Oscars

Imagine if this happens to an individual like Emma Stone. Told she wins best actress and then has it taken away moments later. I wouldn't blame them if threw a fit.

I thought about that; in retrospect at least it was a huge group of people up there on stage because I can't imagine how it would feel to win an individual award, give an acceptance speech and then have to recover on your own... yikes!
Couldn't agree more! even if I didn't really care one way or the other who won, I would feel SO BAD for the person -- would be awful!

I forget which PP said it, but I wouldn't be surprised if this error DOES bring more attention to Moonlight. Would be some compensation. :)

In most other categories they announce the winner by name, and rarely are people nominated for 2 awards. So had they given the lead actor envelope to the person presenting lead actress, it would have said Casey Affleck and obviously been wrong. It could still happen, like someone nominated for supporting and lead for different movies, or acting and directing in the same year. But it happened to be best picture, when the presenter is only looking for a title. Apparently the outside of the envelope did say Best Actress in a Leading Roll, but the older I get, the more I can understand how it might be hard for someone backstage in low lighting and someone standing under a lot of lights to read metallic gold font on a bright red envelope.

That is exactly what happened as Emma still had the card they read for her name. Whoever took the card out of the briefcase didn't realize it was the wrong one. I'm not 100% sure who that was. It definitely wasn't the stage manager as they are in a booth for shows like this. It was either the young oscar winner (the college age kids who are the ones who walk the celebrities off stage) or the accountant themselves.

I watched the credits and saw something like 10-12 stage managers listed (coming from a theatre background I didn't realize there could be that many SMs); I feel terrible for whoever handed that card to Beatty. I hope it wasn't a career-ruining mistake.

There were 16 stage managers, and it normally be one who handed it off. Who knows if it goes straight from the hand of the accountant to the presenter while the stage manager is there, if the stage manager holds it for a few seconds, or if they take it at one location from the accountant and deliver it to the presenter somewhere else. I imagine it was pretty chaotic at the end of the show and who knows who is ultimately responsible for reading the outside of the envelope. If the stage manager had the envelope for a few seconds, I can see how it was missed. But you bet they'll be checking every envelope next year.

I couldn't agree more. I don't watch TV in order to get a lecture from some loud-mouth ego maniac

Why watch TV when I can get all that by just logging onto the Dis.

I gave up my seat on the bus today. YOU ENABLER!!! NOW EVERYONE WILL EXPECT THAT.

My son had a hair out of place today. BAD PARENT!!!

Not on the same level at all but I have a relative who was announced the winner in a local beauty pageant. She was crowned and wearing the sash when someone came to the stage and said there was a different winner. She was devastated.

ABC News just reported the wrong envelope was handed to Beatty by the PWC accountant, Brian Cullinan. Apparently last night he, Brian, had just sent a tweet out (since deleted) before handing the envelope and speculation is that he was distracted.

Well look at it this way, they gave us something to talk about that wasn't political. :hyper2: This was probably the biggest blooper in Oscar history. I remember when Steve Harvey accidentally crowned the wrong Miss Universe, he never lived it down. Poor Warren.

Thank goodness for DVR....

I have to admit I felt terrible for all involved in that ending. I thought bringing out Katherine Johnson during the Hidden Figures speech was very touching.

Doc, with all due respect, just ban the people that are causing problems and let the rest of us carry on with the Oscar discussions please. Not sure why the majority need to be punished for the actions of a few.
Good point.

Actually, I believe that DIS posters can do a lot to help manage threads like this by simply not participating in the arguments, attacks and politics. Instead of responding to those who choose that posting behavior, just use 'Report' instead of acknowledging the behavior that we all know violates DIS policy.

'Ignore' is a very useful function. Many of the reports today came from posters who had already responded in kind to the person they reported - and were awarded similar warnings. Why bother to report if you are simply going to demonstrate the same behavior with your response?

Thanks to all for the continued respectful discussion thus far! :)

I'm pretty sure there was a commercial break between Emma Stone winning Best Actress and Beatty/Dunaway appearing on stage. By that time there should have been only ONE envelope in the briefcase for him to give to Warren and Faye. Plenty of time to discard the duplicate Emma Stone envelope. Total incompetence.

Good point.
And here I thought that post might have been perceived as an attack on a moderator -- glad it wasn't! 10 yrs here and I still can't predict this stuff! Nowhere else in life do I have this issue... Maybe after 20yrs I'll totally get the DIS... :rotfl:

I didn't watch the show yesterday but have seen clips today... I felt bad for everyone involved as well. Anytime I see a play and someone makes a noticeable mistake, I feel embarrassed for them. It happens, and they clearly have to shrug it off and keep going as performers, but I'M embarrassed... weird...

OMG I feel the same exact way! Glad to know someone else does :D

maybe next year they will immediately shred the unused side-of-stage-envelope after handing one to the winner. would have thought they would have at least ripped it in half to avoid this.

It happened to Miss Universe a couple of years age. She already had the crown on her head and had to give it back

Poor girl had to endure this all alone, with millions of people watching

I also wonder if part of the reason the viewership was down is due to so many news outlets covering every aspect of it as it happens and then again the next day? Why waste 4 1/2 hours of your night watching it, when you can read a "Top 20 things you missed at the Oscars" story in 15 minutes the next morning. Don't get me wrong, I'm not this person and enjoyed watching it last night. However, my mother texted me saying she was boycotting it since she didn't want to hear politics from celebrities. (not my view, but oh well) Either way, I'm glad these movies are made and stories are told so that we can see what it's like to live in someone else's world, real or not. There was much talent in the room this year at the awards.

Well plus if all people are interested in are the big 5, they'll see that on the net right after the show.
