Some people just don't like being called out on their racism, homophobia, antisemitism, misogynistic views. It upsets them.

Yeah no kidding. It's like they know they are in the wrong so they hide being vague wording and pretend they were misunderstood or misconstrued. If there's nothing wrong with what someone is saying, they wouldn't need to do that.

If someone is looking for fluffy entertainment and an escape from reality, the films represented at the Oscars are probably not what they're looking for. Many of these films have powerful messages meant to reflect the human condition, and these speeches are just another facet of that. I said in another thread, the speeches I saw were about inclusivity, diversity, strength in the face of adversity and having empathy; how can that possibly be seen as too political?

I agree that many were echoing the themes of their films. Political seems to be a large term that encompasses a variety of things that people don't agree with. But in reality, entertainment is political. Before anything is put on film there are labor negotiations and government permits and incentives. Then the profits get put back into candidates and causes that keep the industry running. Anyone who is buying a ticket or paying for cable or really consuming most media is feeding the Hollywood elites and the causes they're donating to. At some point it's not a stretch that they're going to express those views when being rewarded by their industry.

I'll break the trend here and say that I love the show, including (especially?) The political stuff.

I can't imagine them being called on stage to accept the award, getting there to just say "thank you" and leave. How dull!

I agree. I don't like it as much when it's negative political talk, but I didn't see much if any of that last night. Just positivity.

I'm boycotting the Oscars for picking The Arrival as a Best Picture nominee. That movie sucked.

I liked it! I don't think it should win or probably even be nominated as best picture, but I think it was a good movie.

This seems like an oddly polarizing film! My kids and DH loved it, I really didn't.

I haven't finished watching my recording yet, but so far I have enjoyed the show immensely.

I'm also amused by how many people who clearly do not like the Oscars and had no intention of watching felt the need to come in an Oscars post just to bash the concept. Do people do that with other shows? Is the "This is Us" thread full of people coming in to say they don't watch it and think it's dumb?

Mistakes happen. No one should lose their job over that mistake. I'm sure it will be all over the news tomorrow but honestly, who cares which movie won best picture.

Actors, directors, producers, other involved in movie making, as well as those who enjoy watching, analyzing, etc movies?

Not sure if here but there is something referred to as "hate tweeting" and "hate watching" where people will watch t.v. shows and just tweet or talk about how terrible it is. I wish I had that much time to waste in life to spend so much energy purposely doing something I dislike and spend the whole time complaining about it. It happens in the Disney sphere as well.

I will say I did not like Kimmel and hope he doesn't come back. Of course I don't like him in general as I find he often crosses the line of joke and bully. I really wish they would stop referring to the science and technology awards as "nerd" awards. Most of those went to advances that made a lot of movies possible.

I feel bad that Moonlight got cheated out of their moment. Yes they won and got to give their speeches but it will never be the same as if it had been announced properly. Of course 89 years with no mistake it was bound to happen at some point just sad it happened last night.

Overall I really enjoyed the winners. I was so happy Fantastic Beasts won for costume. The HP films never really get any Oscar love so no one expected it to win even though the costume work is beautiful.

Personally, I am proud of anyone who uses a platform to speak up on any issue they feel is important enough.

I respectfully disagree.

Example, a church invites the community to a Christmas event. The program ends and the pastor goes on an unexpected rant afterward about sinful lifestyles (in detail) and hell. He just abused the platform, so disgusted with him, not proud. Don't care if it was in his church. He took advantage of his audience (with opposing views) and intentionally hijacked the event.

Same with these presenters/accepters. They want to have their big self-righteous moment and be rude because they hold the mic. They are no different than the preacher.

The truth may be the truth, but there's a time and place for it.

Hard to say how much the political speeches have affected ratings. Maybe not related at all, as I read a while back that Golden Globes ratings were better than last year (they were up against less competition this year, apparently - e.g. NFL last year).

Anecdotally, I've never heard so many people complain about this aspect. But that's just anecdotally...

The only 2 remotely political speeches were due to two foreign artists who couldn't accept their awards because one (Khaled Khatib) had his passport revoked by Syria and the other (Asghar Farhadi) refused to come in solidarity since he was initially banned earlier this year and even though it has been rolled back since he stayed home.

The few others that may have been considered "political" were about either funding for arts education or their own life experiences that influenced their art and the piece they won for.

JK wasn't political? I mean it was funny but still political.

Maybe 2 joke in the over all span of the evening. It wasn't anything near bash you over the head type of political. His job as the host is to poke fun at what is going on right now on whatever side he is on. I actually thought they jokes weren't even that funny and was more annoyed at that then their political nature.

I also wonder if part of the reason the viewership was down is due to so many news outlets covering every aspect of it as it happens and then again the next day? Why waste 4 1/2 hours of your night watching it, when you can read a "Top 20 things you missed at the Oscars" story in 15 minutes the next morning. Don't get me wrong, I'm not this person and enjoyed watching it last night. However, my mother texted me saying she was boycotting it since she didn't want to hear politics from celebrities. (not my view, but oh well) Either way, I'm glad these movies are made and stories are told so that we can see what it's like to live in someone else's world, real or not. There was much talent in the room this year at the awards.
