Keep Moving Forward: A Training Log (Comments Welcome)

I agree with you on the crap year. I am sorry for your loss. I know that can be incredibly hard. Keep running when you can. i am a firm believer that exercise is a good stress reducer.

Great that you're getting back into it! I've had ankle injuries before and I know the struggles! Good luck with all the personal battles you're fighting! As you say in the title of your training journal . . . Keep Moving Forward!

I’m so sorry for your loss and the rest of the crap year you’ve had.

Sorry for your loss and sorry to hear that this year has thrown a lot of crap at you. But it sounds like you're back on the road to running, and sometimes that one little start can really change things around. I hope things only get better from here.

Sorry to hear about the loss of your brother. Hopefully we see the turnaround that we all so very much want for this year begin before the calendar switches over.

Hollywood loves a reboot.

Jurassic Park, Star Wars, Ghostbusters, Road House, Planet of the Apes. Our childhood favorites never really seem to go away.

Why?

1. It's easy - why create new characters, new stories, and take chances with something different when you can go back to the formula that worked in the past. Who cares if the characters are older, greyer, out of shape?

2. Nostalgia is a powerful drug. When we truly love something from our childhood, I think in some small way, we keep chasing that feeling - Luke blowing up the Death Star, the T. Rex appearing over the fence, etc.

All this is to say, runDisney is calling me back. I'm rebooting, relaunching, reloading, whatever you want to call it. And let's face it, the reboot is rarely as good as the original - in this case, the main character has lost some spring in his step and put on a few pounds - but I'm hoping the audience will forgive me.

Four years ago, I said I was retiring from runDisney and the Disboards. I needed to step away. Do something different. Find new motivation. I was suffering from Disney fatigue and frankly, after some major changes in my life, Disney lost some importance for me. I took a hard break and I should probably apologize to a few people for how I made that break, but if there's any former smokers reading, you'll appreciate the value of going cold turkey.

But even four years ago, I couched my retirement a little bit. I think I compared it to Brett Farve or Roger Clemens - I was going to retire, but I knew back then I'd probably come back.

So, why now? For starters, 2027 will be the anniversary of my first marathon and my first runDisney event, the 2017 Walt Disney World Marathon. I also said four years ago I'd probably be back in five years and I'm nothing if not punctual.

I'm also getting older. After 20 marathons, my legs hurt more. In 2024, I developed some pain in my hamstring that has yet to be fully resolved. I slogged through three more marathons, but my performance has suffered. Recently, I've developed pain in my other leg - if I sit for too long, I get very stiff and achy.

I don't know how many marathons, or races in general, I have left in me. I'm tentatively planning to run Detroit in October, Disney in a year and then, who knows? Hanging up the running shoes for good? I hope not, but I truly can't say it's a possibility forever.

One way or another, MW2027 will likely be my last runDisney event. I want to spend the next year doing it "right." At home, that means trying to get back into fighting shape or as close to it as my body will allow. In this corner of the Internet, that means hopefully being a little more active on Disboards for the next year. And in Disney World in January 2027, that means going big before going home: Dopey.

I sincerely hope to see a reunion of Rogue Two and the Goof Troop Roving Road Party - at least in the corrals, Hurricane Hannah's, etc. The people make Marathon Weekend and I'll endeavor to do my best to keep up with them.

I don't know if anyone will see these posts, but I'll try to share some here, too.

For now, I'll just say this:

It's good to be back.
