday.:flower: We loved our trip to MA.

Being from Maine I naturally agree with sssteele about Blackwoods and the carriage trails are wonderful!! Another nice campground on the way to Bar Harbor is Searsport Shores. It's oceanfront and the website is www.campocean.com.

Our family loves Bayley's resort in Maine. It is near Old Orchard Beach. They have a bus that will take you to and from the beach area.

It is a bit $$ for camping, but it offers all kinds of entertainment, and family activities.

We were just talking about Bayley's tonight, remembering the hypnotist they had there and how fun that was!!!

There so many great places and for different reasons. I like Hermit Island near Bath Me.. Incredibly beatiful place but no hook-ups, tents, pop-ups, and sm.truck campers only. Camp Eatons in York Beach Me. is nice, right a cross is the ocean, but a little on the crowded sided. You can't beat Matha's Vineyard for a vacation spot.

FYI: the KOA being refered to near the cape is indeed in Middleboro (also spelled Middleborough on some maps) Middleton is North of Boston. I personally don't think it's all that great, perhaps because I live in the area, perhaps because nothing can compare to FW :teeth:

I grew up camping New England just about every weekend from April though to October. Can't say I have a desire to drive more than a couple hours in the car anymore due to it :teeth:

How good a campground is really depends upon what you expect from one and the area. If you travel on weekend getaways on a regular basis, you might want to look into camping groups such as The Holiday Ramblers, Airstream and Good Sam Clubs. There are small local chapters located throughout the country that plan local weekend outings and occasionally longer cross-country trips for those who are up to it. Fees are not high and the accomodations are typically tried and true, not to mention the friendships and memories made with meeting up with the same folk all spring & summer long year ofter year. Through the club we experienced things we never would have known about and that made all the difference in how we precieved the area (Antique airshows, Horeseback trail rides, blueberry picking, Lighthouse tours, boatrides though the great lake locks, grass sledding in Goose Hollow, watching a sea cucumber "blow up" all over the kid who couldn't keep his hands still :teeth: the list is endless) With the Exception of Airstream, you don't need to own their brand of camper to join the group, only to attend "rallies".

Bayleys Campground is great for those with kids...they have plenty of activities for all ages and on weekends will have special entertainment. It is pricey however and we figured that it cost as much as Fort Wilderness. You can take the trolley to Old Orchard Beach ME which is another well known Maine destination. They do book up fast, so check it out ASAP.
